[09:41:25] <Ingar> darn my irpg wasn't logged in
[09:54:59] <janrinok> have you lost data?
[09:59:36] <chromas> Do you have to re-login to it after reconnecting or something?
[09:59:56] <Ingar> maybe sometimes, donno
[10:00:05] <Ingar> I noticed my clock wasn't advancing
[10:00:24] <chromas> oh yeah, mine too I s'pose
[10:00:37] <chromas> I saw it yap about me so I assumed it automatically continued
[10:01:05] <Ingar> yeah same
[10:01:38] <chromas> ah there we goes
[10:01:59] <chromas> stupid modem and its one blinking light for unknown reasons
[10:02:33] <Ingar> my uplink has been rather bad the past few weeks
[10:02:39] <Ingar> ISP is working on the cabling
[10:03:09] <Ingar> but, fun fact, due to recent laws, "road works" have to be combined and streets can only be opened up every 5 years
[10:03:27] <Ingar> we jsut got a new street, so I'm already sure I won't be getting fibre for the next few years
[10:03:52] <chromas> underground utils?
[10:04:04] <Ingar> yes, this is europe
[10:04:21] <chromas> Why wouldn't they have a conduit that could have new lines run through it?
[10:04:59] <Ingar> efficiency is bad for the economy
[10:05:12] <Ingar> I mewan, less people needed, less companies making profit
[10:05:45] <chromas> Fiber company's been stringing up lines around here, but they also have a tunnel digger whatevermajigger that drills horizontally to run lines to people's houses and stuff
[10:06:17] <Ingar> there might be additional compolications here as there's also a major gas pipe running here
[10:06:21] <janrinok> In France they have laid the conduit. I have to wait up to 3 years for them to connect the fibre from the end of my drive to my home - a total distance of about 30 metres!
[10:06:22] <Ingar> *complications
[10:06:36] <chromas> What if they just get the job done quickly, but then pay lots of people to be bureaucrats about it afterward?
[10:07:11] <Ingar> it's shifting, we're going from left-wing to right-wing govts
[10:07:20] <Ingar> so less bureaucrats more corporatism
[10:07:31] <chromas> Less chat more hat
[10:08:29] <Ingar> nah
[10:08:43] <Ingar> just the beneficiaries of monies changing
[10:08:49] <chromas> =yt homer simpson less chat more hat
[10:08:50] <systemd> https://youtube.com - Lisa ruins Bart's birthday😔 // #simpsons #shorts (35; 21,201,419 views; 👍1,043,764)
[10:09:02] <chromas> that's not it
[10:09:29] <Ingar> Less chat, more splat
[10:09:52] <Ingar> (I looked up the expression because I didn't know it :-p )
[10:09:53] <chromas> that was a pretty lame clip
[10:11:01] <Ingar> chromas: flemish people traditionally already have that less talk more work attitude
[10:11:31] <Ingar> or rather more like,"Talk is cheap, let's see what happens first"
[10:11:51] <chromas> it was from an old episode where Homer gets to be the town crier, with a bell and "tricorn hat"
[10:12:27] <Ingar> I do have some old simpsons episodes in my video collection I think
[10:12:35] <chromas> I need to stock up
[10:12:37] <Ingar> but, today I need to mess with telescope setups
[10:12:44] <chromas> Before they're all memory holed by Dithney
[10:13:53] <chromas> Not that I'd ever get around to it, but I wonder how well a 3d-printed scope mount with a cheapo stepper motor would work
[10:15:43] <chromas> looks like others already did it, so I don't have to
[10:16:38] <chromas> it's like when I had the idea for an init system that ran everything in parallel and would automatically prioritize dependencies and stuff. Well I did nothing, and then one day systemd appeared. Good job!

[10:19:33] <chromas> this one has a better name though https://www.thingiverse.com
[10:19:33] <systemd> ^ 03poor man's telescope tracker by otherthing
[10:36:55] <Ingar> chromas: people do that indeed
[10:37:05] <Ingar> there are aven 3d printed scopes
[10:37:50] <chromas> How do you home the scope? Point it at a specific star manually?
[10:38:26] <chromas> Or do you have to break out the compass and stuff
[10:38:28] <Ingar> assuming an equatorial setup, the first thing you do is polar align
[10:38:43] <Ingar> but there is polaris for convenience
[10:38:56] <chromas> so you Polarise it
[10:39:02] <Ingar> yes
[10:39:14] <Ingar> Polaris is not exactly at the celestial north pole though
[10:39:34] <Ingar> you need to look up the exact position
[10:39:39] <Ingar> but there's apps
[10:40:01] <chromas> Sounds like work
[10:40:27] <Ingar> in most equatorial mounts there is actually a tiny telescope, with a circle image, so you aim star on circle at the right position
[10:40:29] <chromas> Can I just pipe my scope output into KStars and adjust the scope until the dots align?
[10:40:49] <Ingar> I have yet to see a mount that has motorized polar alignment
[10:40:58] <Ingar> but
[10:41:11] <Ingar> if your scope has a camera there's software aids
[10:41:25] <Ingar> it shows arrows to indicate what direction you need to adjust to
[10:41:59] <Ingar> a "polar alignment routine" takes me about 30 minutes
[10:42:17] <Ingar> when I started out that was like +1hr, but you git gut
[10:43:17] <Ingar> ofc, if you use an alt-az mount (up-down) you jsut plop it down
[10:43:46] <chromas> Time for you to 3d-print some enhancements
[10:44:00] <Ingar> I don't have a 3D printer
[10:44:19] <Ingar> I've considered it a few times, and Id like to be able to print
[10:44:27] <Ingar> but I don't feel like doing a deep dive into 3d printing
[10:44:34] <chromas> they're basically motorized telescope mounts but linear
[10:44:58] <Ingar> chromas: afaik there should be some DIY mounts that use the OpenStep system
[10:45:25] * chromas forks it and calls it NeXTStep
[10:45:26] <Ingar> sry, OnStep
