[01:54:43] <mechanicjay> Looking at getting rehash installed from scratch -- honestly haven't done this since the site launched.
[01:55:00] <mechanicjay> This is both way more organized and like...holy Makefile batman
[02:14:15] <mechanicjay> perl 5.20 won't build, glibc errors -- lets see what happend with current perl
[02:20:14] <mechanicjay> Like, I know I can build 5.36 as that's what the base gentoo system is running. The question is will mod_perl build against apache 2.2...
[03:10:15] <mechanicjay> an hour later and it's still buildling the environment -- working on the metric fuck ton of cpan modules now
[03:16:01] <mechanicjay> One of the issues I think with perl shit, and I run into with legacy code at work all the time, is the reliance on that afore mentioned metric fuckton of external modules to implement super basic functionality
[03:17:51] <mechanicjay> of course, this is not lmiited to perl -- python and nodejs suffer from this issue as well.
[03:21:51] <ted-ious> Don't those modules just supply the same capabilities as having a huge standard library?
[03:24:41] <mechanicjay> Yes, and it's irritating.
[03:24:53] <mechanicjay> and like wtf even is the Mojolicious library lol
[03:25:25] <ted-ious> I don't know but it sounds wonderful. :)
[03:25:59] <ted-ious> If the modules you're installing need to be compiled that means they're in c with perl bindings right?
[03:26:51] <mechanicjay> that sounds right, but I don't really know
[03:26:53] <mechanicjay> https://mojolicious.org
[03:26:53] <systemd> ^ 03Mojolicious - Perl real-time web framework
[03:27:13] <mechanicjay> perl --
[03:27:20] <mechanicjay> oh man, did we lose our bots
[03:27:22] <mechanicjay> perl--
[03:27:25] <mechanicjay> boo
[03:29:15] <kolie_> Mmmm delicious mojo
[03:33:05] <mechanicjay> well, the initial build is done, some errors, dinner time, will have to investigate later
[03:33:27] <mechanicjay> My hope is that things will run with mod_perl 2.0.12 adn perl 5.36
[03:34:20] <audioguy> Did you decide against pipecode?
[03:38:27] <audioguy> I bet TheMightyBuzzard has a full working environmen
[04:06:32] <mechanicjay> haven't decided anything at this point, just playing around with both.
[04:07:17] <mechanicjay> I'm still having wierd issues with pipedot that are kind of a pita to chase down, like invalid data types when trying to insert rows.
[04:11:05] <kolie_> We made slashdot twice in a.week.
[04:11:26] <kolie_> There's post saying it's all fake to drive traffic lol
[04:11:40] <kolie_> God I love reams of tinfoil

[05:06:20] <AzumaHazuki> kolie_, much as i appreciate your technical skills, ask yourself if it's worth keeping SN going
[05:06:35] <AzumaHazuki> its main problems aren't technical. it's that it has the same problem Musk-owned Twitter does
[05:17:33] <kolie_> Why are you here lol
[05:17:56] <kolie_> I've already answered this when I heard it was going offline.
[05:18:06] <kolie_> I know what it is to me and that's reason enough.
[05:18:27] <kolie_> If you don't like it fix it.
[05:18:32] <kolie_> I didn't like it in fixing it.
[05:18:44] <kolie_> Be the change you want.
[05:19:19] <kolie_> If you don't want SN then don't be around. What's the point really then if that's how you feel why you here?
[05:19:49] <kolie_> "is it worth keeping around" is that really what you just asked me.
[05:20:03] <kolie_> I made it clear how I feel and why I'm here.

[06:13:54] <kolie_> Vultures on a corpse? Who is dancing on NCs post and convincing someone trying to help to let the vultures pick away. You figure someone here would be interested in it's continued existence not committed to it's demise
[06:14:51] <kolie_> Some people have too much time on their hands I suppose. Life's too short to not surround your self with things you love and to separate those things that bring you down.
[09:15:22] <janrinok> kolie_, several of our 'community' have been calling for its demise for several years. They don't seem to be able to cope with just ignoring it like they do with millions of other sites. So perhaps we are doing something right if people can't stay away :)
[09:18:46] <janrinok> If somebody has left leaning political views they see us as an extreme right wing site, if they have right leaning views they see us as the opposite. In truth our community is as diverse as that in any western country.
[09:25:50] <janrinok> AzumaHazuki, I guess that you keep you laboratory/drug store in a neat and tidy fashion. One day, while you are not there, somebody comes in and takes everything off the shelves and out of the cupboards and places it all on the floor
[09:27:00] <janrinok> They then proceed to clean the shelves and cupboards and, having finished, they pick up their bucket and leave a note telling you that they are marvellous because they have cleaned your work space. Would you be happy?
[09:28:47] <janrinok> You come in to work and find everything still on the floor. Do you rush out to tell the customers/patients how clean your store room now is, or do you tell them that they cannot have their drugs because, well, you just can't find them?

[15:34:59] <kolie_> I know azumas long term comments about the state of the site.
[15:35:31] <kolie_> Burn it all down because nothing of value of left has been a common thread. But if that's all your going to comment I reiterate what's the point.
[15:36:03] <janrinok> I didn't doubt it - and I agree with your response
[15:37:41] <kolie_> I think your metaphor is likely apt as well. I'm just a shopkeeper with a camera and a concealed weapon. Not on my watch.
[15:41:23] <kolie_> If they thought about why they are here instead of taking the easy route and just drop something rotten in chat and disappearing I might respect that.
[15:45:45] <kolie_> I don't know. Vocal apathy is toxic doesn't matter your view point. I think it's obvious when as you've said this damage has taken please repeatedly that some might just feel it's hopeless and remain "stuck".
[15:46:42] <janrinok> there is always a way forward - sometimes it is easy, other times rather more difficult.
[15:48:23] <fab23> mechanicjay: maybe your MariaDB/MySQL is to new, and you may need to tweek some stuff there, had also some issues when I did upgrade to some 10.x MariaDB on my FreeBSD Servers until also the used Applications did adapt that.
[15:53:04] <fab23> mechanicjay: things like you could no longer insert NULL into a date/time field, had to be 0000-00-00 00:00:00
[16:04:08] <janrinok> that could break a lot of sql
[16:06:43] <fab23> it can be "fixed" with settings in sql_mode

[17:50:05] <rpnx> Hello, I would like to offer to build a new site using Go
[17:51:57] <rpnx> And possibly deal with administration too if you need that
[17:59:33] <janrinok> rpnx, I have just received your email and I am typing an acknowledgement. It is not me who will decide, of course, but I will ensure that those who need to see will do so. I very much appreciate your offer and your support to the site, both today and maybe 'tomorrow'.
[18:01:17] <rpnx> yeah, I can host as well, depending on the bandwidth.
[18:02:04] <rpnx> I don't actually know how much traffic soylentnews gets
[18:02:43] <janrinok> Much less than we used to but we can look at the details later.
[18:03:17] <janrinok> As long as I can talk about the bandwidth in 38 days time I will be very happy.
[18:05:25] <rpnx> Do you know ncommander's time zone?
[18:13:44] <janrinok> Eastern Time I think but he has unusual sleeping patterns so that might not be terribly useful. I also think he might have switched off for this weekend.
[18:18:08] * fab23 lives sometimes in GST/NST .oO( Geek Standard Time / Nerd Standard Time )
[18:18:52] <rpnx> ok
[18:19:59] <rpnx> I will get back to working on stuff but I'll check the follow up soon, rnicholl a/t protonmail.com if anyone else wants to get in contact.
