[07:20:10] <kolie> Alright.
[07:20:25] <kolie> I think that's all I got in me for one day.
[07:20:31] <kolie> Hopefully everyone likes the updates.
[07:26:32] <chromas> Thanks mang

[07:50:20] <kolie> hey jan.
[07:51:22] <kolie> 6697 should work on irc.testing.soylentnews.org now.
[07:54:47] <janrinok> kolie - if you think you are going to reset prod can you give us advance notice please. It knocks off lots of other software that is accessing it.
[07:55:22] <kolie> I haven't reset it.
[07:55:41] <kolie> i was working on backups and testing mostly
[07:56:18] <kolie> But everything is stable now, and I published the prod scripts.
[07:56:21] <janrinok> well something broke the connection.... It wasn't local power or feed, they are still working elsewhere. How strange
[07:56:27] <kolie> Connection to whay?
[07:56:30] <janrinok> thanks
[07:57:53] <janrinok> connection to the API. It suddenly wasn't there for a short while. It happen in the middle of a read which caused an exception here. I can fix that but it hasn't happened before.
[07:58:39] <kolie> REST apis are best effort, its best to assume they can fail randomly and include retry/reconnect.
[07:58:58] <kolie> But I don't imagine much will be reset either way.
[07:59:06] <janrinok> I do, but this triggered a local mariadb exception
[07:59:45] <kolie> Ok. Not in a habit of breaking/touching prod, but still a lot to do and I was cleaning stuff up, I think, oh thats what it was, I had to update the mariadb password.
[07:59:49] <janrinok> I should have noted the time but I have restarted them now.
[07:59:51] <kolie> it was a default value.
[08:00:02] <janrinok> OK
[08:02:32] <kolie> https://github.com pretty sure its all sanitized, and backups are being piped regularly and everything seems stable.

[08:02:34] <janrinok> time for your bed isn't it?
[08:02:39] <kolie> yea
[08:02:46] <janrinok> get some rest!
[08:03:02] <janrinok> will chat later!
[08:03:02] <kolie> Always do :) have a good one.

[08:04:58] <chromas> printers--
[08:04:58] <Bender> karma - printers: -7
[08:05:11] <chromas> This Epson is trolling me. Giving me error code 0x69
[08:17:24] <janrinok> nice
[08:17:42] <janrinok> or should that be 0xNICE
[08:23:44] <chromas> Tells me the ink cartridge cover isn't latched, then it can'd ID the cyan ink cartridge even though it knows which one it is, then it's not installed correctly
[08:24:03] <chromas> Tells me to open the top to replace the cartridge, but when I open it starts yelling and telling me to close it
[08:26:16] <janrinok> Yes, that error code means that you only have 93% of your cyan remaining and, to be prudent, you should throw it away an install a completely fresh cartridge. Then the magenta could do with topping up, but it will recommend that you change all remain cartridges....
[08:28:08] <janrinok> I recently threw my last Epson away. I now have 2 Brother laser printers. One is BW and is for regular use, the other is colour and is used more as a photocopier/scanner than as a straight printer.
[08:28:14] <chromas> I miss the olden days when the printer would just do a couple moves and be ready. Now it takes 45 minutes of rolling and scooting and clicking and clacking
[08:28:59] <janrinok> You are showing your age now - that was a long time ago before you needed a yellow cartridge to order to print black text :)
[08:29:45] <chromas> Vote for me and I'll send in the troops to invade Big Printer
[08:30:19] <janrinok> Done - you have my (mailed in by IRC) vote : Chromas YES

[08:35:30] <chromas> "Uncensored"...is censored
[08:41:31] <chromas> laser's the way to go. no ink to dry out
[08:41:48] <chromas> how does the color laser output compare to inkjets though?
[08:42:27] <chromas> I rarely need color, but I wanted to print out the Internet Explorer logo for halloween
[08:43:00] <chromas> But it sounds like the better option is to go dressed as a printer
[08:43:59] <chromas> Internet Explorer may have stagnated the progression of web standards for a long time, but that was actually a good thing
[08:52:15] <janrinok> I'm not sure what you want to compare between colour and BW laser. The colours that it reproduces are identical to the document that I am scanning or photocopying. The colours do not bleed and they have sharp edges if that is what the original has.
[08:54:37] <janrinok> Running cost - the colour laser is about the same but, as you point out, there is no wastage and it kicks into life in about 10 seconds from cold. The BW laser is cheaper that the inkjet printer was per page. I am still on my first laser cartridge after 8 months of regular use.
[08:55:50] <janrinok> I have had the colour laser for over a year and I am on my second box of cartridges but have only recently had to replace 2 of them, the other 3 are still the originals.
[08:56:11] <Ingar> I have a photo inkjet
[08:56:35] <Ingar> it eats inkt like candy, but when I print scans on photo paper, people ask me "where did you find that photo"
[08:56:52] <janrinok> I can have either as wired or wifi network - I tend to use wired because I set the house up for it when I moved in almost 20 years ago.
[08:57:13] <Ingar> wifi is "in the air", wire ftw
[08:58:19] <janrinok> Ingar, I haven't tried laser onto photo paper, on plain paper it is very good. Being 'dry' it doesn't bleed like my old Epson used to do, nor does it have a sponge full of wasted ink in the bottom of the case.
[08:58:41] <Ingar> janrinok: coincidently, my printer is an Epson ;-)
[08:59:09] <Ingar> I only buy third-party ink though
[08:59:16] <janrinok> Yeah, they have not cornered the market but they do appear to be popular.
[08:59:35] <Ingar> before I had an HP printer I only used with official ink, it lasted less than a year
[09:00:32] <Ingar> pro tip if you print photopaper: store it in a warm room
[09:02:43] <janrinok> I had a HP laser (4020) which I bought in 2001 second hand! It broke down last year hence my change to a new printer
[09:06:11] <janrinok> Mind you. lasers can be heavy beasts. An inkjet is considerably lighter (and smaller) and thus perhaps easier to fit into the home. I have a dedicated IT office and a dedicate IT workshop - and I am retired...
[09:08:37] <janrinok> I use only official 'ink' as they are both covered by a 2 year guarantee - I may decide to find a cheaper option later but so far the running costs are reasonable.
[09:15:16] <chromas> Brother lasers are great. You can usually get them under $100. Ours kinda died though when I put thick paper through it. It quit being able to grip the paper anymore, so I guess the cheapos aren't as adjustable
[09:16:31] <Ingar> check if the feed wheels don't feel ultra smooth
[09:16:48] <Ingar> you can also clean them with some rubbing alcohol
[09:17:32] <Ingar> (we do scanners at work, they are mechanically very similar to printers)
[09:20:18] <chromas> Someone needs to come up with an open design for a 2d printer. If they could be as reliable as 3d printers, the world would be a better place

[13:54:02] <fab23> do multiple janrinok* also do more work then just one? :)
[14:01:25] <janrinok> Unfortunately no - but I have enough work to do for the one nick ...
[14:06:31] <fab23> so it will not get boring
[14:21:50] <Fnord666> janrinok, hi
[14:52:51] <janrinok> there's a bit of a time lag :)
[15:46:28] <kolie> o/
[15:46:43] <janrinok> hi kolie
[15:47:04] <Bytram> kolie: Hi!
[15:48:43] <janrinok> hey Bytram - we're online at the same time!
[15:53:23] <Bytram> That doesn't happen often!
[15:53:42] <janrinok> no, it is a pity!
[15:55:01] <janrinok> can you recall how you used to do the funding bar? We don't need it immediately but we will need it in the next few weeks.
[15:55:59] <Bytram> Agreed! Maybe you could take a breach and come visit in person; then we'd be in synch!
[15:56:23] <Bytram> Hmm
[15:57:14] <janrinok> I am sure we can get the display up, but I am not sure about how you managed the transfer of data between Matt Angel and yourself. Was it in the database?
[15:58:11] <Bytram> It's *starting* to come back to me...
[15:58:21] <janrinok> no rush - take your time.
[16:12:22] <Bytram> I didn't! All it was was me telling him the amount collected. IIRC, I had queries on the database; I had *full* read access. If I wanted/needed, I'd issue a command to "turn on" write. It's been so long; I profanely forgot much of in TMB knew it much better than I did!
[16:13:28] <Bytram> I will need to get a refresher from kolie
[16:15:35] <Bytram> Prolly could start be giving ne a list of servers, and what each of them contains.
[16:16:52] <janrinok> Thank you, No, that is fine. I have access to the DB. I have to find some way of getting the figures into the database - it might be automatic I will have to look at the code.
[16:18:45] <janrinok> Bytram - there is only ONE server :) Everything is being installed on one machine in Docker containers. I can talk you through it all when you have time to spare, but you do seem to be busy nowadays.
[16:19:30] <janrinok> There will be a second backup server, but work is still continuing on that.
[16:20:25] <janrinok> Both servers are FREE including the internet connection, at least for the amount of data we are handling currently.
[16:21:03] <Bytram> And... a refresher on how to so some things. I know I knew it, but I blew it, and need a refresher/walk through to tickle my memoriey.
[16:21:31] <janrinok> yeah, let me know when - I am free most of the time.
[16:22:56] <Bytram> TYVM!
[16:32:46] <Bytram> ARCGH! I just accedentally deleter a
[16:34:25] <Bytram> ARCGH! I just accidentally deleted a crap ton of typeing!!!!!!!!
[16:36:23] <Bytram> I'm schedued to go grocery shopping soon; home to try again later. :/
[16:36:52] <Bytram> afk
[16:53:47] <kolie> we haven't really tested IPN either.
[16:54:40] <kolie> I'll probably want to trigger some test ipns and play with the payment setup, or get someone involved who has access to the payment setup because they need to trigger test connectins
[16:55:41] -!- MehBlah has quit [Quit: leaving]
[18:16:26] <kolie> janrinok, that reminds me, I never got formal acceptance of the "free vm" being offered.
[18:16:50] <kolie> I sent an offer for it via email per terms of contract, I never got written confirmation that the free service was accepted.
[18:17:34] <fab23> it then will cost an arm and leg :)
[18:18:40] <kolie> I have two I'm good.
[18:18:59] <kolie> A bill for my time on the other hand is probably good for a kidney.
[18:19:11] <kolie> Replacement testical?
[18:19:17] <kolie> Seems fair.
[18:29:00] <kolie> Alright I'm going to take a personal break. Shit was popping off this morning.
[18:29:08] <kolie> be back in a few hours, 4 or so.
[18:29:25] <kolie> Open to suggestions on which service to migrate next.
[18:57:14] <janrinok> kolie, I will ask John if there has been any more progress. I thought it had been actioned.
[18:58:43] <janrinok> my suggestion for what to migrate next would be email, with fully working dkim etc. We have had problems with mail being rejected with the current setup. Plus we need a simple way of adding and deleting new accounts.

[19:57:45] <Fnord666> janrinok - I can show you how I did the funding bar. It's all in the config -> Blocks -> site news block, including the query to run to get the data.
