[07:10:58] <systemd> ^ 03Threads!
[08:27:09] <AlwaysNever> chromas: the second thing wrrong with mastodon is that is does not expose a gopher API by default
[08:29:14] <inz> Hmm, wonder what has killed my gopher server... I used to run one :)
[08:29:17] <fab23> AlwaysNever: are you also missing that on IRC? :)
[08:31:46] -!- ted-ious has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[09:00:43] <AlwaysNever> fab23: IRC I can already do from the terminal on old PCs, mastodon not so much, but gopher is doable
[09:01:03] <inz> There, now my gopherd is running again; now systemd will monitor it!
[09:01:35] <AlwaysNever> inz: your gopher hole is public? got an URL to share?
[09:01:50] <inz> gopher://inz.fi
[09:02:03] <inz> Nothing much there though
[09:03:17] <AlwaysNever> nice, gopher always gives me warm fuzzies
[09:03:56] <AlwaysNever> ChatGPT still has not colonized gpherspace....
[09:04:07] <inz> Challenge accepted!
[09:04:31] <AlwaysNever> :D

[13:22:38] <Bytram> of course I GTG shortly, oh well

[17:54:36] <Bytram> My PC is trying to load something and crashes a few seconds after I press the Enter key, and before it has completed .
[17:55:44] <Bytram> AlwaysNever: Oh, thanks! Will try it now...
[17:58:47] * Bytram opens a command prompt with "term" keyboard command...
[17:59:31] * janrinok thinks it has either killed Bytram's computer or he now has a working browser
[18:09:12] -!- Runaway1956 [Runaway1956!~Yet@the.abyss.stares.back] has joined #soylent
[18:10:25] <Bytram> That crashed my browser and (of course) I cannot copy/paste what I had on my screen. I think it helped. Trying another option...
[18:11:24] <Bytram> firefox --profilemanager --no-remote
[18:20:28] <Bytram> BEGIN

[18:21:35] <requerdanos> ouch
[18:23:07] <Bytram> yup. Still thinking, but open to suggestions!
[18:23:13] <requerdanos> According to the man page here locally, those options (-ProfileManager and -no-remote) are prefixed with one dash, not two. not sure it matters.
[18:24:10] <Bytram> Hmmm. Will try.
[18:27:35] <Bytram> According to: firefox --help | more
[18:28:11] <Bytram> those *are* valid options
[18:28:51] <requerdanos> true. I see that when doing the same.
[18:30:25] <requerdanos> is there perhaps an existing firefox session that you need to `kill`?
[18:32:33] <Bytram> I've lost track of how many "hard" reboots I've done... trying another just to be sure
[18:32:43] <Bytram> biab
[18:33:27] -!- fab23 has quit [Quit: macOS is user friendly. It is just picky about who his friends are.]
[18:33:35] <requerdanos> I have 119 days of uptime, in part because I hesitate to include hard reboot in my troubleshooting repertoire.
[18:33:59] -!- fab23 [fab23!fabian@ysxbxfyv.wenks.ch] has joined #soylent
[18:36:39] <Bytram> I'm back; will try again.
[18:36:52] <janrinok> Bytram, are you running out of memory? How many programs have you got running?
[18:37:58] <Bytram> First:
[18:38:05] <Bytram> BEGIN
[18:38:14] <Bytram> martyb@E6410-001:~$ firefox --profilemanager --no-remote

[18:38:18] <Bytram> END
[18:39:38] <janrinok> get into your home directory - you appear to be in /var/lib/ It will not start there for a normal users.
[18:39:59] <requerdanos> but "~"?
[18:40:39] <Bytram> 2nd.. same memory as before and on this last try, I did not even have Thunderbird loaded
[18:42:04] <Bytram> Hey!
[18:43:31] <Bytram> Just remembered that I had a "notice" that my brwser had an update availabe and that
[18:43:58] <janrinok> I have long ago binned the snapd version of firefox - it does not let me do what I want to do. I install it manually now.
[18:45:45] <Bytram> something (I don't remember the details) needed to be done in the next ~8 days
[18:46:06] <janrinok> how about an update?
[18:48:37] <janrinok> requerdanos, I wondering if he has a venv running?
[18:48:49] <janrinok> *I'm
[18:49:00] <Bytram> 1) How? 2) it may be trying right now. 3) as for snaps, I did not request them; they just seem to have been loaded in automatically
[18:49:03] <requerdanos> my snap knowledge is meager indeed
[18:50:27] <requerdanos> askubuntu seems to indicate that `sudo snap refresh` upgrades all snaps to latest versions. Not suggesting this nor contraindicating it, just putting it out there
[18:50:29] <janrinok> Ubuntu is moving everything to snaps. I have disabled snaps because of the problems that it was causing. I install firefox manually now. However, I am looking for a new OS... Ubuntu are making lots of changes that I do not like.
[18:50:41] <janrinok> requerdanos, that is correct
[18:50:46] <Bytram> I just know that snaps seem to be a misnomer
[18:51:23] <janrinok> snaps is just a form of container. It makes distribution easier but uses much more memory.
[18:52:36] <janrinok> The snaps version of Firefox will not let you save files where you want to save them, but puts them in secure containers so that other 'users' cannot see them. I am the only user, so that means diddly-squat to my security.
[18:53:07] <requerdanos> here in debian land, we settle for firefox-esr by default, which I accept and use.
[18:53:17] <janrinok> good move
[19:05:27] <Bytram> Don't know what I did, but I *just* got a browser window to appear
[19:06:10] <janrinok> do an update - I get the suspicion that you are NOT using Ubuntu MATE, but a different desktop.
[19:09:34] <Ingar> dump ubuntu, install arch
[19:10:05] <Ingar> it will solve all your issues and give you a whole bunch new ones!
[19:12:34] <Bytram> janrinok: "do an update" sounds easy... but how? what command (TLI5)
[19:13:03] <janrinok> sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
[19:13:41] <janrinok> I haven't got a clue where they are on your menus so just use the comment line and cut/paste ^
[19:14:52] <janrinok> *command line
[19:15:28] <Bytram> LOL! nod nod
[19:23:41] <Bytram> this is going to take a while :/
[19:24:47] <Bytram> But, it does seem to be making progress :^)
[19:27:00] <Bytram> Well, that's done... now to try it out.
[19:28:11] <Bytram> default-release
[19:30:14] <Bytram> YAY!!
[19:31:02] <Bytram> janrinok: requerdanos: thanks *SO* much for your help!!!
[19:31:12] <janrinok> np - you did all the work :)
[19:34:33] <Bytram> you're too modest!

[22:16:05] <Runaway1956> I've been loving DDG-browser on Androind and Mac - it's ready for Windows!
[22:21:24] <Runaway1956> It comes with Duck Player - you can choose to play Youtube in Duck Player, no ads!
[22:22:29] <requerdanos> I am surprised that privacy-centered DDG would want anyone to use telemetry-laden windows for anything, especially for browsing the web.
[22:47:10] <kolie> So I went down to visit the la mirada dc location.
[22:47:26] <kolie> I got a router installed and a switch. I hung two pdus.
[22:47:31] <kolie> And a shelf for working on.
[22:47:51] <kolie> There is an issue with the power there and the optics are 1310nm not 850nm as expected.
[22:48:34] <kolie> I got 1310nm optics coming and seeing what they can do abou tthe power.
[22:48:48] <kolie> Worst case I have another pdu I can swap in monday - and I can bring the proper optics then too.
