[10:43:37] <c0lo> Hi jan.
[10:43:52] <janrinok> things good with you?
[10:43:56] <c0lo> How's going?
[10:44:09] <janrinok> everything's fine at this end
[10:44:50] <c0lo> Yeap, all good with me. Slight tendency to procrastination lately, but not at pathological level.
[10:45:25] <c0lo> How's the weather in France these days? Still warm?
[10:45:28] <janrinok> I think we all get that from time to time
[10:46:28] <janrinok> No, weather has broken with the arrival of autumn. It is not bad but most days are overcast with occasional showers. Nothing too dramatic though.
[10:47:12] <janrinok> Probably much nicer in the S of France - but I live at the top end
[10:48:26] <c0lo> A normal autumn, then. You have a wood heater or are you do you need to worry about gas this winter?
[10:48:46] <c0lo> s/are you//
[10:48:46] <SedBot> <c0lo> A normal autumn, then. You have a wood heater or do you need to worry about gas this winter?
[10:49:16] <janrinok> I have a wood burner but can fall back to electricity if I need to. I think that I have plenty of wood though.
[10:50:12] <janrinok> The wood is all from my own land and is from trees that have been blown down or just got too big for where they were.
[10:50:37] <janrinok> I plant a new tree for each one that I cut up.
[10:51:03] <c0lo> That's OK, then. Spring breaking here, had some scare about gas going short in winter (some political fuckery) but we got over. Not that we had frost.
[10:51:50] <janrinok> Energy prices are going up here but I am hoping that it will not affect me too much.
[10:52:19] <c0lo> I upgraded to a reverce cycle ducted last summer. Got 23C over winter with it going at 25% power.
[10:52:31] <c0lo> But...
[10:53:33] <c0lo> Gas+power before > now. Was using gas for heating and gas price exploded faster than electricity around here.
[10:54:10] <janrinok> I think that is the same throughout Europe too but hardly surprising.
[10:54:37] <janrinok> I'll have to look into reverse cycle ducting - I haven't a clue what that is.
[10:55:36] <c0lo> Compressor driven heat pump, reversible (heating or cooling).
[10:56:25] <c0lo> Large capacity, with multiple vents (12 mine) that are ducted to the unit.
[10:56:51] <janrinok> I don't think I need the cooling part, so probably not a cost effective option for me. This year was exceptionally warm but having a stone house kept the temperature at more comfortable levels indoors.
[10:58:00] <janrinok> About 25% of the houses around here have aircon, the rest don't seem to need it
[10:59:04] <c0lo> So, no torrid weather this summer at your place? I went back in EU in my holiday, AirBNB-ed in an old home with thick stone wall, but still needed A/C.
[10:59:16] <janrinok> But I have seen houses with aircon leaving windows and doors open so that the kids can have free access,
[11:00:11] <janrinok> It got hot but nothing that most people couldn't cope with. It was more of a problem in the bigger cities but rural areas tended to keep a breeze.
[11:01:11] <c0lo> If you need electric for heating, a heatpump offers (theoretically) a better efficiency. It depends on the temp differential, tho. In .au, with temps in the positive over winter, it makes sense.
[11:01:46] <janrinok> I suppose if you were much further S than I am then it would be more important. My BiL lives in Toulouse and I found it too hot to be comfortable there.
[11:02:52] <c0lo> Well, the temp it's what matters and they were having well over 30C for weeks.
[11:03:17] <c0lo> But I liked it. I actually needed it.
[11:04:13] <janrinok> definitely a good investment for you then. I am having some solar panels fitted at the end of this week which seem to make financial sense. I recoup their costs in about 8 years.
[11:04:57] <janrinok> Maybe a bit less but I am taking the pessimistic view for my calculations
[11:06:09] <janrinok> I'd better go and prepare a meal - enjoyed chatting with you. Thanks.
[11:06:45] <c0lo> I recouped mine a few years ago. Some subsidies worked for the first 3y, then it took another 2 to strike even. But there are (or were) some fuckeries in the power price at the time (distribution cost going through the roof) that made the break-even sooner.
[11:07:07] <c0lo> NP. Enjoy your meal. CU
[11:07:17] <janrinok> laters!

[11:50:22] <Runaway1956> I envy your cloud cover. The terrible heat is behind us, but it's still pretty hot, and DRY!!
[11:50:48] <Runaway1956> Sun shines brightly on the garden all day, everything wilts toward mid-afternoon.
[11:51:33] <Runaway1956> Nothing dying anymore, I can be thankful for that!
[11:51:57] <janrinok> Hi Runaway. My garden is looking much happier now although we will benefit from the occasional showers for a while yet. Water levels are still below normal
[11:52:30] <Runaway1956> Every morning, I look at the weather, no rain in the forecast
[11:52:51] <Runaway1956> I have found though,
[11:53:15] <Runaway1956> every place that I've put sawdust on the ground, the gruond beneath stays moist
[11:53:48] <Runaway1956> so I'm hauling tons (literally) in to spread around for mulch
[11:53:56] <janrinok> I suppose sawdust makes an acceptable mulch in small quantities, but too much and it will tie up the nitrogen in the soil
[11:53:59] <Runaway1956> accelerating my move to no-till
[11:54:34] <Runaway1956> What I'm using at the moment comes from the county fair, with lots of manure in it, to provide nitrogen
[11:54:56] <janrinok> The sawdust needs the nitrogen to rot itself before it becomes useful as a soil enhancer.
[11:55:08] <Runaway1956> when that's gone, I have a source for years old sawdust, not entirely composted, but well on it's way
[11:55:32] <janrinok> Usually takes a couple of years although once the sawdust is rotted it does release the nitrogen again
[11:55:40] <Runaway1956> One secret about sawdust is - if you till it into the ground, it's going to take the nitrogen, and quickly
[11:56:07] <Runaway1956> if it's lying on top as mulch, it pulls nitrogen from the atmosphere, instead of depleting ground nitrogen
[11:56:21] <Runaway1956> and it helps to plant legumes to provide nitrogen
[11:56:51] <janrinok> well good luck keeping the soil and sawdust separate when you are looking after your crops etc
[11:57:07] <janrinok> the legumes will help significantly
[11:57:35] <Runaway1956> I'm ordering a 50 pound bag of hairy vetch to help with that - supposed to plant it in November
[11:57:42] <janrinok> I compost sawdust with everything else but I do not use it directly as a mulch
[11:58:08] <Runaway1956> you might should google "back to eden gardening"
[11:58:29] <Runaway1956> There's an entire school of thought on the subject
[11:59:16] <Runaway1956> They use wood chips, where I use sawdust - planters and such work better in the finer particles
[11:59:34] <janrinok> thanks for the link, but I have already read both sides of the argument. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but if you are having to plant vetch to add nitrogen to counter the sawdust you are not gaining as much as you thought, surely?
[11:59:56] <Runaway1956> Well yes and no
[12:00:25] <Runaway1956> because it's so warm around here, bio-mass decomposes year round, never stops
[12:00:40] <Runaway1956> and the biomass tends to be washed out of th soil
[12:01:08] <Runaway1956> maintaining healthy soil requires the addition of biomass regularly
[12:01:29] <Runaway1956> the legumes add biomass, along with the decomposing wood fiber
[12:01:43] <janrinok> I've got several banks which separate areas of my garden and they are a good mixture of rotting wood etc covered in soil. Their composition changes dramatically over about 5 years and the plants love them.
[12:02:10] <Runaway1956> That's where I hope to be in two or three years
[12:03:05] <janrinok> I have a good harvest of fruit - particularly red grapes - this year but due to personal circumstances over the last 18 months I haven't done as much in the garden as I would have wanted by a long way.
[12:03:37] <Runaway1956> I gardened quite a lot, years ago, when the kids were little
[12:03:42] <janrinok> Perhaps next year.....
[12:03:55] <Runaway1956> then I had pretty good money, and little time, got away from it
[12:04:34] <Runaway1956> I have an eye toward the economy going to crap, so I want to build up some insurance that the family can feed itself, so I'm back at the gardening now
[12:04:41] <janrinok> Fortunately over recent years I have given veggies away to neighbours, and over the last year or so they have repaid me in kind. A nice friendly thing to do.
[12:04:55] <Runaway1956> Exactly!
[12:05:11] <Runaway1956> What goes around tends to come around
[12:05:55] <janrinok> So I will spend some time this winter preparing the ground for a restart next spring - providing no other setbacks come my way!
[12:06:14] <Runaway1956> That's the way to do it - ongoing maintenance

[12:07:02] <Runaway1956> thanks

[12:16:58] <janrinok> I'm sure that there are some who would love to see it as a journal.... And if it keeps them from the front pages I am perfectly happy with that.
