[01:39:38] <halibut> I am sure the people making the old-kernel comments know this, but commenting about how nice it is to have a Linux kernel so old that it is immune to the most recent vulnerabilities is like commenting how a particular item of packaged food is still good because it was packaged before manufacturers started printing expiration dates. It is not past the expiration date because there is no expiration date.
[02:18:35] <AlwaysNever> halibut: true, but the fact remains: no zero days are published for 2.6.32
[02:38:17] <halibut> I did not look particularly hard, but https://nvd.nist.gov can be used to turn a kernel OOPS into the ability to overwrite some kernel memory, and https://nvd.nist.gov may be used to trigger a kernel OOPS. Both have been fixed by 2.6.39, but not by 2.6.32. It seems likely they are vulnerabilities in 2.6.32. Is there a published zero day for either?
[02:38:23] <systemd> ^ 0303NVD - CVE-2010-3849
[02:38:23] <halibut> I do not know, but there was likely a published POC for each at some point, somewhere.
[02:38:23] <systemd> ^ 0303NVD - CVE-2010-3849
[02:55:23] <AlwaysNever> that's nice, but totally patched in RHEL 6 (kernel 2.6.32 with security backports) and its clones,
[02:57:41] <AlwaysNever> RHEL 6 (kernel 2.6.32) and its clones went out of support on November 2020, so you would have to search for exploits post that date for 2.6.32
[02:58:09] <halibut> Ah. I was not aware you were running a modified 2.6.32. That will make it harder to identify vulnerabilities, but given the number of CVE mentions and privilege escalation mentions that I found in v2.6.32 up through v2.6.39, it seems quite likely I could find some more after ... 2020-11, I guess.
[06:36:56] <ted-ious> halibut: The nice thing about exploits that have been around for years is that they have been incoprorated into metasploit for so long that you can use them with the click of a button to hack some lazy sysadmin.
[06:37:03] <ted-ious> Minimal effort is required.
[07:55:16] <chromas> Your kernel is too new if it's from RHEL and not original Redhat
[08:17:42] <Ingar> bah, I think my printer died in a deluge of ink
[08:18:12] <Ingar> getting all the required materials to clean it is probabely going to cost me more then jsut getting a new printer
[08:21:21] <ted-ious> You can't clean it with q-tips and a bottle of rubbing alcohol?
[08:39:42] <Ingar> it is 10 years old, to clean it I need to buy a new set of ink cartridges and a set of cleaning cartridges
[08:39:50] <Ingar> for that price, I'm halfway a new printer
[08:41:43] <Ingar> and I had already reset the built in planned obsolescence counter
[08:42:21] <Ingar> it also takes several days to get the ink off your fingers
[08:42:30] <Ingar> currently I'm black-blue spotted
[08:45:52] <ted-ious> Didn't you have some disposable gloves around the house?
[08:47:04] <Ingar> ope
[08:47:12] <Ingar> *nope
[08:47:53] <ted-ious> I recommend buying some nitrile gloves immediately then no matter what else you do. :)
[08:48:10] <ted-ious> What kind of printer is it?
[08:49:22] <ted-ious> Older printers are supposed to be less evil so it might be worth saving just for that.
[08:50:45] <ted-ious> I have heard that the epson eco-tank printers are less evil about proprietary ink but I haven't confirmed it.
[08:51:42] <chromas> "I just blue myself"
[08:59:24] <Ingar> Epson FX-850
[08:59:39] <Ingar> I only use cheaper knok-off ink
[08:59:57] <Ingar> ted-ious: I'm actually looking at the ecotank printers
[09:00:14] <Ingar> the joke is the inbk is like 15% cheaper but the printer is 3 times the price
[09:00:42] <ted-ious> Maybe it's worth it if you print enough?
[09:00:56] <ted-ious> Or try to get a used one and clean it up?
[09:01:51] <Ingar> I mostly print photos
[09:03:23] <Ingar> Epson EcoTank ET-8500 might work
[09:03:31] <Ingar> too bad the A3 version is even more expensive
[09:03:32] <ted-ious> I guess inkjets make more sense than lasers if your using photo paper right?
[09:06:16] <Ingar> they only make sense if you print a boatload
[13:11:36] <AlwaysNever> ink-based printers are an ideation of the Devil

[13:15:40] <AlwaysNever> Gmail app + Office 365 mailbox not working...
[13:16:17] <AlwaysNever> is Microsoft pushing everyone to use the Outlook app?
[13:17:03] <AlwaysNever> ActiveSync was one of the only good things to come from Microsoft, and now they want to kill it
[13:18:53] <AlwaysNever> it seems Microsoft' own Outlook app for mobile does not use ActiveSync, but some proprietary REST api
[13:24:11] <AlwaysNever> it's getting to the tech news... https://piunikaweb.com

[13:33:19] <AlwaysNever> your cloud-based data nicely packaged through a proprietary door you don't have any say about, they didn't tell that part

[22:50:18] <halibut> That is a great story about the double galactic arch. I had seen the picture recently on the APOD ( https://apod.nasa.gov ), but the story is a lot of fun, too.
