[07:36:18] <chromas> oh neat, there's a languagetool extension for firefox
[07:36:33] <chromas> I can point it at my own server for grammar checking
[07:38:10] <Ingar> does it do french grammar ?
[07:41:22] <chromas> yeah
[07:41:28] <chromas> I don't know how well though
[07:43:00] <chromas> it doesn't look as advanced as grammarly
[07:43:14] <chromas> I haven't seen any suggestions about passive voice or anything
[07:45:53] <chromas> grammalecte, a tool specifically for french

[09:30:45] <soylent666> Ingar is not gay, and hairless, and is a sockpuppet of JK Rowling. Ban him, now, he has personally attacked me.

[10:22:31] <Ingar> JK Rowling, isn't that the woman who wrote LoTR for kids?
[10:23:40] -!- Runaway1956 has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[10:30:54] <Runaway> Blahhhhh - woke up, no internet - I foolishly tried looking at settings before coffee was even ready - after a couple minutes feeling stupid, I tried another machine
[10:31:29] <Runaway> it had no internet either, so I reset modem, and router, reconnected VPN, and like magic it works
[10:31:53] <Runaway> Great way to start a day - at least the coffee is done now.
[12:21:44] -!- fab23 [fab23!fabian@ysxbxfyv.wenks.ch] has joined #soylent
[12:29:23] <fab23> one of my systems (where the irc client is) did a crash reboot in the middle of the night.
[12:30:06] <janrinok> any idea why?
[12:30:25] <fab23> janrinok: unfortunately no.
[12:31:49] <fab23> chromas: I would not use Grammarly, see https://www.kolide.com (have it from https://news.ycombinator.com) is more then 2 years old news.
[12:31:51] <systemd> ^ 03Is Grammarly a Keylogger? What Can You Do About It?
[12:39:17] <fab23> janrinok: at least there is a backlog from this channel to be able to see what I missed. :)
[13:42:01] <fab23> from the fortune cookie: "A celebrity is a person who is known for his well-knownness." :)
[13:47:48] <janrinok> :)
[14:42:26] <Ingar> helpdesk for beginners: did you plug in the cable?
[14:42:43] <Ingar> advanced helpdesk: did you PROPERLY plug in the cable?
[14:44:02] <Ingar> that was a no
[15:08:13] <fab23> :)
[15:09:15] <janrinok> I also laughed at Ingar's comment - but I couldn't think of the symbol for a snigger
[15:11:28] <fab23> actually we should use proper emojis like 🙀
[15:13:54] <janrinok> I have banned all emojis from my computers.
[15:16:45] <fab23> janrinok: oh nooo
[15:19:21] * requerdanos reacted ❤️ to "<janrinok> I have banned all emojis from my computers."
[15:19:44] <janrinok> lol
[15:56:00] <Ingar> 🖥️
[15:56:30] <Ingar> and more important 🔭
[15:57:04] <Ingar> I put a different emoji in PS1 on each machine
[17:33:50] <chromas> Wasn't LoTR LoTR for kids?
[17:37:57] <chromas> that kolide article sucks
[17:41:02] <ted-ious> I think he wrote much of it for his son so yes.
[17:44:22] <chromas> 470 pages later, so far their smoking gun is "it scans the editor you're in when you activate it and doesn't ignore already-typed text and also doesn't have a 40GB list of keywords to tell it what fields to ignore"
[17:47:46] <chromas> "Here’s my take on what this commenter is suggestion"
[17:47:54] <chromas> someone needs to install Grammarly ;)
[17:55:37] <chromas> MS and Corel Offices have grammar checking. I wonder if someone could use VBA to write a languagetool server using office to do the work
[18:30:56] <ted-ious> We have open source spell checkers that you can install and run without talking to the internet.
[18:31:11] <ted-ious> Why can't we have the same kind of grammar checkers?
[18:58:08] <chromas> we do. it's called languagetool
[19:01:09] <chromas> why it's a web server instead of a library is a mystery though
[19:01:19] <chromas> maybe it was created in the year of microservices
[19:02:27] <ted-ious> But that's a java component for libre office.
[19:02:40] <ted-ious> I should have used the example of ispell.
[19:07:09] <chromas> Maybe it's just not important enough for anyone to bother making something in a real language
