[06:18:14] * chromas dials the police and sends them Bytram's way
[06:18:30] <chromas> fliptop: I think it goes under random

[08:38:20] <fab23> https://www.geekculture.com
[08:38:21] <systemd> ^ 03Google VS Bing's Bot
[09:34:21] <chromas> wat
[09:34:50] <chromas> I didn't know either one had a chatbot
[09:35:01] <chromas> but Bing is better than Google if you're looking for the pr0nz
[09:35:18] <chromas> but inferiorer for tech searches
[09:35:34] <inz> SEO has killed all search engines equally.
[09:36:55] <chromas> what a surprise
[09:37:25] <chromas> probably the only reason google took off was an algorithm that hadn't been SEOd yet and also a buttload of federal gibs
[09:39:29] <chromas> hm so now that I've said that I went to the bing homepage and now it wants me to ask a question so I guess there have been changes
[09:39:45] <chromas> But I wonder what would cause someone to go to a search engine's home page anyhow
[09:39:50] <inz> True. And there's constant complaining that search engines don't publicize details about their algos. There's a reason for that.
[09:40:13] <inz> No one does that. The location bar is the search engine.
[09:40:25] <chromas> Yeah. Where's the research into magically SEO-proof open algorithms?
[09:41:08] <chromas> I want my tax dollars to go there instead of being sent to Israel to bomb their neighbors
[09:41:38] <inz> I miss ye old times of manually curated link lists. Although, then SEO == $$$.
[09:42:07] <chromas> Maybe we need list-enhanced search
[09:42:24] <chromas> where muh AIs at
[09:43:14] <chromas> deeplearn chatgpt search on the blockchain
[09:43:23] <inz> Yeah, because AIs don't have biases that can be figured out by greedy bastards.
[09:45:00] <chromas> I want a deeplearn to decide which sites are bad and should be hidden from the results. That can't go wrong. A horde of RX4090s can't be wrong!
[09:45:48] <chromas> but seriously someone should delete sites like forumsee.com from the results
[09:50:50] <inz> and all the bazillion just-wikipedia-but-with-ads sites
[09:51:20] <chromas> I wonder if yacy is any good yet
[09:51:56] <chromas> where's my distributed search? open source is letting us down. probably being suppressed by Big Search like those electric cars
[09:52:06] <inz> not enough blockchain
[09:55:00] <chromas> good point
[09:55:14] <chromas> we should announce SoyCoin for april one
[09:55:28] <chromas> or SoiBuxx
[09:55:40] <fab23> SoyNFT :)
[09:57:43] <inz> You can then sell the article as an NFT to some fool you pity.
[09:58:28] <chromas> We can get both the suckers who believe in it and the ones who don't but will buy it ironically
[09:59:31] <inz> Or maybe donate it to the tallest olive worker, i.e. the highest pitter
[09:59:43] <chromas> inz++
[09:59:56] <inz> bots--
[09:59:59] <fab23> actually there is already a SoyNFT, the gold star besides your nick :)
[10:00:08] <chromas> This is why I'm against pun control laws
[10:00:45] <chromas> we need to make that gold star into an animated jif
[10:01:42] <fab23> animated emojies are still missing :)
[10:06:35] <inz> The zapf dingbats should be enough for everyone.
[13:13:43] <chromas> apparently, it's national pizza day
[13:14:50] <janrinok> and today is also the 1 day of the week that I do no cooking - I have a....... pizza!
[13:15:11] <chromas> pizza++
[13:15:36] <chromas> When I'm elected king, people who call pizzas pies will get the chair
[13:15:51] <janrinok> that bot appears to be AWOL still
[13:16:23] <chromas> yeah Deucalion was putting it off I think because it's a nighthorse to work on
[13:16:48] <janrinok> yes - he did mention that :)

[16:20:36] <Bytram> hmmm. My PC closes everything that's running and displays a login prompt every day or two when I start some programs... No clear pattern that I can tell (Ubuntu). I have a new, faster, bigger PC. It has a fresh Ubuntu install, but none of my old file, filters, settings, etc. I am wonderinng
[16:26:02] <Bytram> *wondering about my chances with copying my old PC's contents to a blanked-out version of my new PC, and updating *that* to the latest version of Ubuntu. Ideas welcome!
[16:26:37] <fab23> Bytram: maybe a setting somewhere with e.g. inactivity logout after x hours?
[16:28:43] <janrinok> The longest powerdown delay is usually 2 hours of inactivity or never. I haven't seen a 2 day one!
[16:29:53] <Bytram> sees to be ok when doing nothing...
[16:30:21] <janrinok> Bytram, you can restore your previous settings and data for some apps - HexChat, Thunderbird, browser links etc. Others will have to be reset from default.
[16:30:43] <janrinok> I can help you do this if you let me know when it is convenient for you.
[16:30:44] <fab23> Bytram: did you check uptime when you have the login screen? Could be that the box kind of crashs and reboots?
[16:32:28] <Bytram> no clear pattern (to me) as to what apps will shut things down, but us is such a pain I have not tried to isolate it yet.
[16:32:41] <janrinok> It does sound more like a crash that a shutdown setting. Have you done a recent update? If not, try doing one. You may find that a particular binary has been upgraded.
[16:33:26] <janrinok> sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
[16:34:32] <Bytram> ...
[16:35:23] <janrinok> just copy/paste into a terminal
[16:35:48] <Bytram> it all started happening a few months ago when I did an update. :(
[16:37:10] <Bytram> Sees like it didn't fully complete.
[16:37:19] <janrinok> it may have not completed correctly or it may have had another update
[16:37:26] <janrinok> gotcha

[16:52:00] <fliptop> janrinok: shoot, I searched the subs queue for 'NIST' before submitting the most recent story, not realizing upstart didn't have NIST in the title of the same story...sorry 'bout that
[16:56:38] <janrinok> not a problem :) but thanks for mentioning it
