[18:21:17] <Ingar> greetings soylentils
[18:23:55] <janrinok> Ingar, and to you. Clear sky last night?
[18:32:35] <Ingar> janrinok: yes, a few hours. It was very cold :D
[18:33:10] <Ingar> managed to get some more data on the pleiades
[18:34:52] <janrinok> It is much colder here today too, but no snow. Lots of strong winds and rain though.
[18:36:44] <Ingar> most of the snow has melted, we're already preparing for the coming summer weekend
[18:37:05] <janrinok> your forecast is that good?
[18:37:07] <Ingar> temps might go up to 18C on sunday ( > 15C in any case)
[18:37:23] <kolie> o/
[18:37:29] <Ingar> \o
[18:37:53] <Ingar> janrinok: stormy weather though :) but still crazy
[18:38:22] <kolie> janrinok, re: the irc journal.
[18:38:23] <janrinok> Yes, I was just looking at the local strong wind warnings for here. Not a night for going outside.
[18:38:33] <kolie> Stronger host masking ?
[18:39:04] <kolie> manage by requiring registered users / voicing+moderating channels. useful? worth it?
[18:39:07] <janrinok> o/ - are you referring to your journal?
[18:39:10] <kolie> oh yea
[18:40:28] <janrinok> I was wondering (because I don't know what is possible) whether those with valid accounts could have a cloak like "something/site-member"
[18:40:33] <kolie> yes.
[18:41:35] <janrinok> That might meet the requirement. I will ask the person concerned privately.
[18:41:49] <kolie> I think I know who it is based on the comment alone
[18:42:04] <janrinok> I think most people do - and I certainly do!
[18:42:29] <kolie> Not that it matters, the host mask is useless to me, and - I guess if we had memebrs operating their own channels, it would make it potentially harder on them
[18:42:50] <kolie> BUT - that being said, requiring channels with registered nicks would be then your option, and then setting the channel voice only etc.
[18:43:01] <kolie> So its not like there isnt a way to moderate without host masks.
[18:47:42] <kolie> yea the option is use a bounce or vps too.
[18:47:44] <janrinok> Yeah, the problem is that we want the #soylent channel to be as open as possible. It is where people come if they are experiencing problems accessing the site
[18:47:55] <kolie> We dont need to set the modes here
[18:48:05] <kolie> Unless there is an attack, and they are modes we'd probably use already.
[18:48:08] <Ingar> if you want to hide your IP:
[18:48:10] <janrinok> They may not already have a nick prearranged.
[18:48:12] <Ingar> don't connect to the internet
[18:48:31] <kolie> You can join the server, no channels, register a nick.
[18:48:35] <kolie> No one sees anything.
[18:48:47] <janrinok> Yeah, Ingar, I get that, but some people have had to put us
[18:49:10] <janrinok> put up with a lot of personal harassment both on and off the site.
[18:50:32] <kolie> I'm looking at the cloaking module in solanum, it doesn't appear to have configurable munging.
[18:51:01] <kolie> Not sure if there are alternate modules or other features that can achieve more anonymous default masks.
[18:51:24] <janrinok> the last time I had configurable munging the doctor gave me tablets :) At least I think that is what they were for
[18:51:44] <janrinok> You know what doctor's handwriting is like ...
[18:51:50] <kolie> lol
[18:52:17] <Ingar> if I do /whois I can see my own IP, but not yours
[18:52:39] <Ingar> but , yeah maybe the cloak could be better
[18:52:42] <janrinok> I am entirely happy with that on IRC
[18:53:40] <kolie> Yea Ithink the issue is, for some people, you see their provider
[18:53:44] <kolie> and the first two octets
[18:53:50] <janrinok> yep
[18:53:52] <kolie> That gets you within the state / vacinity.
[18:54:08] <kolie> Some providers are small enough or granular enough, that it can be city.
[18:54:41] <kolie> Those actually concerned with that, usually are using a vps/vpn or combo of the two, to do all their web activity through already.
[18:54:58] <kolie> We don't block tor.
[18:55:03] <janrinok> Agreed, and I have pointed that out.
[18:55:06] <kolie> So theres quite a few options.
[18:55:41] <kolie> That being said, the host mask was pointed out as a detriment, and it's already useless to me, and we don't have a lot of people managing their own channels already where they have to rely on hostmask, and even there there seems to be reasonable alternatives.
[18:56:12] <kolie> Anyways. #fite is kind of back for those interested. Still working out the mechanics.
[18:56:25] <janrinok> I will take your advice.
[18:56:51] <kolie> I asked in #solanum on libera if they had thoughts on more anonymous default cloaks.
[18:58:27] <Ingar> could we write an extension or so?
[18:58:47] <janrinok> I'm not sure how we would automatically verify that they are site members though...
[18:58:48] <kolie> Yea, take the default cloak module, and gut it.
[18:58:59] <kolie> I mean nickserv serves that purpose.
[18:59:11] <Ingar> kolie: that can't be that hard... might be something for a weekend project
[18:59:13] <kolie> I don't know why we'd necessarily want to verify site membership, although we could.
[18:59:33] <kolie> Yea I could get a working module out in an hour if we wanted.
[18:59:34] <janrinok> Well, if anyone can get it what does it achieve?
[19:00:07] <Ingar> kolie: I do speak C, but I have never seen the solanum codebase :)
[19:00:16] <kolie> It stops random IRC connections from being able to spam a channel without being in a registered account.
[19:00:35] <janrinok> I suppose it would make every account more secure... good guys and bad guys
[19:00:39] <kolie> Ingar, the ip cloaking module ( v4 ) is very straight forward.
[19:01:06] <kolie> What we could do jan, is if people wanted, allow them to login to their website account, and give a hostmask
[19:01:24] <kolie> user@Soylent/User/UID
[19:01:26] <janrinok> That is a good idea
[19:02:08] <kolie> So somehow assign a custom vhost, to a nickserv account, based on web authentication.
[19:02:11] <janrinok> do you have a feel for how many connections use IPv4 versus IPv6? I usually only see hashes
[19:02:30] <kolie> on rehash?
[19:03:12] <janrinok> yep. I am happy working with hashes, I don't think that I can justify seeing the IPs as a matter of routine.
[19:04:43] <Ingar> not that an ipv6 address or a has look that much different :D
[19:04:50] <Ingar> *a hash
[19:04:59] <janrinok> lol
[19:05:37] <kolie> I'm not sure how I'd go about answering that question.
[19:05:51] <kolie> We have the front end
[19:06:01] <kolie> Theres ways there to get more stats.
[19:06:11] <kolie> I know some creative ways in rehash.
[19:06:21] <kolie> Just idle curiosity?
[19:07:05] <janrinok> I would be happy to get the results of any further analysis but I don't necessarily think that I need to know the actual IP addy.
[19:07:33] <janrinok> Not so much idle curiosity but not an important issue at the moment.
[19:08:07] <kolie> https://doc.traefik.io is our front end
[19:08:07] <systemd> ^ 03Traefik Access Logs Documentation - Traefik
[19:08:20] <kolie> There is plugins/middleware/extensions at the highest level to get some info
[19:08:42] <kolie> Rehash itself, I think you could answer that based on either the access logs if apache writes them out, or IPID indirectly.
