[04:23:48] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[04:33:50] <Bytram> paulej72: I was TXTing with NCommander earlier today. I again ran into the problem where it appeared I was both logged in and not logged in at the same time. He suggested it might bw a cache issue and asked me to ask you to restart some daemon that would cause the cache to get flushed.
[04:34:14] <Bytram> paulej72: sorry I don't have the exact cmd; I'm tethered and cannot access his txt message while I'm online.
[04:49:45] <paulej72> NCommander: I am having trouble gitting kinit -k -t $HOME/slash.keytab slash to work on the prodcution servers
[05:06:46] <NCommander> paulej72, I'm investigating
[05:07:49] <paulej72> NCommander: stopped sometime after Jun 7 04:56
[05:08:20] <NCommander> paulej72, hrm
[05:08:52] <paulej72> Bytram: I just did a manual restart of web-frontends
[05:09:28] <NCommander> paulej72, I'm going to just replace the keytba
[05:09:57] <NCommander> kadmin: Missing parameters in krb5.conf required for kadmin client while initializing kadmin interface
[05:10:00] <NCommander> .... ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH
[05:11:00] <paulej72> NCommander: I didn’t do it, it was xlefay :P
[05:11:07] <Bytram> paulej72: thank you!!!
[05:11:19] <paulej72> Bytram: did it help your issue?
[05:11:34] <NCommander> paulej72, fixed
[05:11:56] <paulej72> NCommander: did you generate a new keytab?
[05:12:08] <NCommander> paulej72, I just generated new keys and put them in the keytab
[05:12:09] <Bytram> I dunno. It occurred while I was using the browser on my phone. But, I tether my phone so I can get on-line and get to, e.g., rss =)
[05:12:23] <NCommander> paulej72, reload script just ran successfully so it must be working
[05:12:52] <paulej72> NCommander: so boron has the new keytab and I can copy that to the db servers
[05:14:21] <Bytram> paulej72: I'll keep my eyes open and let you know if it comes back. Given the symptoms I was expereincing, NCommander's suggestion it was a cache issue just "made sense" to me... seemed to fit in with the idea that something new I was logged in, and something else did not. I expect that will do the trick. Thank You!
[05:14:38] <Bytram> s/ new / knew /
[05:15:29] <NCommander> paulej72, why do you need to copy it?
[05:16:57] <paulej72> NCommander: I have script running on lithium and nitrogen, and neon to backup the db and copy it to oxygen from the slash account
[05:18:09] <NCommander> paulej72, oh
[05:18:17] <NCommander> slash can access oxygen?
[05:18:20] <NCommander> */news to me*
[05:18:27] <NCommander> Oh, I think its in global services
[05:18:42] <paulej72> yes so we can do things like this
[05:19:03] <NCommander> paulej72, neat :-)
[05:19:09] <NCommander> kerberos is awesome when it works
[05:19:10] <NCommander> >.>;
[05:21:58] <paulej72> NCommander: the keytab file is not working on neon
[05:22:51] <NCommander> paulej72, .... I want to hit something
[05:23:08] <paulej72> NCommander: working on lithium
[05:24:03] <NCommander> paulej72, slash@neon:~$ kinit -k -t slash.keytab slash
[05:24:03] <NCommander> slash@neon:~$
[05:24:03] <paulej72> NCommander: not working on nitrogen
[05:24:46] <NCommander> paulej72, make sure you clear the KRB5CCNAME environmental variable if you're logging in via kerberos
[05:24:53] * NCommander has been bit by that
[05:25:07] <NCommander> paulej72, try running unset KRB5CCNAME, then kinit
[05:27:53] <paulej72> NCommander: that works, thanks
[05:28:33] <NCommander> paulej72, I should note that somewhere, we should be putting it in shell scripts
[05:39:52] <paulej72> NCommander: I have added that to the reload-all-webfrontends script and to my mysql_backup.sh script
[05:40:37] <NCommander> paulej72, handy
[05:40:44] <paulej72> yes

[17:44:41] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[18:34:33] <Bytram|away> paulej72: Forgot to tell you that the cache flush fix seemed to straighten things out for me yesterday. yay!
[18:34:53] <Bytram|away> paulej72: otoh, I'm seeing the same behavior now on dev.soylentnews.com :(
[18:36:09] <Bytram|away> homepage says I'm logged in. refreshed page; still logged in. clicked on Meta Unicode test story and that page thinks I am NOT logged in. gonna try logging out and back in.
[18:38:23] <Bytram|away> paulej72: Ahhh, I think I got it! The first two stories on dev are on *meta*, i.e.: meta.dev.soylentnews.org
[18:38:42] <Bytram|away> so, over there, it does not seem to know that I am logged in on the non-meta site.
[18:45:26] <Bytram|away> tried to post a reply as an AC and got the lameness filter about too many CAPS SOUNDING LIKE YELLING. But I didn't have anything but english text and one url.
[18:46:15] <Bytram|away> paulej72: From what i can see, the UTF-8 characters all displayed fine, except for the Japanese sample (could be my choice of browser character set.)
[18:46:33] <Bytram|away> there is some great sample UTF-8 data available over here: https://github.com
[18:46:40] <Bytram|away> good luck!!!!!
[19:14:24] <paulej72> Bytram|away: on dev you need to log out and back in to set your coookie properly
[19:14:41] <Bytram|away> I thought I tried that, but will give it another try. brb
[19:16:19] <Bytram|away> okay; I logged out. closed that browser tab (I'm using FF24.6.0). Opened a new tab. Launched dev.soylentnews.org and I am now logged in as martyb (at least according to the home page)
[19:17:27] <Bytram|away> clicked on the "1" which is part of the text which says: "1 comment" and was brought to: http://meta.dev.soylentnews.org
[19:17:51] <Bytram|away> on THAT page, I see a slashbox on the right-hand-side for me to use to "Log In".
[19:19:31] <paulej72> Bytram|away: try it now. I restarted slash and apache ancd cleared the caches.
[19:19:34] <Bytram|away> tried clicking on "Dev.SN" in the "Sections" slashbox on the lefthand side and got a varnish error.
[19:19:42] <Bytram|away> ah; that explains THAT!
[19:19:51] <Bytram|away> let me try again from the beginning.
[19:19:57] <paulej72> Also I deleted the all caps lameness filter
[19:20:12] <Bytram|away> THANK YOU!!!! <grin>
[19:21:02] <Bytram|away> looks like the same behavior, but I noticed something.
[19:21:21] <Bytram|away> On dev, I used the "Night Mode" theme.
[19:21:35] <Bytram|away> after I logged in, everything displayed according to that theme.
[19:21:53] <Bytram|away> when I tried to go to: http://meta.dev.soylentnews.org
[19:22:18] <Bytram|away> I not only see the "Log IN" slash box on the right, the Night Mode theme is no longer in effect.
[19:23:22] <paulej72> Bytram|away: I use night mode and it does not happen for me. I think you login cookie is messed up
[19:23:41] <Bytram|away> Yeah, I was wondering that. I'm going to try deleting it. brb
[19:24:56] <Bytram|away> I'm assuming there should be no interaction with leaving my soylentnews.org cookie around, right?
[19:25:41] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[19:25:58] <Bytram> okay, cookie is gone and I've launched dev.soylentnews.org in a new tab
[19:26:03] <Bytram> I see the default theme
[19:26:38] <Bytram> entered martyb & password in the right-hand-side "Log In" slashbox.
[19:27:14] <Bytram> I'm now back at the home page; night mode IS in effect; and there is a slashbox on the right listing my userid and giving me the option to logout.
[19:27:21] <Bytram> so, at this point, it looks "normal"
[19:28:09] <Bytram> clicking on the "Unicode Test" part of the text in the title: "Meta: Unicode test"
[19:28:13] <Bytram> link should take me to: http://meta.dev.soylentnews.org
[19:28:29] <Bytram> and it does not know it's me anymore.
[19:28:41] <Bytram> log in box is back, and I've got the default theme.
[19:29:50] <Bytram> clicked on the "Soylent News" Icon in the upper-left corner, and I
[19:30:13] <paulej72> Bytram: OK I am seeing it now. Need to see what Ncommander did to fix this, as I broke it when I reverted the db
[19:30:16] <Bytram> 'am back on the home page, and the night mode theme is in effect and my nick is in the slashbox in the upper right=hand-corner
[19:30:36] <Bytram> paulej72: I'm so glad you could reproduce it!
[19:31:15] <Bytram> was starting to wonder what ELSE could be wrong and was coming up short on ideas.
[19:32:26] <NCommander> paulej72, I set the cookie_domain variable to .dev.soylentnews.org, and in the skins table, did the both there
[19:32:40] * NCommander is kinda out of it today, dont expect much
[19:33:03] <paulej72> NCommander: i thought it was just dev.soylentnews.org not .dev.soylentnews.org
[19:33:25] <Bytram> NCommander: Hey there! Sorry to hear you're out of it. It's okay to have a down day once in a while; it's good for my mental health to just get away from everything for a bit.
[19:34:10] <NCommander> paulej72, you need the first dot to act as a wildcard
[19:34:51] <NCommander> paulej72, https://en.wikipedia.org
[19:35:21] <Bytram> fwiw, canonically, we should use "soylentnews.com." notice the trailing "dot"
[19:35:51] * Bytram can't remember what RFC I saw that in, but was quite a surprise when I learned of it.
[19:35:55] <paulej72> Bytram: log out and back in. It will be fixed
[19:36:06] <Bytram> paulej72: on my way! thanks!!!!!!
[19:36:19] <paulej72> Bytram: that trailing . is the root
[19:36:29] <NCommander> Bytram, that's for DNS. cookies use a starting dot
[19:36:36] <Bytram> hmm? Oh yeah, that's right!! thanks!
[19:37:06] <Bytram> did not delete cookie, but just logged back into dev.soylentnews.org
[19:37:12] <Bytram> see night mode theme; good.
[19:37:26] <Bytram> clicked on "Read more" under first story
[19:37:37] <Bytram> and it still knows it's me!
[19:38:13] <paulej72> NCommander: I deleted all caps and not enough spaces lameass filters on dev.
[19:38:21] <Bytram> clicked on icon in uppper-left-hand corner to return to home page; clicked on the "3" of "3 comments" on the first story; and it still knows it's me.
[19:38:25] <Bytram> looking good!
[19:39:25] <Bytram> now trying the story "Funky unicode testing of the index feeds" at http://dev.soylentnews.org by clickedon the story title. and that worked to.
[19:39:32] <Bytram> (that was a non-meta domain)
[19:39:36] <paulej72> Bytram: I was rebuilding the nexus tables from what I had in my scrollback in my terminal. I missed the leading . on the cookiedomain field
[19:39:48] <Bytram> ouch.
[19:39:57] <Bytram> LOL
[19:40:12] <Bytram> I've done something like that too many times to count!
[19:40:23] <Bytram> glad it was a (relativelty) simple fix!
[19:41:40] <Bytram> okay; got some errands to run... see ya all later!
[19:41:43] <paulej72> One problem with html entities in the title fields is that it quickly fills up the max chars of thoes fields
[19:41:44] -!- n1 has quit []
[19:42:50] <Bytram> paulej72: hmmm, that's a challenge. one could copy-pasta UTF-8 chars, but that's kinda ugly.
[19:43:36] <Bytram> maybe a limit of, say, 100 chars of *rendered* text?
[19:44:00] <paulej72> Bytram: the utf8 is now getting turned into entities as a stop-gap fix. It works fine in bodys , but not so much in titles.
[19:44:35] <paulej72> Bytram: the changeing to 100 would require a db schema change and a bunch of template changes.
[19:45:01] <Bytram> oh. so if I entered a title as, ummm, native UTF-8 text, you convert each UTF-8 char to &#nnnn; or whatever?
[19:50:35] <Bytram> And... I just, successfully, submitted a comment to a meta story! http://meta.dev.soylentnews.org
[19:50:44] <Bytram> ok, gtg. see ya all later!!
[19:51:29] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[19:52:51] -!- Bytram|away has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[20:03:52] <Woods> What should I do if I accidentally deleted a story?
[20:06:40] <Woods> Nevermind.... I just went back in my browser until I was back on the page. I was able to accept the story and put it in the queue. I do not think anything else is messed up, it was submitted by an AC
