[01:01:10] -!- Loggie [Loggie!Loggie@Soylent/BotArmy] has joined #soylent
[11:21:03] * fab23 should search for his FreeBSD 2.x CD also from Walnut Creek
[12:13:55] <AlwaysNever> FreeBSD 2.2.5 I'm playing with on vintage hardware (laptop), it runs on only 8 MB RAM and it is a fairly complete system and with PCMCIA support
[12:15:11] <AlwaysNever> It took me no more than a couple of days to corrupt the user database the system "sintetizes" out of /etc/passwd, I managed to salvage the system with the assistance of Gemini
[12:29:19] <fab23> AlwaysNever: next time use vipw to change things in /etc/passwd and it will do consistency check and properly write the shadow file
[12:34:56] <AlwaysNever> yeah, I did, it was not user error, but an unexpected system crash do to low RAM which caused the corruption of the user database files
[12:35:43] <AlwaysNever> my vintage laptop has 8 MB of RAM
[12:40:26] <AlwaysNever> If you are utterly bored, this is my FreeBSD 2.2.5 exploration by the hand of Gemini: https://share.gemini.google
[12:40:31] <systemd> ^ 0303‎Gemini - direct access to Google AI ( https://gemini.google.com )
[12:40:41] <AlwaysNever> You can search for the part "My vintage FreeBSD 2.2.5 crashed, and now on reboot the login programs prints in the console the message "login: /etc/spwd.db: Innapropriate file type or format" and I cannot login."
[12:55:54] <fab23> oh, it did trash during write, evil.
[12:57:05] <AlwaysNever> Luckly there is a cron jobs which nightly backs up the user database files, so I was able to recover the system
[13:13:38] <fab23> yes FreeBSD does some of this backups
[13:23:36] <AlwaysNever> I'm searching for a physical copy of "Complete FreeBSD, 2nd Edition", 1997, by Greg Lehey; it's unobtainium in eBay and the like - there are 3rd Editions for sale, though. But I got it in PDF form (1725 pages) from Anna's Archive.
[13:26:04] <AlwaysNever> About 800 pages of it are printed man pages of the base system, LOL - that is proper DOCUMENTATION.
[13:27:43] <AlwaysNever> from 3rd Edition onwards Greg Lehey removed the printed man pages from the printed book - but it would be a collector's item to have the 2nd Edition with the printed man pages.
[13:29:12] <fab23> not sure if I may have this.
[13:29:27] <fab23> but if, I would not give it away.
[13:44:22] <AlwaysNever> a treasure book!
