[16:11:52] <janrinok> kolie 0/
[16:12:32] <kolie> hey jan
[16:13:35] <janrinok> hi, how are you doing - i'm allowed out of bed at last!
[16:16:03] <kolie> that's great !
[16:16:13] <kolie> small steps and heal well.
[16:18:14] <janrinok> thanks - i emailed you this morning
[16:18:20] <kolie> I got it.
[16:18:25] <janrinok> ok
[16:18:40] <kolie> I'm logged in now poking at stuff, I'm document every thing I do command wise.
[16:19:28] <kolie> The base system we had before was an debian base, doing this on a RH base is going to require changes to the scripts
[16:20:25] <kolie> it looks like smtp is running on this host as well, that might cause soem conflcits - the other docker systems were assumed to be basically running nothign else but stuff in docker.
[16:26:17] <kolie> System seems a little slow, not sure how long this might take to do, seems like a 2010 processor or so.
[16:27:43] <janrinok> Yeah, I know it isn't the latest and greatest.
[16:28:18] <kolie> Ok well, It's likely not going to fit the test site. It's got 857Mb ram free and a 2010 processor. I'll see how far it can get.
[16:29:12] <janrinok> The smtp is for soylentphoenix so I suppose that could be moved to a container as long as there is an easy way to add/remove accounts. But there is not rush as long as it works for the moment - even slowly.
[16:29:15] <kolie> Doesn't have to be the latest and greatest at all.
[16:29:40] <kolie> Just installing packages is being slow, its a slog.
[16:29:48] <janrinok> understood
[16:30:22] <kolie> So how this worked before is we were making it no touch setup, by basically seeing what we need to do, and then codifying that in an ansible system setup script.
[16:30:29] <janrinok> We'll have to look out for another machine that can be a server or pay for a vps somewhere.
[16:31:17] <janrinok> There was a hidden .ansible directory that I am not sure what its purpose is/was
[16:31:45] <kolie> its part of ansibles local config when you install it.
[16:32:41] <janrinok> fliptop got this server through contacts but we have never depended upon it. I just want to get something that we can practice building on.
[16:32:57] <kolie> I understand the purpose.
[16:34:01] <janrinok> as you say, we want to be able to build a no-touch setup too
[16:34:21] <kolie> Yea I'm following the same recipe.
[16:35:19] <janrinok> I've got more powerful machines here but unfortunately I only have an ADSL connection!
[16:36:10] <kolie> Offer stands if you want colo or vps I can sign a contract with phoenix for.
[16:37:19] <janrinok> I'll have to run that by the Board, but thank you for the offer. Can you provide a rough costing to the Board and other interested parties so we can work out the monthly/annual costs etc
[16:38:09] <kolie> Free.
[16:38:59] <janrinok> that's the sort of costs we like :) A generous offer. I will let them know that you have made it - unless you wish to make it directly to the Board? Your call....
[16:39:55] <kolie> You can let them know, it's the same offer as it's always been. I can provide details about the arrangement as such but, essentially, it's the same colo/vps service I'd offer commercially, but for SN, for the purposes of SN, at no cost.
[16:40:24] <janrinok> I will pass that on. Thank you.
[16:40:48] <janrinok> Did you have a good weekend with the kids?
[16:41:04] <kolie> non kid weekend, but it was great.
[16:41:16] <janrinok> good to hear.
[16:41:47] <kolie> I'm getting an upgrade on my pilot certificate, so was a bit of that, and my gf her kids birthday, so doing that.
[16:41:52] <kolie> Good times, with family and such.
[16:43:44] <janrinok> I was supposed to attend a luncheon yesterday partly in my honour I suppose. I help out in various ways in the community. Small village life sort of thing. I couldn't attend but a group of them arrived at my home late afternoon with a bag of edible goodies (and cake!) so I didn't miss it entirely. The nurses knew it was happening but had kept quiet about it!
[16:44:07] <kolie> How long you got ahead of you with recovery and stuff?
[16:44:49] <kolie> You got the recognition and support that's awesome.
[16:45:52] <janrinok> Well I can do anything that doesn't hurt basically, so I will get better each day hopefully. I have more surgery in the coming months as things stand at the moment but I will cross that bridge as i come to it. Hopefully, apart from the surgery itself, I am hoping that I will be able to work from by bed with a keyboard on my knee.
[16:47:36] <janrinok> I get tired quite easily but I have no reason to keep to any specific schedule so I sleep when I need to.
[16:50:43] <kolie> Getting old is inevitable. Glad you are sticking to doing what you can.
[17:15:08] <kolie> Once we get this setup on a system, a second system should be able to be boostrapped from here as well. I'm fixing up the docker playbook.
[17:16:04] <kolie> actually looks good so far.
[17:20:26] <janrinok> Sounds as if you are making good progress - albeit on a slower machine than either of us wanted to see.
[17:20:55] <kolie> It seems ok I don't have a problem with it, just noticing the commands took awhile and so not sure if the stack will run.
[17:21:05] <kolie> What uhh infra do we want to see first?
[17:21:12] <janrinok> I only know one good way to find out...
[17:21:21] <kolie> I'm putting in traefik to get it going.
[17:21:48] <kolie> I'll need dns entries created too.
[17:22:47] <janrinok> I would like to see rehash if that is what you are asking. I suppose Paul is the guy for the dns entries, unless you can do it from there? (Well outside my area!)
[17:23:01] <kolie> What I'd like to setup
[17:23:06] <kolie> is staging.solyentphoenix
[17:23:15] <janrinok> yep that sounds good
[17:23:18] <kolie> and have *.staging and staging point to this box we are wotrking on.
[17:24:11] <janrinok> I can start looking at it from the user's point of view and see if there are any warts or whatever
[17:24:39] <kolie> Ok well need those DNS entries and then I can start doing more.
[17:25:28] <janrinok> If it works as a slow secondary system in case we lose the main site we can at least keep the community together.
[17:26:40] <janrinok> I haven't got Pauls phone number
[17:29:07] <janrinok> Have you any ideas as to how we eventually transfer the main db to this machine sometime in the future. I'm not sure how much downtime we would need. I would suggest that once we have this as staging - and if you have the time!!! - we look at re-configuring the current staging to be the main server.
[17:29:35] <kolie> Yea the process is, make site read only, download database, restore database.
[17:29:53] <kolie> I've done it in testing, and ideally we'd make an ansible script to do it once we find the magic formula
[17:29:57] <kolie> and then just press the button.
[17:31:25] <kolie> That was the idea with staging is we figure out the scenario, set it up, make a script that codifies the knowledge learned, then actual operations is limited to running scripts we've figured out in staging.
[17:32:00] <janrinok> I could find backups but I couldn't transfer them anywhere useful. I'm not sure if that is a kerberos issue or whatever. I had intended to do work/learning on a copy on one of my servers here but having built the container I couldn't transfer any useful data whatsoever.
[17:32:21] <kolie> just ssh copy them to your local machine.
[17:32:39] <kolie> if you have ssh, and you see the file, you can download it.
[17:34:52] <janrinok> I tried but for some reason it wouldn't work. I transfer loads of data by ssh but for some reason not from our site's servers. It was very frustrating.
[17:36:43] <kolie> I can give you a backup, they are taken daily on the main system.
[17:37:29] <janrinok> that would be useful thanks, I have machines here waiting to go.
[17:38:09] <janrinok> is that a data backup or a full system (including configuration etc) backup?
[17:40:08] <kolie> just the db.
[17:41:18] <kolie> The configuration is the system as it is, so all that's lost to time.
[17:41:32] <kolie> That's again why the playbooks and putting all the "config" in git as ansible and docker is useful.
[17:42:43] <janrinok> it all makes sense.
[17:47:52] <janrinok> Is there anything I can be doing to help you?
[17:49:17] <kolie> not for now just dns.
[18:08:12] <janrinok> I've emailed Fliptop but I don't suppose he is watching the screen like I am.
[18:18:24] <kolie> yea thats another thing, we were setting up powerdns for the nameservers.
[18:19:58] <janrinok> that doesn't mean much to me but it sounds impressive.
[18:20:02] * janrinok wad
[18:20:05] <kolie> the uhh
[18:20:10] * janrinok wanders off to google
[18:20:12] <kolie> dns was hosted on the linode system
[18:20:31] <kolie> and it was using the old school named
[18:20:35] <kolie> bind
[18:20:53] <janrinok> yep - found it! Thanks :)
[18:21:01] <kolie> which is fine. but if we were containering everything, storing it in pDNS made it easier to delegate to people, and manage from a GUI, and also backup and document.
[18:23:11] <janrinok> Well anything that makes it easier to manage has my vote. I will read more about it in a short while when I return to my recently overused bed!
[18:24:12] <janrinok> I take you have not had a response from Fliptop?
[18:25:07] <janrinok> He is probably in his workshop doing things to pieces of wood.
[19:10:14] <janrinok> I've got to go - I think that you have already called it a day and there is not much you can do without the DNS. Tomorrow maybe!
