[08:30:38] <janrinok> morning world!
[09:48:07] <Ingar> GOOD MORNING SOYLENT!
[10:13:15] <janrinok> good morning Ingar - just finished todays online French lesson...
[10:55:48] <janrinok> https://www.cbc.ca
[10:55:48] <systemd> ^ 03EU hits back against Trump with $23 billion US in tariffs on U.S. goods
[10:58:56] <janrinok> Overall, retaliatory measures imposed by China, Canada and the EU will hit nearly $90 billion of American exports.
[11:04:40] <janrinok> EU has also temporarily suspended the threat to impose tariffs on "GAFAM". Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft
[11:05:45] <chromas> that's dumb
[11:05:54] <chromas> they should call it MAGA-F
[11:06:00] <chromas> or FAGA'M
[11:07:08] <ted-ious> FT'AGAM
[11:07:14] <janrinok> Trump has lifted his tariffs for 90 days, and the EU has followed suit, pending 'satisfactory' discussions said von der Leyen
[11:07:15] <ted-ious> Don't forget about tesla.
[11:08:15] <chromas> Evenin', M'FAGAT
[11:08:52] <janrinok> GAFAM is the French acronym - they always spell things backwards anyway
[11:09:19] <janrinok> It will be interesting to see how Trump spins this.
[11:09:34] <chromas> French acronym and it doesn't have an apostrophes or psilent lettres?
[11:10:11] <janrinok> probably they don't write psilent letters...?
[11:10:41] <chromas> You must be stuck in your french lessons then ;)
[11:11:18] <janrinok> it is only conversation - I can leave them out!
[11:14:17] <chromas> I think the french are already tarrifing us
[11:14:29] <chromas> gandi wants me to pay $30 to renew my .org now
[11:15:02] <janrinok> gandi isn't French...?
[11:15:25] <ted-ious> Are there any european countries that the usa doesn't have a trade deficit with?
[11:15:51] <chromas> don't tell France they're not French
[11:16:13] -!- soylentil51 [soylentil51!~soylentil@82.102.ht.hl] has joined #soylent
[11:17:39] <soylentil51> But why is Trump putting tariffs on sweepings? I understand the one on NY real estate, and even the one on Easter, but why the sweeping tariffs?
[11:18:13] <janrinok> Well, I didn't know that. Thanks. French newsreader just cracked a joke "We are still waiting for a statement from the penguins in the Antarctic"
[11:18:45] <ted-ious> I can't tell if jamie dimon really doesn't like tariffs or if he's just doing oligarch propaganda.
[11:18:52] <chromas> They're not known for their humor
[11:19:34] <janrinok> They don't usually crack jokes on the news anyway.
[11:19:47] <ted-ious> But it's obvious that at least a few american oligarchs want the usa to address all these trade deficits around the world so the rest of the world is going to feel the pain of readjustment whether they lie about it ornot.
[11:21:28] <soylentil51> Tariffs are Mercantilist, prior to the Classical Economic theory of "Wealth of Nations(is not tariffs)" by a Smith, not a Miller. Moron Ron Varro seems to be in charge of what policy there is in the off-white house.
[11:21:28] <ted-ious> And since I haven't heard any other leader tell the truth about what's going on I guess there's no reason to pay much attention to it until it's all sorted out.
[11:22:53] <ted-ious> Tariffs just seem to me to be the most logical and related way to adjust trade deficits.
[11:23:15] <ted-ious> And I guess also to see which of your enemies lies the most.
[11:23:42] <soylentil51> Only if you can't compete on efficiency or quality!
[11:24:05] <chromas> instead of tariff let's just call it a vat
[11:24:15] <ted-ious> Only when the other guy doesn't cheat with his own tariffs and other restrictions.
[11:25:07] <ted-ious> At the end of the day if there's a permanent growing trade deficit somebody is lying and skimming money off the economy.
[11:26:21] <ted-ious> Maybe the europeans will realize that their leaders are just as corrupt as ours and we can all put the lot of them in prison.
[11:28:01] <soylentil51> America has no leader, only a Grandpa whose driving privileges and tariff authority need to be taken away from him.

[16:14:25] <Ingar> but because of our political systems, the chances are low that a single criminal grabs all the power
[16:29:27] <Ingar> oh wow, EU is going aftger ingame currencies
[16:29:31] <Ingar> *after
[17:00:24] <janrinok> kolie2, the story summaries have not been going out since that problem last week. The statistics and subscription emails are both operating as normal, but the story email is missing. Any ideas what the problem might be?
[17:02:54] <kolie2> probably something to do with lists, whats the from address on those?
[17:05:46] <janrinok> 'noreply@soylentnews.org' looks pretty standard to me, it is the same as the other 2.
[17:10:14] <kolie2> whats the subject of them?
[17:12:10] <janrinok> [SoylentNews] Stories for 2025-04-03
[17:36:13] <kolie2> something to do with ip tables I think.
[17:37:27] <janrinok> OK, anything I can do to help?
[17:37:55] <kolie2> dont think so looking at it now.

[17:47:52] <kolie2> What time does it normally go out?
[17:48:58] <janrinok> 0100 UTC or thereabouts
[17:49:23] <janrinok> so about 7 hours from now
[17:49:29] <kolie2> 8 yea
[17:52:57] <kolie2> I think all emails from @soylentnews to @externaldomain havent been working
[17:53:13] <kolie2> delivery to soylentnews addresses not related.
[17:53:34] <kolie2> looks good currently.
[17:53:45] <kolie2> I was able to sit on the rehash box and send out an email.
[17:54:20] <kolie2> Verified it wasn't working prior, created a test case, changed the mailu config, used same command, saw it now send.
[17:54:34] <kolie2> Ran security checks on the new config and everything passed so seems good now.
[17:57:51] <janrinok> Will the changes persist if we crash again?
[18:00:28] <kolie2> It's not related to any crash so it should.
[18:02:53] <janrinok> great. FYI I've been installing a caddy server to replace Nginx - and I am very pleased with it. Written in Go and it does automatic certificate creation and updating - all you have to do is give it 'listen on 443' and it does everything behind the scenes immediately. It was so fast I didn't realise that it had done it :)
[18:02:54] <kolie2> I try not to do things that don't persist but as a whole we havent' had many restart from worlds to really get all the weird stuff out. I'd say it's pretty good considering the level of documentation we have on all the components.
[18:03:48] <kolie2> oh cool where you replacing nginx with it?
[18:04:03] <janrinok> I am still working on the flagging software for admins/eds and looking at putting it into a container. It is slow going though.
[18:04:14] <janrinok> Oh, on my own server here.
[18:04:57] <kolie2> cool yea caddy is in pretty high use at a lot of places, seen it a lot, nice modern project.
[18:05:53] <kolie2> basically what we use traefil for, but caddy is specific to http
[18:07:11] <janrinok> Yeah, I've had to look at all of these things just so that I can work out what our system does. Traefik is not something I have installed yet though, that pleasure is still to come.
[18:07:56] <kolie2> yea just a front end, but it handles not only https, but tcp in the general case
[18:08:11] <kolie2> its a bit more complexity, but has a lot of flexibiltiy as a result.
[18:08:36] <janrinok> I've watched a few youtube vids but not got deep into the configuration of it yet.
[18:09:38] <kolie2> yea we just run it with basically a empty config, and use the docker labels on the docker services themselves, to auto create the cofig.
[18:09:59] <janrinok> I didn't know it did that
[18:10:02] <kolie2> the stock config, i think we just setup the entrypoint/listening ports.
[18:10:14] <kolie2> yea and then for example rehash...
[18:11:00] <kolie2> in the docker compose ( incoming line spam )
[18:11:07] <kolie2> labels:
[18:11:07] <kolie2> - "traefik.enable=true"
[18:11:07] <kolie2> - "traefik.docker.network=traefik_network"
[18:11:07] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.routers.rehash.tls=true"
[18:11:07] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.routers.rehash.rule=Host(`www.${BASE_URL}`) || Host(`${BASE_URL}`) || Host(`paypal.${BASE_URL}`)"
[18:11:08] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.routers.rehash.entrypoints=websecure"
[18:11:10] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.routers.rehash.service=www-rehash-service"
[18:11:12] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.routers.rehash.tls.certresolver=myresolver"
[18:11:14] <kolie2> - "traefik.http.services.www-rehash-service.loadbalancer.server.port=80"
[18:11:24] <kolie2> traefik scans docker continusly for updates
[18:11:30] <janrinok> nice!
[18:11:34] <kolie2> and when it sees those labels, reads them and add them to the running config.
[18:11:51] <kolie2> a router receives requests, we are creating one here names rehash
[18:12:03] <kolie2> routers redirect to a service, we are creating one again
[18:12:17] <kolie2> a service is a pool of docker hosts, we tell it, redirect to them on port 80
[18:12:25] <kolie2> so traefik here is doing ssl termination as well.
[18:12:42] <kolie2> And what requests does the router get? Ones with the host set in .rule
[18:12:52] <kolie2> so all very dynamic.
[18:13:06] <janrinok> I've got all these things to come...!
[18:14:01] <kolie2> I'm going to head out, going to fly down to san diego and back.
[18:14:30] <janrinok> enjoy your flight!
[18:14:49] <kolie2> yea right down the coast, beautiful day should be good. going to a small airfield I haven't been to before.
[18:15:12] <janrinok> I envy you!
[18:15:30] <janrinok> I just get to watch ac nowadays
[18:15:48] <kolie2> watching is better for the wallet let me tell you ><
[18:15:53] <janrinok> lol
[18:16:16] <janrinok> catch you tomorrow
[18:47:57] <Ingar> donno, I watch through telescopes. not plane-expensive, but expensive enough :-p
