[22:24:44] <kolie> I did some optimization. Wanted to know if there was any difference.
[22:24:09] <kolie> Fnord666, u around

[21:06:43] <Bytram> Well... ping me if you need me. I am AFK for a while.
[20:54:56] <Bytram> Fnord666: What's up?
[19:27:42] -!- janrinok has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[19:05:42] <Ingar> someone got his holes stretched today
[18:56:16] -!- isospeculum has quit [Quit: Client closed]
[18:41:54] <isospeculum> All the work kolie is doing will be for naught, if we cannot straighten out the editorial misbehavior.
[18:38:36] <isospeculum> Is that your best Evita Peron imitation?
[18:36:51] <janrinok> go and cry somewhere else please
[18:35:22] <isospeculum> Was there, now it is not. We start with comment deletion, then move to full journal entries, and end with entire front page articles?
[18:34:32] <janrinok> Not by anyone here
[18:33:59] <isospeculum> Did we just have a front page article deleted? What happened to the Trump Fascist discussion? Too much VLM and neo-Knot Seas?
[18:33:51] <janrinok> I'm glad that I have switched to mariadb - after the update to mysql8 I had significant problems.
[18:32:27] <Fnord666> kolie 0.722 sec

[18:29:42] <janrinok-znc> Fnord666, thanks, at least it is not just in my configuration (or imagination!)
[18:29:39] <Fnord666> Bytram 2.02 seconds
[18:29:30] <Fnord666> janrinok - 7.07 sec
[18:28:19] <kolie> theres some tuning parameters i want to put in to increase db sizes.
[18:27:41] <Fnord666> Myself 8 secs
[18:27:35] <Fnord666> janrinok - 6.1 seconds
[18:27:13] <Fnord666> I stand corrected. When I log into my ID (apparently I wasn't logged in as fnord666) in testing, I'm seeing the same long delays loading people's info pages.
[18:26:35] <kolie> def pc here.

[18:24:23] <Fnord666> For the relaod without cache, it's coming it at the following in ms: 2950, 686, 677, 947, 695
[18:20:58] <Fnord666> testing - also 640ms
[18:20:38] <kolie> fnord666, if you shift-f5, so basically don't browser cache, but hit the same page on that long story comments load, does the second non-cache load delay the same?
[18:20:29] <Fnord666> prod - 640ms
[18:20:20] <Fnord666> trying hubie's id
[18:20:13] <Fnord666> Interesting
[18:19:46] <janrinok-znc> I've tried different computers here so it is not a single machine. I will reboot my router in a while to see if the problem goes away. My access to other sites on both sides of the Atlantic is normal.
[18:19:32] <Fnord666> prod 442ms to do the same thing
[18:18:39] <Fnord666> testing, 3402 to load the comments section of a story
[18:17:51] <Fnord666> on testing, 160ms for me, 100ms for kolie, 116 for janrinok
[18:17:26] <janrinok-znc> I never see a delay on prod
[18:17:04] <janrinok-znc> The delay is reproducible for me, but varies between 6 and 12 seconds on testing
[18:16:47] <Fnord666> on prod
[18:16:43] <Fnord666> 640 ms on first load, 320 for kolie, 543 for me.
[18:16:00] <janrinok-znc> Fnord666, can you check some other users please?
[18:15:35] <Fnord666> Let me check prod.
[18:15:30] <Fnord666> I cleared my browser cache and reloaded the page. Still only ~200ms
[18:15:15] <janrinok-znc> Fnord666, do you see the same delay on our live system?
[18:15:12] <kolie> im looking at fluorine.
[18:15:01] <kolie> yea, sounds like db hot caching again, thats what I see.
[18:14:40] <Fnord666> janrinok - The first time I opened that page it took 8 seconds. After that it was very quick. (~200ms)
[18:14:31] <kolie> on live vs testing.
[18:14:28] <kolie> im looking more into the mysql instance.
[18:13:49] <kolie> So that narrows it down quite a bit,
[18:13:48] <janrinok-znc> I know that testing isn't IPv6
[18:13:11] <kolie> Testing also isn't ipv6, and further, if it was a connection issue, it would be on every page, not specific ones only.
[18:13:07] <janrinok-znc> I know, but my connection appears to be going via Linode for anything that has soylentnews.org in the URL
[18:12:27] <janrinok-znc> Yes
[18:12:26] <kolie> Testing isn't linode.
[18:12:20] <kolie> You are saying testing is slow.
[18:12:06] <janrinok-znc> My connection only goes to Linode and is only IPv6. I can do a tracert6 and see it happening.
[18:11:36] <kolie> But all that is cached and not a factor.
[18:11:15] <kolie> I don't know what DNS server you are using.
[18:10:56] <janrinok-znc> who is resolving our DNS now?
[18:10:39] <kolie> It's not even on linode.
[18:10:33] <kolie> Its not an IPv6 problem.
[18:10:24] <janrinok-znc> anyone who wants to know :) There might still be a persistent IPv6 problem which might go away when we move from Linode DNS. I'm just speculating....
[18:08:51] <kolie> Who was that directed at jan
[18:07:33] <janrinok> Well, I can't answer for other users, which is why I have asked FNord666 to take a look. I can only let you know what I am seeing.
[18:06:36] <kolie> its not like its slow across the board, its just specific page/user combos.
[18:06:02] <janrinok> fab23, yes I realise that, I know that I am. But I am connecting to BOTH sites in precisely the same manner but seeing different delays.
[18:05:12] <fab23> ah perfect, so it is reproducable
[18:04:57] <kolie> i got slower loads on his user for sure.
[18:04:40] <kolie> its not isp related.
[18:04:31] <fab23> janrinok-znc: the testing site does only have IPv4, maybe you are accessing it through CGN of your ISP, which may cause issues as well.
[18:03:32] <kolie> im checking for any other differences.
[18:03:05] <janrinok-znc> Just out of interest - are you IPv6 or still on IPv4?
[18:02:32] <janrinok-znc> but I've noted your response, which rules out geographical reasons
[17:59:55] <fab23> ah I see
[17:59:41] <janrinok> Yes but you haven't got the same access to other users' accounts
[17:57:24] <fab23> janrinok: it is quick for me, no delay
[17:54:58] <janrinok> FNord, posting blind. if you get some spare time today or over the weekend can you try opening https://testing.soylentnews.org and other users to see how quickly it opens for you. kolie is seeing no change from the current live, but I am getting a significant 6-12 second delay. I am trying to rule out local factors.
[17:52:51] <janrinok> Fnord666, PING
[17:51:12] <janrinok> Fnord666, are you around?
[16:23:27] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Lawsuit: City Cameras Make It Impossible to Drive Anywhere Without Being Tracked - https://soylentnews.org - "somebody's-watching-me"
[15:22:25] <janrinok-znc> Oh, it isn't quite that bad for us. Well over 2/3rds of our site are fake accounts. But they never get seen. They sometimes create a journal or perhaps make a submission but neither get through to be viewed by the community.

[15:17:13] <fab23> so e.g. setting up just a testing site with e.g. rehash.example.com and try to make it secure with https does trigger crawler and the hostname does also tell then what they may find. So double win for them. :)
[15:15:35] <fab23> janrinok-znc: I have not seen them spaming, but probably depends on the stuff they find on a new site. But crawler are kind of instant of the moment you have a certificate for a hostname.
[15:10:51] <janrinok-znc> No, I was referring to spambots!
[14:58:40] <fab23> janrinok-znc: you mean wildcard certificates? When done through ACME there is no difference in issue time, the process is a little bit different as the DNS challange needs to be used.
[14:51:30] <janrinok-znc> Yep, they don't take long do they?

[13:09:53] <fab23> That is why I usually prefer *.example.com certificates (aka wildcard)
[13:09:34] <fab23> had recently setup a webserver with just a site.example.com and the moment it got the certificate through ACME some crawler hit the site.
[13:07:43] <fab23> mention in a public log (and probably with certifcate which goes into transparency logging and the bot start)
[12:59:55] <janrinok-znc> Nah, it was intelligent...
[12:58:16] <Ingar> or ari
[12:47:52] <janrinok> ... or perhaps is was kolie testing
[12:43:32] <janrinok> lol - it looks like the spambots have already found 'testing' ...

[12:25:50] <janrinok-znc> suggest giving it a different theme if you use it just so that you do not confuse the real site and 'testing'. (I made that mistake some years back, and learned that lesson the hard way!)
[12:25:50] <janrinok-znc> kolie, all, OK, I have spent time on 'testing'. Apart from one minor observation that I have already discussed with kolie, it is a very responsive site and everything appears to be working. I have processed several 'submissions' through to the front page and had no problems. If anyone else wants to have a poke at it then please do. (testing.soylentnews.org). Let either kolie or myself know if you have any problems or observations. I
