[03:42:46] <c0lo> breaking: Assange freed! Multiple stories in the news
[03:44:29] <c0lo> Ummmm... no, not yet freed, but speculation that he may be.

[04:12:37] <chromas> desktop rebooted for mysterious reason. thanks, linux
[04:13:08] <chromas> "File /var/log/journal/[blah blah]/system.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing."
[04:13:19] <chromas> good to know there's nothing in the log about it
[04:15:23] <ted-ious> You should find that guy who was here advocating systemd and have a few not nice words with him. :)
[04:16:31] <chromas> I wonder how much of a text-based syslog would be stored to disk if the system suddenly rebooted
[04:19:20] -!- systemd [systemd!~systemd@pid1] has joined #soylent
[04:22:54] <ted-ious> Depends on how much is still in dirty cache.
[04:23:28] <ted-ious> If the last entry is more than 5 seconds old and the disk isn't super busy it should be 100%.

[08:13:31] <chromas> I watched the kernel log from a remote box. the last things were about invalid opengl operations. I didn't know opengl was still around
[08:14:27] <chromas> I don't know that it's the cause, but it seems to have started rebooting itself when I switched from lan-mouse to input-leap. not sure how it even could cause a reboot though
[08:23:16] <ted-ious> What is lan-mouse?
[08:23:41] <ted-ious> Are these some kind of remote desktop things?
[08:24:47] <chromas> they call it a software kvm. I can move my mouse to the edge of the screen and then it controls another pc, so it looks as if it's just another screen on the one I'm using
[08:25:19] <chromas> lan-mouse has a dorky guhnome4 looking interface and sometimes closes itself, though it otherwise worked fine
[08:25:49] <chromas> there are also hotkeys and stuff
[08:26:07] <chromas> optional shared clipboard and file sharing
[08:27:07] <chromas> I have a mini pc that just shows camera views and occasionally I want to click or whatever without needing to pull out another keyboard
[08:28:04] <chromas> on wayland they use a 'portal' for sharing inputs, and that's pretty new in kde (though somehow lan-mouse could use it before it was there) so maybe it kills the compositor in a way that kills the graphics driver

[08:30:08] <chromas> brits love them some bands named talk
[08:31:05] <ted-ious> Ok that sounds like something I've seen before that I think was called x2vnc.
[08:31:28] <chromas> maybe but there's no screen sharing or anything
[08:31:39] <ted-ious> Except that is supposed to take a linux desktop's mouse and keyboard and send it to a windows system running vnc.
[08:31:59] <ted-ious> But you want the windows mouse to be exported right?
[08:32:20] <ted-ious> Oh I forgot you are using wayland.
[08:32:26] <chromas> kde has something like that. you can run a vnc server on your desktop and connect to it from a tablet and then use the tablet as an extra screen
[08:32:53] <chromas> yeah it just controls mouse and keyboard but you still use the screen on the other pc(s)
[08:33:09] <chromas> so I guess technically a kv(not m)
[08:35:46] <chromas> I also just happened to replace the cooler on my gpu and update the bios firmware on that pc, but it wasn't until I tried input-leap that it started rebooting
[08:35:49] <chromas> I blame systemd
[08:36:42] <chromas> asus--
[08:37:11] <chromas> I updated firmware because I couldn't get XMP to work...it only had the Disabled option. well now it's completely removed
[08:39:19] <ted-ious> What is xmp?
[08:42:17] <chromas> intel's version of storing the memory settings in the memory. each ddr generation has a certain speed that's official but is way slower than what you actually buy. if you don't change it you're most likely running it way slower than it should be. xmp (and whatever amd calls it, docp or something) has all the various settings stored so they can be applied automatically
[08:43:53] <chromas> so it's like a settings profile for the memory, stored on the memory card because it can't set itself, but the bios can read it and set it
[08:45:32] <chromas> expo on amd
[08:47:04] <ted-ious> Oh neat!
[08:47:26] <ted-ious> I thought you had to set that in the bios yourself if you wanted to overclock your ram.
[08:48:49] <chromas> if it's turned off and you're not manually setting your ram speeds, you're effectively underclocking it
[08:49:24] <chromas> I think my ram is like 4500 whatever units but it's stuck at the default 3200
