[06:18:01] <janrinok> kolie2, I've had a couple of websites hosted by a company who have suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth. I want to transfer my domains to another host, but the first thing they instruct me to do is to contact my current host to initiate the transfer.
[06:18:55] <janrinok> I obviously cannot do this. It occurs that it might be something you have seen previously. Do you know how to get around the problem, or what procedure I should follow to effect the transfer?
[08:25:51] <fab23> janrinok: are the domains itself also registered through the same company?
[08:37:00] <janrinok> Yes, both domains are registered by the company that appears to no longer exist - or at least not on the internet.
[08:46:23] <fab23> janrinok: I guess depending on the TLD (e.g. .fr) you may be able to contact the Domain Registry, as the Domain Registrar itself has disappeared.
[08:51:21] <fab23> janrinok: some Web-Hosters are using a third party for domain registration, this will be visible in whois, e.g. 'whois soylentnews.org' were the "official" Registrar ist eNom, LLC (http://www.enom.com)
[14:11:59] <kolie2> yea if the 3rd party is a ghost the only person who can help you is the 3rd party domain registrar or the tld itself.
[14:15:24] <kolie2> definitely run the domains on a whois check - see which registrar is listed and then I would provide them with as much documentation and explain the situation that the domains where registered via that company, they are gone, heres receipts for everything I've been paying for, and just let them know you want to take it over and go from there.
[15:20:28] <janrinok> Thanks for your advice, I will start along that path. I suspect that I am not the only one with this problem.
