[22:05:42] <AlwaysNever> So it looks like the "notification system" in modern macOS is that any local app which wants to notify the user, it has to send the notification to Apple's cloud servers in the Internet, and then those servers "push" de notification back to the user device (macbook, ipad, iphone, iwatch), and the daemon "apsd" in the device receives the "pushed" notification from Apple's cloud and shows it in the screen according to user's preferences
[22:06:49] <AlwaysNever> such a waste of compute and network resources, but allow for "universal notifications" across the ecosystem of Apple devices
[22:07:35] <ted-ious> dd if=/tmp/linux.iso of=/dev/disk/SystemBoot ;reboot
[22:07:54] <ted-ious> I have no idea how macos works but you get the idea. :)
[22:09:29] <AlwaysNever> I like exploring macOS, it won't be my home though
[22:10:42] <AlwaysNever> it also looks like Apple own the whole subnet 17.0.0.0/8, and the Apple cloud servers involved in this "push notifications" affair can be in any IP in tha huge address range
[22:13:36] <AlwaysNever> Also, the local "apsd" daemon cannot be disabled via launchd - launchd is hardcoded to not disable "apsd", it is required booting in an special "rooted" mode and then modify an .plist file, and then reboot in normal mode for launchd to allow disabling "apsd" - fascinating walled garden with "security" all around
[22:17:06] <AlwaysNever> but... macOS comes with a kernel-based firewall stolen from the BSDs, and I've used it to block outgoing access to the whole 17.0.0.0/8 range, and alas "apsd" cannot proceed further than SYN_SENT in its outgoing connection attempts.
[22:20:19] <AlwaysNever> So I thing I've unbound my MacBook Pro 2015 from Apple's Big Brother scheme.
[22:20:29] <AlwaysNever> *I think
[22:23:08] <AlwaysNever> as long as this machine is able to play Youtube, it will be of use and Internet-capable enough
[22:23:38] <AlwaysNever> I've totally given up on traditional TV
[22:30:08] <AlwaysNever> now Google's algorithm shapes my mind, LOL
[22:31:58] <AlwaysNever> This times would be a bad time to be young and trying to escape the massive social engineering going on - thankfully, I'm old enough to hate them all with equal intensity

[23:19:31] <kolie> Actually, that's only true for Push notifications (APNS). Local apps scheduling local notifications (like a calendar event or a finished task) are handled by the OS locally without hitting the network. But yeah, the APNS architecture maintains a persistent connection to the 17.0.0.0/8 block to keep the socket open for remote stuff.
[23:19:54] <kolie> Bold move blocking the whole /8. Just a heads up: watch out for app launches hanging. macOS loves to phone home to check code signing certificates (OCSP) and notarization before launching apps. If it can't reach Apple, it sometimes hangs until it times out. If your apps start launching slowly, that’s probably why.
[23:20:21] <kolie> @ted-ious usually the only way to truly fix the Apple notification daemon is exactly that command. sudo rm -rf / works wonders for silencing alarms, too.
[23:26:04] <AlwaysNever> kolie: I'll keep an eye open for unwanted consequences of blocking the whole 17.0.0.0/8 network. So far, I've "undocked" all the macOS built-in apps, and in my macOS dock I only have: Google Chrome, Firefox 73 (for TLS 1.0), Terminal, Notes, and Sublime Editor.
[23:26:32] <AlwaysNever> I've found the Notes app to be very handy, by the way!
[23:27:44] <AlwaysNever> I basically use (any) operating system as a web browser launcher and as a window manager
[23:29:25] <AlwaysNever> any recommedation for a nice, light, MP3 player for macOS (free, or course)?
[23:29:51] <AlwaysNever> for torrented videos like MKV I'll install VLC
