[02:21:01] <chromas> Maybe it's part of the IBM standard from whence we got ctrl-ins and stuff
[02:22:08] <drussell> PCs and XTs didn't even have an F11 or F12
[02:24:36] <chromas> Which was the one with F13-F24?
[02:33:45] <drussell> Some of the terminals like the 3486 were available with the double-row of functon keys along the top and extra clear/print/play/record/help keys along the left where the original PC had the function keys(the 122-key layout)
[02:34:48] <drussell> The original PC was only what, 84 keys or something? No numeric pad even.
[02:37:58] <drussell> Even the 3270 might have been available with the 122-key for some applications, I think, but lots of them didn't have that many kets.
[02:45:48] <chromas> I wish bigass keyboards were more popular
[02:46:09] <chromas> I needs me 24 Fkeys
[02:46:35] <chromas> Even though they're considered multimedia keys now I guess
[02:48:51] <chromas> For some reason ergo means having the tiniest keyboard possible and keeping your hands perfectly still

[08:42:02] <Ingar> my keyboard has a column of extra functions keys on the left
[08:42:11] <Ingar> it sucks, because I always hot those instead of left ctrl
[08:42:16] <Ingar> *hit those
[08:42:36] <chromas> Recommended solution: Remap all keys to ctrl
[08:42:51] <Ingar> I mapped it to enter for extra fun
[08:43:05] <chromas> map one to ctrl-alt-backspace
[08:43:43] <Ingar> afaik that combo has been disabled by default for ages
[08:44:17] <chromas> set up a macro on another one to toggle the combo
[08:44:24] <chromas> introduce a little extra randomness
[08:45:06] <Ingar> you want the "do you feel lucky punk" key
[08:45:37] <chromas> well? do you? feel lucky?
[08:45:59] <chromas> =yt loaded weapon do you feel lucky
[08:46:00] <systemd> https://youtube.com - Do you feel lucky... punk? - Loaded Weapon (06; 12,391 views; 👍42 👎[hidden by butthurt Google employees])
[09:05:02] <Ingar> I feel as lucky as Jesus on Good Friday
[09:05:27] <chromas> is that the one where they can still eat meat on a Friday?
[09:05:53] <Ingar> no, it's the one were you get nailed to the cross
[09:06:32] <chromas> hardwood strap-on
[09:06:52] <janrinok> a true carpenter's finish
[09:07:53] <janrinok> Ingar, how did the telescope rebuild go - is it much smoother now?
[09:08:13] <Ingar> janrinok: smooth as an android's behind
[09:08:33] <Ingar> still haven't had the chance to field test it though
[09:08:35] <janrinok> lol - not a description I have heard before but one that sums it up perfectly
[09:08:35] <Ingar> damn weather
[09:09:00] <Ingar> janrinok: it's a quote from star treke generations (IIRC) :p
[09:09:11] <janrinok> hope you have a chance to test it before you need it in 'anger' so to speak
[09:09:34] <Ingar> https://www.youtube.com
[09:09:35] <systemd> ^ 03Smooth as an androids bottom
[09:10:32] <Ingar> janrinok: actually the goal was to build some experience before I take my other scope apart :)
[09:10:52] <Ingar> and to give to old junk some maintenance ofc
[09:11:21] <Ingar> from en engineering point of view, it's quite an interesting construction
[09:13:53] <janrinok> I thought that the youtube video was going to be your work rebuilding the telescope - but thanks for the link anyway :)
[09:14:23] <Ingar> http://ingar.intranifty.net didn't I link it before?
[09:15:03] <janrinok> if you did I missed it - thanks, watching now
[09:15:08] <Ingar> np
[09:17:17] <janrinok> I'm glad to see you didn't disturb the actual optics!
[09:17:44] <Ingar> I already did that 1 or 2 yrs ago ;)
[09:17:44] <janrinok> Very impressive bit of renovation!
[09:17:53] <Ingar> took out the mirror and cleaned it
[09:18:22] <Ingar> janrinok: thanks ^^
[09:18:54] <janrinok> I once did it to a photographic lens - it came apart much easier than it went back together again. It was an old lens but my efforts didn't make it any better....
[09:19:59] <Ingar> taking it apart was actually the hardest
[09:20:45] <Ingar> there was one axis where you had to remove a cover screw, and then by rotating it you could find three other small screws to loosen it
[09:20:57] <Ingar> that took a while to figure out
[09:23:44] <Ingar> I still do need to realign the optics though
[09:23:53] <Ingar> ("collimation")
[09:24:07] <Ingar> in essence, aligne the two mirrors in the tube
[09:24:21] <Ingar> that is a shitty job :D
[09:24:57] <janrinok> good luck - I've decided that doing optical cleaning myself is not really a good idea...
[09:25:23] <chromas> Now it's still dirty, but also smeared!
[09:25:37] <janrinok> lol
[09:25:46] <Ingar> everyone advises against touching the optics unless it is absolutely needed
[09:25:59] <janrinok> I should have listened to them
[09:26:11] <chromas> inappropriate touching usually leads to bad optics
[09:26:28] <chromas> janrinok hasn't listened to many love songs
[09:26:39] <janrinok> my special gloves and 'dust-free' environment didn't help as much as I had hoped that they would.
[09:26:59] <Ingar> dust and dirt in itself is not that much of a problem
[09:27:06] <Ingar> that's why we have flat frames!
[09:27:29] <Ingar> (white light reference picture to callibrate your images)
[09:28:11] <janrinok> perhaps it is different for photographic lenses. I don't intend finding out in the future.
[09:29:39] <Ingar> I think I have a picture from whem I took out the mirror
[09:29:50] * Ingar dives into archives
[09:32:54] <Ingar> http://ingar.intranifty.net
[09:33:46] <janrinok> how did that dust get inside the 'scope in the first place?
[09:34:10] <chromas> Dust...uh, finds a way
[09:34:29] <Ingar> the mirror sits on the bottom of the tube, the other end of the tube is open
[09:34:33] <Ingar> there's no lens
[09:34:47] <Ingar> it eats dust like candy
[09:34:51] <janrinok> ah, not what I imagined
[09:35:38] <Ingar> https://en.wikipedia.org
[09:35:39] <systemd> ^ 03Reflecting telescope - Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org )
[09:36:37] <janrinok> OK, but photo mirror lenses always have a glass lens at the business end.
[09:37:41] <Ingar> janrinok: my imaging scope is a refractor with glass lenses, more compareable to a photo lens
[09:37:57] <chromas> With a reflector scope, the tube is essentially a giant lens hood?
[09:38:24] <Ingar> chromas: indeed it is, and to hold the scondary mirror
[09:38:27] <chromas> or does it have a tiny mirror in the middle at the end like some camera lenses
[09:38:30] <chromas> ah
[09:39:39] <Ingar> there are other telescope designs ofc, that do that
[09:40:19] <chromas> Would a reflector make a good 'telephoto' lens for shooting landscapes and stuff?
[09:40:53] <chromas> unwieldiness aside
[09:40:55] <Ingar> too big
[09:41:03] <Ingar> and imagine a lens with 750mm focal length
[09:41:34] <chromas> yes, I want to see the repeater antennas on the mount
[09:42:13] <chromas> or zoom in on the neighbors when they're dealing drugs
[09:42:13] <Ingar> I taped a wifi receiver to my other mount :p
[09:42:49] <Ingar> chromas: I did a test once when I was young, from 1km away I could see the brand of orange juice they were drinking
[09:43:12] <Ingar> and that was with cheap optics, +30years ago
[09:43:40] <Ingar> (imagine the stuff actual govt services have at their disposal)
[09:44:13] <janrinok> ...cough
[09:44:34] <chromas> quite a stash of sockpuppets, for one thing
[09:44:46] <Ingar> :D
[09:45:19] <chromas> have you ever tracked a satellite and photographed it?
[09:45:51] <Ingar> nope, I have plenty of satellite trails on my pictures put never tried a satellite itself
[09:46:01] <Ingar> they move quite fast so it ain't easy
[09:46:30] <Ingar> I also have no idea what kidn of magnification you'd need
[09:47:18] <Ingar> I'm somewhat at the low end in terms of gear too
[09:47:27] <Ingar> decent low end, but far from NASA regions
[09:55:15] <Ingar> maybe I should go outside and try some birding with that scope :D
[09:55:28] <Ingar> for the science!
[09:56:35] <chromas> That could be pretty rad
[09:57:09] <chromas> Long-distance bee
[09:57:37] <Ingar> nah it can't focus that nearby
[09:58:03] <Ingar> more like, see a bee sitting on a rock from 100m away
[09:58:28] <Ingar> (with my smaller scope I can see bugs on my neighbour's chimney ;)
