[01:10:46] -!- Runaway1956 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[01:39:20] <wraith> it's about time
[03:33:07] -!- Runaway1956 [Runaway1956!~OldGuy@the.abyss.stares.back] has joined #soylent
[04:41:32] <chromas> Ingar: same but ddr5. In fact I could only run two cards until the first BIOS update. Now I can run it all but there's no option for xmp
[07:23:43] <Ingar> my next PC will be small and quiet
[07:24:31] <Ingar> and maybe not even x86
[07:27:50] <chromas> mine's usually quiet, except sometimes the water pump rattles
[07:28:59] <chromas> water cooling's...cool, but unnecessary. you can get those giant air coolers for like $30 now and they're more than enough unless you're overclocking
[07:35:52] <Ingar> chromas: I'm currently using an all-in-one, I have Ryzen 3950X and it can get mighty hot
[07:36:09] <chromas> they still make those?
[07:36:48] <chromas> water cooling might be right for you. you could hang the radiator outside, on the back of the case
[07:39:08] <Ingar> I mean one of them all-in-one cpu water cooling thing
[07:39:20] <chromas> ahhh
[07:39:32] <chromas> I was picturing those computers built into a monitor
[07:40:01] <Ingar> nah, huge case, DIY build
[07:40:04] <chromas> but also the last couple generations of amd cpu always run at their maximum temperature
[07:40:23] <Ingar> chromas: yeah, and I really don't like that
[07:40:28] <chromas> however you cool it down, it will overclock itself until it hits a certain temperature
[07:40:38] <chromas> you can usually change it in the bios though
[07:40:54] <Ingar> I prefer longevity over max performance
[07:41:34] <chromas> according to the internets, lowering that maximum temperature gains a lot of cooling with only a small drop in performance
[07:42:03] <chromas> you should be able to lower it to like 65 or something
[07:43:16] <chromas> I just put a water block on my gpu. it's highest temperatures are almost 20° lower than the idling cpu
[09:23:47] <chromas> =yt presidents peaches

[09:34:26] <Ingar> damnit Kodak bastards
[09:34:35] <Ingar> removing user manuals from their website
[10:02:06] <Ingar> chromas: that pop pop pop pop song, was that also presidents ?
[10:02:12] <Ingar> same era as I recall
[10:02:39] <Ingar> ofc web searching something like "pop pop pop pop" is futile
[10:03:54] <chromas> not sure. I don't recognize it by that description
[10:04:18] <chromas> a woman came in though and started singing "millions of peaches"

[12:21:55] <systemd> ^ 03Fatboy Slim - Role Model (Official Video)
[12:22:16] <chromas> Fatboy Slim putting out new stuff, with the most advanced and intricate lyrics
[12:23:01] <chromas> looks like stable diffusion inpainting with an animated control net
[12:35:51] <chromas> > developers of GNOME and systemd fighting over who is the bigger ahole
[12:35:51] <chromas> > The question is, do you prefer the ones that add features to pid 1 or the one that remove them from your DE?
[13:45:14] <Ingar> the latter, because I don't use gnome
[13:45:56] <Ingar> systemd, I can live with now (at least its core functionality) pulseaudio on the other hand, makes me want to skin someone alive
[13:46:19] <Ingar> my pentium had better audio
[13:48:29] <chromas> nobody uses pulseaudio anymore
[13:49:35] <chromas> it was the xkcd-style solution to the too-many-sound-daemons problem, but now pipewire replaces it and also jack if you want to
[13:51:08] <chromas> I've also noticed on all the modern motherboards I've seen, mic input always has super quiet sound and when it's amplified it's all full of noise. Those little stick mics on MULTIMEDIA PCs in the 90s had better sound quality
[16:08:12] <Ingar> I have a real soundcard
[16:10:06] <Ingar> I always found sound daemons a solution in search for a problem
[16:13:28] -!- Runaway1956 has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[16:14:28] <Ingar> chromas: pulse, pipe, ... they all crackle
[19:01:08] <chromas> the problem is alsa's lack of software mixer and/or it being disabled for some reason
[19:01:38] * chromas spackles the pulse/pipe crackles
