[07:33:04] * chromas chuckles at janrinok's kick attempt
[07:33:40] <janrinok> I have to try.... :)
[07:34:12] <chromas> You just weren't quite on the dot
[07:34:20] <chromas> also, don't need to op to use dot commands
[07:36:05] <chromas> Had to reboot my box because linux decided it couldn't use the usb serial port in my 3d printer anymore and it couldn't tell when it got unplugged
[07:36:29] <chromas> so it was just stuck permanently thinking /dev/ttyUSB0 was a thing even though it wasn't
[07:36:42] <chromas> linux--
[07:36:42] <Bender> karma - linux: -5
[07:36:45] <janrinok> that sounds a bit weird
[07:37:38] <chromas> the kernel module for it is apparently xhci_pci. doing the ol' rmmod just locks up the ssh terminal (but not the whole box)
[07:38:23] <janrinok> did the reboot solve the problem?
[07:38:26] <chromas> Good thing Linux is like Windows and I can just reboot
[07:41:31] <chromas> Reboot did fix it and the usb web cam works again. maybe the whole usb driver had died
[07:41:37] <chromas> though often that cam dies anyhow
[07:42:27] <chromas> for some reason I have to manually chown the rspamd socket for postfix to work
[07:42:55] <chromas> same problem I had before with opendmarc or whatever—the permissions in the config are ignored I guess
[07:44:47] <janrinok> I am now running a mix of Ubuntu (MATE) and Devuan boxes for a trial. I have not had any significant problems with either of them but the Devuan certainly starts up a little faster than the other.
[07:46:36] <chromas> Ubuntu likes to make things slower
[07:46:46] <janrinok> As for running, I still find the Ubuntu easier to manage but that might just be my current familiarity with it.
[07:47:13] <chromas> apt is more prettier than apt-[get|cache|whatever] but it takes forever to start up each time
[07:47:50] <janrinok> I can't say that I had noticed that particular problem - but I haven't been looking for it either
[07:48:07] <janrinok> afk 5
[07:50:33] <chromas> You just need to try harder
[07:55:42] <FatPhil> my devuan raspis and lenovos have been as solid as a rock.
[07:57:12] <FatPhil> Also running it on a repurposed media box as the main company web/mail server, and that's also as solid as a rock. I suspect that reached the 1000 day uptime earlier this month.
[07:59:05] <FatPhil> EEE's and MSI's - pffft, I ain't gonna blame devuan for their instability, almost every issue I've had is with intel's fucking gfx chipsets.
[07:59:43] <chromas> Send an alert when you reach 1024 days
[08:00:14] <FatPhil> having said that, I did get the MSI to lock up by playing an mp3 a few weeks back. then again, that's audio over hdmi, so still part of the gfx infra.
[08:03:54] <chromas> tsk tsk! should've played a vorbis
[08:04:14] <chromas> or I s'pose opus now

[08:13:04] <systemd> ^ 03Live is Life - Opus
[08:14:25] <FatPhil> and only once you've put yourself through the entirety of that.. https://www.youtube.com
[08:14:26] <systemd> ^ 03Leben Heisst Leben
[08:16:02] <FatPhil> off this album: https://en.wikipedia.org(album) - pretty good industrial album, IMHO, it's not a style I particularly like.
[08:16:03] <systemd> ^ 03Opus Dei (album) - Wikipedia
[08:16:52] <FatPhil> However, they pushed the brutalism to almost comic extremes, and that "purifies" the industrial sound somewhat, making it more amenable to my ears.
[08:18:43] <FatPhil> also listen to /Geburt einer Nation/ if you're either a Queen fan, or a Queen hater. Queen indifferenters may also like it.

[09:27:36] <systemd> ^ 03Leo Luoto - Villi yö ( https://www.youtube.com )
[09:28:05] <inz> Must say, the original usually makes me happy. It's the song that is played when Tappara scores.
[09:42:48] <FatPhil> I've probably heard that Luoto version from the ships' karaokes several times. And from the local karaoke bars.
[09:43:58] <FatPhil> it's even worse than Opus' version :p
[09:52:45] <inz> There's also this: https://youtu.be (NSFSanity). It has the name, but totally different song.

[10:00:25] <FatPhil> A very famous quote!
[10:02:36] <FatPhil> I like "it's 50/60"
[10:13:09] <inz> And "every chance is an opportunity"
[10:14:29] <FatPhil> he's not wrong
[10:15:19] <FatPhil> there was another one like "when you're alive is the the best time of your life"
[10:20:42] <inz> "Life is the best time of a human" would be the literal translation
[10:20:58] <inz> But that doesn't quite convey the meaning
[10:21:06] <inz> Or lack of meaning
[10:24:20] <inz> Also the "I don't recommend antabus to anyone. When you drink with it, you feel horrible." is one of those gems.
[10:25:33] <inz> He (or his ghost) should be the president of tautology club.
[10:28:29] <FatPhil> he should be president of Matti Nykanen's Tautology Club
[10:44:54] <FatPhil> I should have the teaspoon one on my gravestone :)
[11:05:29] <inz> The "when you party, you don't drink with a teaspoon"
[11:10:35] <FatPhil> that's the one
[11:33:17] <inz> FatPhil, you could also adapt the "Germany-Austria is my second home country" using "Finland-Estonia"
[11:35:26] <FatPhil> Yeah, that's quite fitting.

[14:06:09] <Runaway1956> macOS is annoying - I thought I knew how to install python, turns out I done it all wrong
[14:06:28] <Runaway1956> had to find "the RIGHT WAY to install python3"
[14:06:50] <Runaway1956> Homebrew . . . .
[14:11:27] <Runaway1956> and it still doesn't work as advertised. python --version gives me 'command not found'
[14:11:31] <Runaway1956> *sigh*
[14:16:19] <janrinok> in which case it is still not installed properly. Sorry I cannot help - I have no idea what MacOS does differently.
[14:17:00] <Runaway1956> It just messes with your head from the opposite side of Linux

[14:59:11] <FatPhil> Runaway1956: has it installed the binary as "python3" rather than "python". What's your $PATH?
[15:00:01] <FatPhil> WHen I last had OSX, nearly 2 decades ago, I remember having to add something to my path to puck up some 3rd party packages - that might be related.
[15:00:13] <janrinok> On linux it does install as python3 but there is also a link from 'python' to either python3 or python2 at your choice
[15:00:41] <janrinok> are you sure that you have installed python3 and not python?
[15:00:55] <janrinok> have you also tried to install python2?
[15:02:16] <janrinok> try python3, python2 and python in turn - one of the should work

[18:19:19] <Runaway1956> FatPhil - the guide said that homebrew would take care of almost everything, except path
[18:20:07] <Runaway1956> I edited ~/.profile as the guide said to do
[18:20:38] <Runaway1956> I'll probably not mess with it anymore today, will dive back into it tomorrow
[18:37:47] <FatPhil> First, work out what this command does, and once you're happy it's not evil, try it on your system:
[18:37:55] <FatPhil> eval "ls {$(echo $PATH | tr : ,)}* | grep python"
[18:38:43] <FatPhil> ooops, '
[18:38:56] <FatPhil> *' not needed, that was from an earlier attempt
[18:40:13] <FatPhil> but it's not important, ls dir is the same as ls dir/* except in weird cases you won't encounter
[18:43:17] <Runaway1956> Ahhhh, janrinok's idea paid off - doing python3 --version gives me 3.10.6
[18:43:45] <Runaway1956> python2 gives command not found
[18:44:25] <Runaway1956> and python gives command not found
[18:45:00] <Runaway1956> and, if I sit here 30 more seconds, I think my wife may come around the corner and hit me with something
[18:45:02] <Runaway1956> later
[18:46:24] <FatPhil> there's no good reason to have python2 anymore, it's a dead dialect, so you could create a symlink from 'python' to 'python3', so you only need to invoke it as 'python' in the future.

[22:29:24] <Runaway1956> Found the solution for python
[22:29:36] <Runaway1956> brew link python@3.10
[22:30:18] <Runaway1956> that overwrites other links and symlinks
[22:33:49] <Runaway1956> To be more precise, I stumbled over the solution, when I attempted to reinstall python3 - got a cute little message from the terminal asking if I wanted to link python to 3.1
[22:42:25] <FatPhil> that'd be the ideal solution, something built into the packaging tool.
