[09:34:43] <bubba> I hear Twitter is going to ban SoylentNews because of its censorship policy. Is this true?
[09:35:50] <fab23> so den SN will also ban Twitter, problem solved

[10:18:03] <fab23> the Zeppelin factory is quite close at the south border of Germany at the Bodensee, there is even a ferry from the Switzerland side directly to Friedrichshafen
[10:21:30] <fab23> a few years ago some company (maybe Red Bull) was often flying with a Zeppelin around, of course for advertisment reason

[14:10:53] <janrinok> I am fortunate here - all street lighting etc goes off around 2230. Most homes have shutters and, as a result, there is very little light pollution until around 0600 the following morning. There is a little bit of light on the horizon from a larger city but it only affects viewing things for a degree or two in that direction.

[23:15:17] <Runaway1956> 100 valleys can lead down to a plain
[23:18:22] <FatPhil> but he says "coast", not "plain"!?!?!??
[23:18:45] <Runaway1956> If you've ever been to Virginia, you've stood on a coastal plain
[23:18:57] <Runaway1956> and, if you drove up to Roanoke, you drove up into a valley
[23:19:15] <Runaway1956> You islanders don't understand geography very well, do ya?

[23:25:46] <FatPhil> We have no proof CdeB had ever been to Virginia. So he's probably writing about the valleys not in Virginia.
[23:26:33] <Runaway1956> You reckon he has ever been to Ukraine and the surrounding region? Many valleys lead down from the mountains into Ukraine.
[23:27:18] <FatPhil> I have no evidence for that, so there's no reason to assume he has.
[23:27:23] <Runaway1956> Continents are kinda like that - mountain ranges have many valleys, and water flows through the valleys, in the high end, out the low end, onto the plains, coastal or otherwise
[23:27:36] <FatPhil> You do realise that Ireland isn't a continent, don't you?
[23:27:59] <Runaway1956> Ireland? I was speaking of places found on Earth.
[23:28:16] <Runaway1956> I don't know how things work in leprachan lands
[23:28:40] <Runaway1956> The wee folk have their own laws.
[23:28:53] <FatPhil> Yes, and I was speaking of lyrics written by Chris de Burgh
[23:29:14] <FatPhil> And therefore SE Ireland and SW England are the most relevant geographical references
[23:30:04] <Runaway1956> So, you expect me to find places in the isles where water flows into the high end of a valley, out the low end, onto the coast?
[23:30:14] <Runaway1956> That shouldn't be hard at all, at all.
[23:30:30] <Runaway1956> How does the Thames work, now?
[23:30:45] <Runaway1956> Or the Times?
[23:31:02] <FatPhil> the source of the thames is nearly in wales
[23:31:12] <Runaway1956> And?
[23:31:28] <Runaway1956> The source of the Sissimippi is nearly in Canada
[23:31:49] <FatPhil> I don't think it goes through much that can be called valleys
[23:32:02] <FatPhil> I used to live in "Thames Valley" region. There were no valleys there.
[23:32:20] <Runaway1956> HAH! Methinks that the term "valley" should be properly defined here.
[23:32:39] <Runaway1956> Rivers flow through valleys, they don't flow across the ridges, after all.

[23:34:29] <FatPhil> However, that just reinforces my point that you can't come *down* from the valleys.
[23:34:29] * Runaway1956 grins
[23:34:50] <FatPhil> the whole of "Thames Valley", and "Colne Valley" next to it, was flat
[23:35:07] <FatPhil> Valleys are the things between the hills
[23:35:08] <Runaway1956> "Through the Mississippi darkness, rolling down to the sea"
[23:35:10] <ted-ious> I think elon musk might sell you one.
[23:35:23] <ted-ious> Or is it bezos that's selling rides?
[23:35:25] <Runaway1956> If water flows, you can come down from there
[23:35:39] <FatPhil> Daffodils, for pity's sake - "That floats on high o'er vales and hills" - the vales weren't the hills
[23:36:19] <Runaway1956> Uh-huh - and if the water don't flow out the bottom of the vale, soon it will become a lake.
[23:36:22] <FatPhil> I think Musk has sold himself so many silly ideas that he's all out of anything to offer me right now.
[23:36:43] <Runaway1956> If I'm to continue arguing silly shite, I needs a cuppa
[23:36:52] <FatPhil> yes - that's where the "coast" he mentioned comes in handy.
[23:37:53] <Runaway1956> Well, all the water flows down into the sea, amirite?
[23:38:12] <Runaway1956> You ain't "down" until you're afloat on one of the seas
[23:38:14] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Ghost Particles Crashing Into Antarctica Reveal Unseen Heart of Nearby Galaxy - https://sylnt.us - straight-outta-Antarctica
[23:38:43] <Runaway1956> So, how many seas have you been afloat on?
[23:38:55] <Runaway1956> And, which was your favorite?
[23:39:22] * Runaway1956 remembers a sunset on the Sargasso Sea that has never been equaled anywhere
[23:39:25] <FatPhil> I know you've rejected learning English for 300+ years, but that doesn't mean we can't stop trying. I know your revenge is to push your language on that god-forsaken island off europe, and I think you've won that battle.
[23:40:11] <Runaway1956> American English is more like the King's English of 300 years ago, than modern UK English is
[23:40:14] <FatPhil> The cruise we did to Rhodes was probably one of my favourites. Fucking Colossus wasn't there to greet us. Bastard.
[23:41:03] <Runaway1956> I positively hate when icons wander off . . .
[23:46:15] <FatPhil> Both branches have evolved since we split - a lot. I do like some of the late-middle-Englishism/early-modern-Englishisms that you preserve that we don't.
[23:46:59] <FatPhil> "fall" is a perfectly good word for autumn
[23:47:35] <Runaway1956> But of course! That is when the leaves fall.
[23:49:57] <Runaway1956> You know, I just realized that Venado Tuerto is a long way from Ireland . . .
