[01:28:08] <chromas> it's the Current Year and LibreOffice still doesn't have table mode
[01:28:16] <chromas> in the spreadsheet
[01:30:45] <ted-ious> What is table mode?
[01:32:30] <chromas> in Excel you can "insert" a table which will put some buttmagic behind your selection. It manages formatting, formulas and adds little buttons on the header row for sorting and stuff
[01:33:41] <chromas> when you put in new rows it'll automatically put your formulas into them, if you have alternating row colors then they'll be set too
[01:39:42] <ted-ious> That sounds lovely and I've never used it and now I want to. :)
[01:41:01] <chromas> https://youtu.be
[01:41:17] <chromas> ^ You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky
[01:41:33] <chromas> he talks about it at the timestamp (37:40)
[01:41:59] <ted-ious> How did you find that??
[01:42:09] <ted-ious> Do you just have these things memorized?
[01:42:15] <chromas> yes
[01:42:51] <ted-ious> I almost believe you. :)
[01:42:51] <chromas> no I saw the video awhile back, then I went looking to see if libre or google docs has it and someone linked to that video when someone else asked what it was
[01:43:29] <chromas> then I had to go looking for it just now because I'd already closed the tab with the link :D
[01:58:06] <chromas> he also accidentally shows off the worst thing ever invented in spreadsheets, which is the cell pointer moving down when pressing Enter
[02:02:15] <ted-ious> Why is that bad?
[02:02:35] <chromas> If I want it to go down I'll press the down arrow
[02:03:35] <chromas> I remember ClarisWorks in the 90s had it right: numpad Enter moved the pointer down, alpha enter (or return in their nuttery language) didn't

[02:43:33] <ted-ious> I guess we all have our preferences. :)
[02:48:15] <chromas> some of us have correct preferences ;)
[03:39:45] <chromas> it does look like most of the features of Tables is in LibreOffice; you just have to go set each thing up separately. Maybe there's a script somewhere on the interwebz
[03:41:27] <chromas> autofilter, autoformat…I don't see one for auto-naming cells though
[03:42:17] <Bytram> https://www.technologyreview.com
[03:47:58] <ted-ious> Wow pivot tables are amazing.
[03:48:40] <ted-ious> I don't want to use windows but I almost wish I had excel now.
[03:48:59] <chromas> well the format tables is different from pivot tables
[03:49:08] <chromas> I think all the spreadsheet applications have pivot tables

[03:49:47] <chromas> but also you can use web excel in office 365.2425

[03:51:14] <ted-ious> That would just make me feel bad. :)
[03:52:56] <chromas> as long as you have a hotmail/windows/xbox live account you can use all their office stuff free as long (as you don't want the advanced/enterprisey features)
[03:53:20] <ted-ious> That's interesting.
[03:53:21] <chromas> unlike with google, nobody cared that MS uses one account for all their services
[03:53:33] <ted-ious> Can people still get a free hotmail account?
[03:54:28] <chromas> not sure about that specific domain, but their service is called outlook now (just like the email client)
[03:54:52] -!- inz [inz!~inz@wbi.fi] has joined #soylent
[03:55:40] <chromas> their spreadsheet is more superiorer than google's. I haven't looked at the other office stuff
[03:55:43] <ted-ious> Well I'm sure windows and xbox accounts cost money.
[03:55:59] <chromas> it's all the same account
[03:56:18] <chromas> when windows setup demands a login you can use your hotmail account
[03:56:28] <chromas> or use whatever latest trick to force an offline account
[03:56:55] <chromas> I also set up a box with Collabora, which is pretty much Libreoffice in a web browser
[03:57:22] <chromas> so it's like having java run on external box and then talking to it through the web. the worst of both worlds
[03:59:16] <ted-ious> Oh libreoffice is java?
[04:02:06] <chromas> at least part of it
[04:03:14] <chromas> what's weird is with office stuff, like photoshop, people forgot there's other stuff besides MS (and Adobe) and all the shitty open source programs
[04:08:22] <ted-ious> You mean most people could just use libreoffice and gimp if they only knew they existed?
[04:08:45] <ted-ious> I think libreoffice and openoffice still have lots of users.
[04:09:05] <ted-ious> Maybe my knowledge is out of date.
[04:09:13] <chromas> no I mean they forgot about Affinity Photo, Corel Office/Draw Suite and all the other (usually much cheaper) commerical software
[04:09:36] <chromas> the oddly named Ashampoo stuff
[04:10:54] <chromas> also gimp sucks; it was only like 12 years ago they finally implemented resizable brushes
[04:12:11] <chromas> they need moneys and devs injected into the project like Blender
[04:12:18] <chromas> or just use Krita

[05:26:57] <Runaway1956> No one can say that Israel sneakily built that tunnel since they invaded without being seen.
[05:27:42] <Runaway1956> However, sattelite and aerial photos DID SHOW Palestinians building those tunnels 30 years ago, before the hospital was even built.
