[00:42:35] -!- kyonko [kyonko!SOY@2001:5b0:50d5:oxkp:lgxk:owlw:ujip:nsij] has joined #soylent
[07:00:26] <chromas> " FREE delivery Wednesday, June 18 on orders shipped by Amazon over $35. Order within 6 secs "
[07:08:46] <kyonko> da fuq
[07:23:17] <Ingar> my stuff is on backorder
[07:41:27] <janrinok> I suppose it depends on what you order
[07:42:18] <kyonko> in 6 seconds
[07:49:34] <chromas> I think it was just before midnight when the page loaded
[07:53:39] <janrinok> midnight in which timezone? Can you not use a VPN to log in from another tz?
[07:55:29] <chromas> Probably any timezone. Once it's a new day, then taking the same amount of time to ship it will make it arrive a day later than before :)
[07:55:33] <janrinok> I don't know because I have Prime - even in the remote parts of France I can usually get next day delivery if something is in stock, sent from anywhere in western Europe. China can still be a long delay.
[07:56:13] <janrinok> Yes but you get the order in before the deadline expires
[07:56:29] <chromas> I tried prime once for one-day shipping. Took at least a week before the one-day shipping actually started though
[07:56:51] <janrinok> I am assuming that there was some benefit in placing the order inside that 6 seconds - even if the task is in fact impossible.
[07:57:25] <chromas> They probably shuffle it over to the nearest DC so that travel time doesn't count
[07:57:49] <chromas> The benefit is the date of arrival
[07:58:08] <chromas> so now instead of June 18 it'll be June 19
[07:58:16] <chromas> or 19 June in metric
[07:58:24] <janrinok> lol
[07:59:43] <chromas> Got a motherboard that won't POST now. I'm beginning to suspect using an angle grinder nearby was a bad idea
[08:00:41] <chromas> on the other hand, I had another mb do that before and I wasn't using an angle grinder, so it can't be the cause this time either
[08:00:52] <chromas> scientifically confirmed
[08:10:25] <kyonko> motherboards still exist?
[08:14:41] <Ingar> it's friday the the 13th
[08:14:49] <Ingar> you shouldn't be grinding mainboards today
[08:15:09] <kyonko> lol
[08:15:15] <Ingar> motherboards still exist? -> I picked up two PCI fireware interface cards from the trash bin at work
[08:15:35] <kyonko> what country are you in?
[08:15:43] <Ingar> Belgium
[08:15:59] <kyonko> what a rich country that you find such things in the trash
[08:16:43] <Ingar> I lot of them older funky scanners used firewire
[08:16:46] <Ingar> *a lot
[08:17:03] <Ingar> old microfilm scanners, stuff like that
[08:17:46] <kyonko> had to be firewire
[08:24:50] <Ingar> and my inheritance includes a firefire videocam
[08:25:06] <Ingar> noticed there are tapes
[08:25:25] <Ingar> s/firefire/firewire/ :)
[08:33:23] <kyonko> heh firefire
[08:42:09] <Ingar> that's the 12VHPWR connector

[09:21:53] <ted-ious> On the one hand, H-2A workers are, on average, younger and more productive than the unauthorized workers who were in their 20s when they arrived in the United States in the 1990s and early 2000s. These workers are now in their 40s and 50s and less productive in repetitive hand-harvest jobs, such as picking apples or berries, than younger H-2A workers.
[09:22:08] <ted-ious> However, H-2A workers are more expensive than U.S. workers because they must be paid an Adverse Effect Wage Rate (AEWR) of $19.97 an hour in Califor nia in 2025, when the state’s minimum wage is $16.50. Employers must also provide H-2Aworkers with free houing and transportation to and from workplaces.
[09:22:19] <ted-ious> The total cost of H-2A workers is often $30 or more an hour in California versus $20 or more for U.S. farmworkers with payroll taxes.

[09:22:53] <ted-ious> Hope that helps explain some things.
[09:24:20] <c0lo> https://apnews.com
[09:24:20] <systemd> ^ 03Just a moment...
[09:26:58] <Ingar> news flash: employees are more expensive if you can't exploit them
[09:55:11] <c0lo> There ain't such a thing as an employee one cannot exploit more or less.
[13:32:22] <Ingar> well , lesser exploitable employees are usually more expensive than the more exploitable ones
[14:37:03] <kolie> Just because there are labor laws and minimum rates, they are often aren't adhered too.
[14:37:24] <kolie> OT laws and Oncall laws are skirted often as well.
[14:38:08] <kolie> theres cases of people being oncall and getting paid two hours at minimum wage and not their standard rate, but the oncall is "1 hr anywhere in the county" over 4-5 days periods.
[14:38:33] <kolie> I'll tell you what you can do with that requirement, be stuck at home, not drink, not have kids etc.
[14:39:39] <kolie> with those kind of restrictions workers are essentially, still working, yet these companies offering stuff like 2 hour pay and per call add ons - when its clear with the expectations and restrictions its more of a hourly rate they exploit.
[14:40:23] <kolie> And these people are educated citizens who've been in the system a long time - and we expect that they are paying h-2a workers AEWR lol
[14:42:32] <kolie> And the free housing and transportation turns into a forced labor camp you can't leave cause you have no options, real good move there.
[17:05:55] <Ingar> there have been a few cases in the news here were it actually was a forced labor camp
[17:39:35] <janrinok> Ingar - are you interested in https://soylentnews.org - the huge dump of satellite imagery?
[17:39:36] <systemd> ^ 031.5Tb of James Webb Space Telescope Data Dumped On The Internet - New Searchable Database - SoylentNews
[17:44:37] <Ingar> janrinok: only mildly tbh
[17:45:08] <janrinok> You prefer your own images - I understand
[17:46:07] <Ingar> well I like nice pictures from James Webb as much as anyone
[17:47:12] <Ingar> but I think it's only actually usefull if you're into research
[17:48:16] <Ingar> janrinok: and I still have three data sets in my backlog ;-)
[17:53:00] <janrinok> lol - I hope the weekend weather is good, although it looks like it will be predominantly cloudy with occasional thunderstorms here...
[17:54:40] <Ingar> it looks I'm on the edge
[17:54:56] <Ingar> weather service can't seem to decide between thunderstorms and bloody hot
[17:57:58] <janrinok> well, it either gives you a chance to increase the backlog or reduce it, depending on what actually happens :)
[17:59:56] <fab23> https://xkcd.com :)
