[09:30:19] <Ingar> maybe IRC should stop cloaking hostnames
[09:31:40] <chromas> So we can see all the dozens of vpns?
[09:31:54] <Ingar> and block them
[09:32:12] <chromas> oh that doesn't affect blocking
[09:32:25] <Ingar> I suspect the current influx of irc idiots is related to known trolls
[09:35:09] <chromas> Say it isn't so
[09:35:33] <Ingar> it isn't so
[09:35:41] <Ingar> isn't it
[09:35:44] <chromas> whew!
[11:20:46] <ted-ious> This is basically an ad but weren't people here talking about document collaboration without google?
[11:20:50] <ted-ious> https://www.theverge.com
[11:20:50] <systemd> ^ 03Proton just launched a privacy-focused alternative to Google Docs
[11:25:11] <chromas> Collabora, which is basically a web interface for libreoffice
[11:26:07] <chromas> I don't know why google docs got so popular. ms office on the web is free for personal use and is over 9,000 times better than google
[11:26:18] <chromas> maybe they weren't doing it when google docs came out
[11:29:27] <ted-ious> I think that's right.
[11:29:57] <ted-ious> Google docs had a free version for years before microsoft as far as I remember.
[11:30:23] <chromas> and it still sucks ass even compared to libreoffice
[11:30:54] <chromas> it's worse than openoffice was when people said openoffice was useless garbage but now everyone uses it
[11:31:27] <ted-ious> Google's?
[11:31:32] <chromas> yeah
[11:32:12] <ted-ious> I've heard people say they're happy using it mainly because it's easy and it's integrated with gmail.
[11:32:15] <chromas> my favorite feature is when you go to make some edits and then it decides you're logged out, so you have to login then go make the same changes again
[11:33:10] <ted-ious> Was it here that we were talking about that woman who wrote an entire novel in gdocs and lost it for some reason nobody could explain?
[11:33:24] <chromas> collabora renders the documents server-side then streams them to the browser like a remote desktop. it's alright, but it also loves to disconnect if you're idle very long
[11:33:47] <chromas> Maybe. Never trust the cloud
[11:33:55] <ted-ious> I don't. :)
[11:34:19] <ted-ious> I felt bad for her but I couldn't understand why she never even emailed a copy to herself.
[11:34:39] <ted-ious> Not that emailing from gdocs to gmail will help you if google decides to un-person you.
[11:35:30] <chromas> We had a spreadsheet that one day decided we didn't have write access to it. All the permissions were correct and I even went in and re-set them and it still wouldn't work, so I just made a copy and we used that
[11:35:40] <chromas> then suddenly the other one started working again a few weeks ago
[11:35:48] <Ingar> I had to get some work done in excell, got so infuriated with it I installed libreoffice
[11:36:15] <chromas> but excel's got that animated cell pointer. How can you live without that?
[11:39:16] <chromas> I wonder if Quattro has animations yet
[11:39:41] <chromas> it had support for a million rows decades and decades before excel
[11:41:56] <ted-ious> Excel had a row limit?
[11:42:36] <chromas> I think it was 65k
[11:43:13] <chromas> Not that you should ever have a spreadsheet anywhere near that size, since databases excist
[11:43:25] <ted-ious> 65k rows ought to be enough for anybody.
[11:45:02] <chromas> I could be thinking of microsoft works, which was the claris works of microsoft office
[11:46:01] <chromas> I seem to recall that MS Works and Windows 95 keys were compatible with each other
[11:47:26] <chromas> Excel had magic that Libreoffice just won't bother to implement, like the Add Table function
[12:19:07] <Ingar> chromas: excell likes to animate me with random colors, random fonts, broken formulas and related fun stuff
[12:19:11] <Ingar> I wasn't amused :D
[12:20:15] <chromas> Did you check your PC for aids?
[12:32:42] <Ingar> I have endpoint security
[12:32:55] <Ingar> although it warned me a program made a connection to the internet
[16:13:27] -!- sirecote has quit [Quit: "Hang Up"]
[16:33:07] -!- alexbst has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[17:03:37] <drussell_> These days it would be an oddity to have a program not make a connection to the internet!
[17:04:29] <drussell_> Warning: This program did not "phone home" so it will now be terminated for lack of security concerns.
[18:25:18] <wraith> drussell_: how did you get the italics going for "not?" are you using hexchat?
[18:26:25] -!- systemd has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[18:26:29] <prg> I'm just running everything that might be somewhat suspect in firejail --net=none
[19:16:52] <AlwaysNever> wraith: in my console-based IRC client I see that "not" as: ] not ] but without the spaces
[19:49:48] -!- aqu4bot has quit [Quit: aqu4bot baking shutting down.]
[20:41:08] <chromas> not just italics but bold as well
[20:55:51] <wraith> AlwaysNever: gotcha. seems like a gui thing
[21:11:52] <ted-ious> I didn't even know irc could display those.
[21:15:37] <ted-ious> chromas: What did you type to get all of that?
[21:32:19] -!- drussell_ has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[21:32:45] <wraith> it depends on your client, ted-ious
[21:32:59] <wraith> if you're on irssi, you can use asterisks to set bold
[21:33:33] <wraith> if you set emphasis_italics to on, you can use /foward slashes/ for emphasis
[21:33:55] <wraith> you *bold* text and /emphasize/ others
[21:34:07] <wraith> _underscore_ for underlining
[21:35:26] <ted-ious> That's interesting.
[21:36:23] <ted-ious> Your /emphasize/ didn't do anything but chromas's had bold italics and then regular italics and bold.
[21:36:41] <ted-ious> When I _underscore_ it doesn't do anything either.
[21:36:51] <ted-ious> Oh wait yes it does.
[21:39:14] <ted-ious> Now /italics/ works but it still shows the slashes for me but for other people they're invisible sometimes.
[21:39:54] <AlwaysNever> in epic4 only chromas bold does work
[21:40:04] <AlwaysNever> all the rest, take full damage :-)
[23:56:09] <chromas> https://en.wikichip.org
[23:57:14] <chromas> ircle had a better color scheme and before mirce but nobody uses them
[23:57:20] <chromas> mirc
