[08:53:13] <systemd> ✓ Sub-ccess! "03'Dire Emergency': Ship Strikes Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, Causing Partial Collapse" (15p) -> https://soylentnews.org
[08:53:49] <Runaway1956> I read a couple articles before I found that it was a huge container ship that struck the bridge.
[08:54:05] <Runaway1956> Was trying to figure out how a "boat" could collapse a bridge, lol
[08:55:02] <janrinok> It did a good job of it whatever it was!
[08:55:29] <janrinok> They will not rebuild that in the near future
[08:57:12] <janrinok> I cannot understand how a single vessel could destroy 2 spans yet the intermediate support seems to be still standing. Any ideas?
[08:57:43] <drussell> Some insurance company just pooped their pants.
[08:58:53] <drussell> That'll be a costly payout.
[09:00:04] <janrinok> That is assuming that the insurance premiums were being paid and not cut as a 'cost-saving' measure. After all, bridges never fall down, do they?
[09:00:59] <janrinok> Well, apart from the ones that do, of course.
[09:01:04] <drussell> The container ship's insurance company
[09:01:48] <drussell> They need massive insurance coverage in case they smoosh a bridge or block a canal for a week.
[09:01:50] <janrinok> got to prove negligence first - if they argue that there was a technical failure they could drag this out for years
[09:02:43] <drussell> Oh, they'll drag it out in court for a decade, but they'll have to pay, eventually.
[09:03:17] <janrinok> but, as you correctly say, the vessel should be insured. But a decade delay is another decade of interest in the insurance company's pocket.
[09:03:23] <drussell> They'll try to get it back from the ship's owner, or crew, or something, but they'll have to pay it.
[09:19:35] <chromas> Probably softened the steel beams with jet fuel

[14:53:07] <systemd> ^ 03Video shows moment a Baltimore bridge collapses after ship collision ( https://www.youtube.com )
[14:53:20] <drussell> The ship is called "The DALI" and is registered in Sinagpore.
[14:53:32] <drussell> The insurer is Britannia P&I Club
[14:54:48] <drussell> "Ship lost power before crash: Video shows the moment the entire 1.6-mile-long, four-lane bridge crumbled into the water, after the vessel struck one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the ships lights flickered and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop
[14:54:48] <drussell> incoming traffic from going onto the bridge. "
[14:55:09] <drussell> "The ship was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk and was carrying their customers' cargo, the Danish shipping company told CNN. The company said no Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel. It said the ship, DALI, is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group."
[14:56:01] <drussell> Synergy Group Corp. is a South American conglomerate created and owned by Germán Efromovich. The group is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
[14:56:32] <drussell> There will be plenty of circular finger pointing parties for the forseeable future.
[14:58:05] <janrinok> thanks for the update
[15:00:46] <drussell> The only "saving grace" if you can call it that, is that there were few people on the bridge at the time compared to, say, during rush hour traffic. Two people were rescued from the water and aparently at least 7 are missing (dead) although obviously there may be more.
[15:01:44] <drussell> The financial losses will obviously include the bridge itself, but also all the loss of port operations (that port is the 9th largest in the US) until they can un-block the area by removing all the old bridge from the water, it is blocking the entire river.
[15:02:53] <drussell> I suppose it's also going to cause local traffic havoc for the forseeable future since the brige carried about 35,000 vehicles per day and obviously won't be replaced anytime soon.
[15:02:58] <drussell> Sucky situation.
[15:05:48] <janrinok> It is also a major East Coast route - any ideas of how far it is to the next bridge that can handle all of the traffic? (Sorry, I'm busy preparing stories.... I can look it up later)
[15:58:56] <drussell> Looks like the closest alternate route would be the The Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway which carries highway 895 under the river. It's only two lanes each way, though, so having to try to absorb most of the traffic from the failed bridge (two lanes each direction) is going to cause congestion. Both routes are also toll routes.
[16:00:41] <drussell> For an example, for someone usually going from Edgemere to Hawkins point along highway 695 across the failed bridge (about 8mi total) the detour up around via 895 is about 26mi and ~45 minutes vs 8mi and 13 mins over the bridge.
[16:00:52] <janrinok> thanks for that. I wonder if the congestion that results will spread throughout Baltimore? I expect truckers might want to look for an alternative but, hey, what do I know about their business...? (nothing!)
[16:01:51] <drussell> I would expect it to be quite congested everywhere until everyone adjusts their routes over time, finding more northerly/westerly routes as the failed bridge was the easternmost/southernmost crossing in the region.
[17:31:55] <progo> one of the preliminary sources I read said the ship was going 8 knots when it lost power. deep in a port on the way out. 50 feet of water, the current can't have been too heavy. was it moving at 8kn and if so, I wonder how it got to that speed
[17:35:24] <progo> I can't find the "8 knots" fact anywhere now. might have been wrong
[18:06:15] <Ingar> just saw a video of the bridge collapsing
[18:43:23] <Runaway1956> I'm going to start a conspiracy theory, that's two bridges in a single day!

[18:43:36] <systemd> ^ 03Tovorna ladja trčila in zrušila most v Baltimoru: poteka iskanje pogrešanih
[18:43:53] <Runaway1956> Can't find English source for that one.
[18:44:35] <janrinok> Runaway1956, sorry I've missed something - which is the second bridge?
[18:46:40] <Runaway1956> I can't read it, the headline says "A freighter boat goes down and knocks down a bridge in the Baltic Sea, trying to find where it went wrong."
[18:46:52] <janrinok> your link ^ is the Baltimore Bridge (baltimore most looks like serbian or croatian.
[18:47:25] <Runaway1956> OK, someone screwed up with the headline, misled me, and I can't read the article, lol
[18:47:52] <janrinok> I've worked out it is Slovenian
[18:48:33] <Runaway1956> Oh, that's dumb on my part, it does say Baltimore when I refresh the link, but the link leading me to the story still says "Baltic Sea". Go figure.
[18:48:38] <janrinok> start a conspiracy theory anyway.... :)
[18:48:52] <Runaway1956> It doesn't cost much, I'll get right on that!
[19:19:02] <chromas> Conspiracy time: the bridge was defaced by college activists who aimed to remove the legacy of the american national anthem
[23:10:57] <drussell> It looks like the Synergy Marine Group is actually separate from the South American conglomerate "Synergy Group" .. based in Singapore and managing 660 vessels?
[23:24:37] <chromas> So it's like HB Gary vs HB Gary Federal? :D
[23:51:36] <chromas> Also looks like that wasn't the ship's first crash
