[07:21:07] <chromas> I plugged a monitor into the HDMI port on my motherboard and rebooted. It's using the AMD CPU integrated graphics for X, even for the monitor plugged into the graphics card somehow
[07:21:37] <chromas> Performance is pretty terrible, and watching vidyas in VLC stutters and is blocky
[07:22:10] <chromas> The CPU graphics is available for Blender to render, but it just crashes :D
[07:38:02] <janrinok> That is normal behaviour depending on your motherboard settings. The poor performance is possible due to have an incorrect setting - the GPU should be used for everything as usually it is the fastest at processing.
[07:38:41] <janrinok> Using my GPU for VLC has made it work much better than it did before.
[07:40:30] <janrinok> HDMI is almost a straight through connection so it should be resulting in any delay to the images from VLC - that is my understanding of it, at least.
[07:41:37] <janrinok> check your motherboard for IGP/PEG settings - on mine this requires a setting in 2 different menus. !!!
[07:42:37] <janrinok> Have you got dual monitor selected in the IGP motherboard setting?
[07:42:49] <chromas> I went into the firmware and set both the pcie graphics as default and enabled igpu multi-display
[07:43:15] <chromas> so now the discrete card is doing the work
[07:43:25] <janrinok> Mine doesn't like IGPU multi-display - it needed PEG
[07:43:36] <chromas> but still it's weird that I have one monitor on igpu and one on dgpu and they both work together
[07:44:00] <janrinok> I was having the same issues last night as I fixed my own motherboard problems
[07:45:05] <chromas> Watching usage on nvtop, gpu usage switches over when I move VLC from one screen to the other
[07:45:22] <chromas> no blockiness on either one now
[07:46:03] <chromas> I remember the olden days when you had to tell X every little thing; now it just automatically does whatever it wants
[07:47:35] <janrinok> OK, but I am not sure how is was meant to know which of two displays you _wanted_ it to use,
[07:49:00] <chromas> I want both since they're plugged in. I just find it weird that they're on two separate chips and both work together, although only the igpu was decoding video before I guess
[07:50:35] <chromas> SD knows to go to the real gpu though
[07:51:28] <chromas> Looks like all current gen AMD CPUs come with built-in graphics, but they're lamer than Intel graphics from 12 years ago
[07:53:31] <chromas> Originally my goal was to have a second display to watch the local security cams and....youtube videos...without it eating up the main gpu
[08:01:53] <janrinok> makes sense - and that is a good use of a second screen!
[08:02:11] <janrinok> AMD graphics are slowly falling behind and need to get their finger out
[08:17:53] <chromas> They've been behind. Now they're almost starting to pretend to catch up
[08:18:12] <chromas> Except in the CPU graphics, where even Matrox is ahead now
[08:18:44] <chromas> PC display locked up again. The box works but the displays are stuck
[08:19:02] <chromas> Python is stuck in disk sleep, so it's unkillable

[22:57:15] <chromas> I installed the firmware update that keeps AMD CPUs from burning up and now I can run 128GB of memory
