[08:12:42] <Ingar> The Two Towers
[08:14:17] <chromas> and the One Adjacent
[08:14:58] <halibut_> The story about selling location data above has something that would seem humorous in other contexts: Verizon is claiming the FCC cannot fine it, because that violates its right to a trial by jury.
[08:15:11] <chromas> by George Jr(r) Bush
[08:15:26] <halibut_> Verizon, a corporation, has a right to a trial by jury? Do you think, if I found a copy of their customer agreement, that it would contain a clause forcing the customer to give up that right?
[08:16:08] <chromas> Yeah well they didn't sign or agree to the customer agreement now did they? ;)
[08:16:24] <Ingar> chromas: aah I forgot about Lucky Number 7
[08:18:12] <Ingar> although just Se7en might be more approriate
[08:18:24] <chromas> Sesevenen
[08:18:28] <halibut_> I might need to dig up a copy, but I think I remember that force arbitration agreements are bi-directional. Both sides give it up. The FCC is levying a fine for selling customer information, so the customers are involved ... but you are right. I do not think that is binding here.
[08:19:03] <halibut_> Still, it is amusing that they want that right when they are the ones who might be getting the short end of the stick.
[08:19:20] halibut_ is now known as halibut
[08:19:28] <chromas> From the waaaaah dept.
[08:20:01] <halibut> Agreed.
[08:20:42] <chromas> Maybe none of the agreement is binding and they're just relying on the Shock & Awe attack of the legalese
[08:22:09] <halibut> If I am understanding the argument correctly, at least one court did not buy it.
[08:22:55] <chromas> Sad Are Our Verizien
[08:24:28] <halibut> Maybe they asked the court, Can you hear us now? And sayeth the court: No.
[08:28:18] <chromas> It's an older reference, sir, but it checks out
[08:29:06] <halibut> That's the second time I have seen that reference recently. Is that the rebels requesting access to approach the Endor base in Return of the Jedi?
[08:29:22] <chromas> Many of our current viewers may not be old enough to remember TV ads...or TV
[08:29:25] <halibut> (or, rather, the response of the Empire soldiers granting them clearance)
[08:29:49] <chromas> yeah, "older code"

[08:34:54] <chromas> Accidentally
[08:34:56] <halibut> Oughta teach me to have the trigger be a trip wire strung across the room, I suppose.
[08:35:16] <halibut> but if its not easy to trigger, how is it supposed to catch an intruder?

[08:48:45] <Ingar> halibut: isn't that what superior officers do ?
[08:48:53] <halibut> That guy kept his cool much better than I would have.
[08:49:21] <halibut> I guess I kind of pictured superior officers off being important somewhere, and the lower levels came to report to them.
[08:50:02] <Ingar> well, they all know what happened do Captain Needa and Admiral Piett
[08:50:03] <halibut> ... and, in the end, they told the shuttle to keep to its course, which looked like a collision course with either the command ship or the death star. They then immediately change course to head to the moon like they said they would.
[08:50:17] <Ingar> so, getting a propmotion isn't the safest carreer path

[08:58:01] <chromas> well that first one had two links
[08:59:53] <chromas> The factories weren't going to make jobs for Americans because it would just be all automated anyhow, but now that ICE is on the case, suddenly there would have been jobs
[09:01:04] <c0lo> Somebody still need to grease those robots. And this create jobs in the "robot greaser" higher education.
[09:02:49] <chromas> Executive Lube Engineer
[09:03:51] <c0lo> W/ a major in South Korean lubes.
[09:04:20] <Ingar> weren't the employment statistics revised down with 900,000 ?
[09:05:19] <halibut> Ginormous factories seem likely to at least require some human supervision, but even if they do not, the factories at least provide manufacturing capabilities within the country, do they not? That seems like something worth investing in ...
[09:05:41] <halibut> ... it at least aligns with what I think the administration has most recently said they were trying to do.
[09:06:08] <c0lo> > the factories at least provide manufacturing capabilities within the country, do they not?
[09:06:08] <c0lo> Not any more
[09:06:23] <halibut> I have a hard enough time figuring out what the most recent thing said was at this point, let alone figure out what the executive branch is really intending.
[09:07:01] <halibut> True, not any more. I intended that to be more of a conditional case (would have provided ...)
[09:07:29] <chromas> Yeah but so is deporting
[09:07:55] <chromas> Trump vs. Trump — Number of players: zehro
[09:08:04] <chromas> or when you play yourself, et cetera
[09:08:52] <c0lo> > what the executive branch is really intending.
[09:08:53] <c0lo> They lost any capacity for intention. It's evolution in its most natural form. Takes a while 'til extinction, even longer to evolve rationality.
[09:14:21] <halibut> I think there are an array of intentions there. Trump, at least, seems to be easily swayed by perceived loyalty and monetary benefits, and says whatever seems to make the people near him happy with him, and then does what he wants to make himself happy.
[09:14:45] <halibut> I do not think there is any long-term plan there, but I think there are somewhat clear intentions underneath the things that get said.
[09:14:54] <chromas> E'erybody's happy!
[09:15:30] <halibut> I think there are other people/entities (reptilian overlords, surely) who have longer term plans and are steering Trump in that direction using tactics similar to what you would use with a toddler.
[09:16:14] <chromas> Works for us; may as well work for the prez
[09:18:03] <halibut> It's a little scary how easily my thoughts and opinions can be swayed by reading something I mostly agree with. I like to think I am better at counteracting that than most, but I may just be falling for that old fallacy where everybody thinks they are above average.
[09:21:54] <c0lo> Easy-peasy halibut. Just make fun of yourself as often as you can.

[09:44:04] <janrinok> It is all going swimmingly well for Trump. I am sure that he will be overjoyed with his news from the Arkansas farmers, the steel workers, the increase in unemployment, etc. He will also demand the flying of flags at half-mast in memory of Kirk, but not on the death of more schoolchildren.

[09:50:37] <janrinok> I wonder why the fuze on the Hellfire missile doesn't appear to have worked either. I do not see any explosion.
[09:53:02] <c0lo> A non-metallic UFO, hit tangentially
[09:54:01] <janrinok> Nope, whatever is powering it is going to contain metal of some kind.
[09:55:23] <janrinok> If that is 'stealth' then somebody has solved the ultimate problem. The laser guidance could see it, but the fuzing either failed or couldn't see it at all.
[09:55:26] <c0lo> Ceramics do contain metals. As oxides, though.
[09:56:36] <janrinok> No visible wings, but able to steer itself, despite being 'orb' shaped.
[09:57:21] <chromas> it was a stealth explosion
[09:57:55] <janrinok> lol - it whispered 'bang'
[09:59:19] <c0lo> I don't get the angle of camera, 'tho. Is it from above?
[10:00:16] <c0lo> Besides, Hellfire is an air-to-ground. And that was an u-Flying-o
[10:02:04] <janrinok> It is, but one doesn't normally fire weapons that you know will be ineffective. And it had no problem hitting it - the kinetic energy alone should have had a significant effect.
[10:03:35] <c0lo> > but one doesn't normally fire weapons that you know will be ineffective.
[10:03:35] <c0lo> If nails is all have, you may use whatever hammer around. Or something like that. Or the reverse.
[10:06:51] <janrinok> c0lo, regarding the angle. There are 2 Reaper drones, both higher than the target. Possibly much higher but that is just a guess. The one that fired the missile is not in view. The other is the one with the camera.
[10:07:05] <Ingar> the secrite thrill you get from pushing the red "fire" button you're not allowed to touch otherwise
[10:07:20] <Ingar> you know the little red button you're not supposed to touch
[10:07:34] <janrinok> or 'oops', I shouldn't have done that.....
[10:07:49] <chromas> You have to press Lockout Changes first
[10:07:52] <Ingar> janrinok: that was a subtle man in black reference ;)
[10:08:06] <c0lo> If as-seen-from-above, orb-oidal shape has no bearing for the flight.
[10:08:12] <janrinok> fair cop, Guv
[10:09:23] <janrinok> well it has to have some way of staying airborne and guiding itself. I wonder what speed it was actually moving at?
[10:09:40] <chromas> 15mph
[10:10:21] <Ingar> ball lightning ? (I haven't seen the vid)
[10:10:26] <chromas> Was it an it? Or a them? Maybe a cluster of quad copters and the missile just bumped through them, spreading them apart a little
[10:10:37] <janrinok> no, not ball lightening.
[10:11:24] <janrinok> the laser fuzing should have triggered in that case, I would have thought.
