[06:22:15] -!- mode/#soylent [+v chromas] by Imogen
[06:25:42] <chromas> New modem, more than doubled download speed
[06:26:35] <chromas> Somehow, when plugging in the new one, Charter buttmagically new what account I have and the modem assigned to it, so I just had to put in the new mac and use it
[06:27:00] <chromas> I wonder if they're doing something other than a coax split off to several homes in the neighborhood now
[07:23:27] <fab23> chromas: cable modems also have a MAC on the HF side, if the new modem came from your ISP, then they did already add that to their system.
[07:25:08] <chromas> I got it from the internets
[07:25:31] <fab23> oh, then it really is strange
[07:26:21] <fab23> but on the other hand, I have no idea how cable stuff works in your area, could be different to what I am used to have
[07:27:36] <chromas> I asked everyone's favorite, chatgpt, which suggested they can tell based on the "signal strength and the location of the coaxial cable outlet that connects to your modem"
[07:27:49] <chromas> The answer wasn't actually in the link it provided though
[07:28:20] <fab23> magic of the cables :)
[07:28:21] <chromas> I suppose each house would have a slightly different signal strength since it's a different distance down the line
[07:28:47] <chromas> Maybe they throw the signal into some deeplearn buttmagic to fingerprint me
[07:29:32] <chromas> Had to change my router to use dhcpv6 to get ipv6 to work
[07:30:01] <chromas> in the past, when I had ipv6 running, it would work for a couple days, then the 6 would stop working, or at least the DNS part would
[07:30:02] <fab23> chromas: it could be, that at least the house could be identified, because there is some other element in the cable with identifier
[07:31:44] <fab23> at least from the appartment buildings I lived in, there usually is a repeater kind of thing in the building itself, if that fails, then no TV/Internet over the cable.
[07:32:24] <ted-ious> chromas: What version of doccis is the new one vs the old one?
[07:34:21] <chromas> new is 3.1
[07:34:47] <chromas> old is probably 3 or 3.1. It's hard to tell because it doesn't say, and search results show several different maximum speeds for it
[07:36:26] <chromas> they all say docsis 3 though
[07:37:41] <ted-ious> Yeah it's like usb3 vs usb3.1 or 3.2.
[07:38:03] <ted-ious> Those little decimal points make all the difference. :)
[07:39:09] <chromas> well cox says it can go to 50MB/s, other sites say 172. I was getting ~130
[07:39:50] <chromas> new modem gives me 366. still same shitty upload speed though
[07:40:16] <chromas> it's physically larger, so it doesn't fit into the stack o' NUCs and stuff
[07:41:57] <fab23> and it gets hotter then the old one :)
[07:44:47] <chromas> Gonna be roasting this summer
[07:45:10] <chromas> Need to make a water loop for the modem and router and stuff

[08:07:27] <chromas> Hm, Cloudflare doesn't get to complain since they already decided they could take down whatever sites they wanted
[08:15:07] <fab23> its more that some random judge anywhere in the workd can rules that Cloudflare has to block something
[09:36:23] <Ellenor> how dickerous
