[04:00:55] <halibut> I saw some comments earlier about cycling upwind both directions, and wanted to add my thoughts.
[04:01:33] <halibut> A pure headwind one direction increases work, but becomes a pure tailwind going the other way, and should decrease work.
[04:01:39] <halibut> However, a crosswind is another story.
[04:01:57] <halibut> Drag is complicated, and I believe the best models have a linear and quadratic component.
[04:03:06] <halibut> In a boat, to counter a crosswind, you need to sail into it, just to cancel the linear component. On a bike, the effect is much less, but I think it is still there a little. So, even with just the linear component, a crosswind means you need
[04:03:22] <halibut> to turn into the wind a little both going and coming, creating the effect of having a slight headwind each way.
[04:04:53] <chromas> quadralinear
[04:05:13] <halibut> The quadratic component is stronger. Even without needing to turn into the wind a little, the quadratic component actually increases your drag both ways.
[04:06:33] <halibut> So, if the wind is a little crosswise, they you might genuinely have increased drag both coming and going.

[13:54:47] <fab23> so login will be mandatory?
[13:59:11] <c0lo> We're past that, the login is already mandatory. With MotherF...errr... actorAuthentication. This time they need your papers to let you pass.
[14:00:03] <fab23> oh, not at this end of the world
[14:01:39] <fab23> I even use private window in Firefox, with an empty start page :)
[14:06:53] <fab23> but in the end it will help to waste less time on YT, maybe other platforms will rise

[14:29:18] <systemd> ^ 03The era of internet age verification is here – so what now?
[14:29:18] <systemd> ^ 03After the UK, online age verification is landing in the EU
[14:50:27] <fab23> EU != Europe
[15:57:10] <Ingar> UK isn't europe
[15:58:00] <Ingar> so, we're back to organizing orgies
[15:58:06] <Ingar> come put your usb stick in mah slots
[15:59:30] <fab23> Ingar: UK is not part of EU (at the moment), but still in Europe :)
[16:03:04] <Ingar> only technically
[16:09:02] -!- Runaway1956 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[16:09:21] <c0lo> If UK/EU/Australia force age verifications, it will be the same for the whole world, too expensive for the sites to maintain different solutions for different countries.

[16:09:27] <systemd> ^ 03Australia is quietly introducing 'unprecedented' age checks for search engines like Google - ABC News
[16:10:31] <ted-ious> This sounds like a business opportunity for other countries to provide services to europeans who don't want to deal with these regulations.
[16:10:53] <Ingar> yeah your iranian VPN won;t attract any attention at all
[16:11:14] <Ingar> or you could route through China
[16:11:54] <ted-ious> Do europeans need a vpn to connect to soylentnews?
[16:12:59] * fab23 does not
[16:21:39] <c0lo> Rrrright, ted-ious, every country could create their own Google and PornHub, 't'sa trifle, no sweat.  And payment processors too

[16:54:35] <fab23> We should go back into sending the money in a letter to pay
[17:05:20] <janrinok> ted-ious, no, accessing SN is normal.
[17:07:46] <janrinok> I have problems accessing some sites in France (which is where I live) but many of them are just warnings and not actual blocks. Other than that I have nothing that appears to be blocked permanently until I prove my age.
[17:39:20] <fab23> janrinok: probably you are suspicous because your browsers prefered language is set to English :)
