[00:56:29] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - AMD Ryzen PRO 6860Z Powered Lenovo Z13 Notebook With Microsoft Pluton Co-Processor Can't Boot Linux - https://sylnt.us - ought-to-give-Windows-the-boot
[00:57:16] <ted-ious> I just deleted the first 4 responses I had to that.
[00:57:28] <ted-ious> Which I guess is the internet equivalent of being speechless.
[00:58:16] <Runaway1956> It has a microsoft chip in it? Unfit for any use.
[00:58:55] <ted-ious> How does that thing even exist?
[01:08:36] <Runaway1956> Don't know why it hasn't ocurred to me before, but - --
[01:08:57] <Runaway1956> US says having Chinese electronics is a security hazard
[01:09:27] <Runaway1956> But, US electronics are not? A Microsoft chip isn't a security hazard? ROFLMAO
[01:09:49] <Runaway1956> It probably runs redundant telemetry
[01:10:17] <ted-ious> Chinese electronics are probably a wonderful source of campaign money so why not microsoft too?
[01:10:50] <Runaway1956> Embrace, extend, extinguish -

[02:45:49] <drussell> Certificate to be disabled by default. This means that for any of these Lenovo
[02:45:49] <drussell> platforms shipped with Windows preinstalled an extra step is needed to allow Linux to
[02:45:49] <drussell> boot with secure boot enabled."
[02:46:11] <drussell> To enable secure boot to work with Linux we need to enable the “Allow Microsoft 3rd
[02:46:11] <drussell> Party UEFI CA” option in the BIOS setup.
[02:46:44] <drussell> It looks like this might well actually be a non-story...

[09:03:40] <inz> perfectly understandable mistake
[09:04:52] <janrinok> lol
[09:06:18] <janrinok> From page 1 of their new book - "How to Make Friends And Win Over More Supporters." Now on sale in bookshops in Melborne and Adelaide.
[09:11:21] <opirisarchus> So if there is to be some vote by the staff on the janrinok proposal, can we normal soylentils at least get a roll call?
[09:13:31] <FatPhil> like thinking helsingborg is the swedish name for helsinki
[09:13:56] <inz> close enough for me
[09:14:04] <janrinok> I can't identify a normal soylentil with that username, nor do I get invited to board meetings.
[09:16:35] <janrinok> do you want names so that you can target them in future posts or just to ensure that everything is democratic and above board?
[09:16:55] <janrinok> If you don't trust the staff, why do you stay?
[09:21:29] <opirisarchus> If Soylentils do not trust you, janrinok, why do YOU stay? Fair question.
[09:22:37] <FatPhil> speaking for the downtrodden masses again?
[09:22:40] <janrinok> some soylentils? all soylentils? just you and your friends?
[09:23:08] <FatPhil> he has a whole drawer in his bedroom full of supporters
[09:23:56] <janrinok> I must get back to designing my new throne and planning the redecoration of SoylentMansion......
[09:24:57] <FatPhil> don't forget to ensure that the wings coming off the wings also have side wings.
[09:25:11] <janrinok> thanks - I had overlooked that!

[09:29:06] <FatPhil> weak troll is weak
[09:31:56] <opirisarchus> Community input is to be ignored, then?
[09:33:05] <janrinok> where did anyone say that then? There is a story off over 470 comments asking for community input. Even removing all your rubbish would still leave that as a good start for 36 hours.
[09:36:18] <janrinok> They are just not saying what you want them too
[09:37:04] <janrinok> to say, are they? Can't you stamp your "Authoritae" on them? https://soylentnews.org
[09:37:06] <systemd> ^ 03SoylentNews Comments | The BIG Discussion [* AC Friendly *] ( https://soylentnews.org )
[09:44:00] <opirisarchus> I have no input in the "big" discussion. What are you talking about? Again, who do you think you are talking with?
[09:45:02] <janrinok> If you have no input you presumably have no interest - after all, anyone can comment there. If you have to interest why should I tell you how the vote went, and who was present?
[09:46:02] <janrinok> Again, who do you think you are talking with - you are beginning to sound like my old headmaster. He was a dick too. Richard Ambrose, I think he was called.
[09:54:08] <opirisarchus> I noticed you have a problem with those with more education than you, a common flaw of military types. Your headmaster was a dick? Or did he just have to deal with a rather boneheaded student?
[10:03:30] <opirisarchus> T- four days, janrinok! Use your time wisely!
[10:04:03] <janrinok> No, he was called Richard.... But I told you that! Tell me again each anniversary so that I don't lose count please,
[10:05:29] <opirisarchus> Time is a fleeting thing, once the dementia starts to set in. I know about such things. Best approach is humility, but that comes hard to Boomers.
[10:07:43] <opirisarchus> And again, I am not who you think I am, I am not even who I think I am, let alone whoever FatPhil thinks anything is. Not to mention the hamsters. Oh, no, did they get doxxed, too>

[12:39:40] <drussell> Man, I always knew Ari was a bit of an ass-hat but he's clearly gone off the deep end, over a cliff, something... What a hoser.
[12:40:02] <drussell> Personally, I stand by what I've been advocating for for YEARS...
[12:40:28] <drussell> Leave AC posting enabled, but all spam comments get moved to a DUSTBIN spam thread section...
[12:41:25] <drussell> They're still THERE (unless it's legally dubious, doxing, whatever, then would be truly deleted I suppose) but just in the trash heap, not polluting actual stories.
[12:42:30] <drussell> Even Ari would likely tire of posting things if they're just being "hidden" from the stories, moved to the dustbin thread/story/area. Whatever you want to call it.
[12:43:22] <drussell> He could spam away to his hearts content but nobody would see it unless they're reading the trash folder/thread/whatever.
[12:44:17] <janrinok> Then we get accused of 'censorship' - which is another thing that we are reluctant to do. I have now discovered a reliable way to delete Spam - several spam posts by 'apk' over the last 24 hours have disappeared. But I do not wish to wield it as a big hammer.
[12:45:13] <janrinok> Setting up another area to put posts into is not straightforward. I could put them into a journal but then they would all be marked as my comments, and be just as easy to find.
[12:45:59] <janrinok> It would require a code change to have somewhere quiet where we could have the code transfer them, but manually moving them takes time and becomes something of a chore.
[12:47:36] <janrinok> I agree with the idea, but I cannot find an implementation that eases the current situation rather than increases the workload of the administration.
[12:50:23] <janrinok> I've also toyed with the idea of blocking ACs for an undisclosed but temporary period and then quietly re-enabling it. Wait for the abusers to catch up, and then rinse and repeat. However, it doesn't sound anything like an ideal solution but it is sort of a middle ground. I would prefer to keep the 'good' ACs but I have not got an idea how that can be achieved
[12:50:41] <FatPhil> having them closed by CSS, and marked SPAM works fine for me
[12:50:51] <FatPhil> you have to go out of your way to see them
[12:52:29] <janrinok> I think that might be what the 'delete' option actually does, but I am not sure. It is a bizarre implementation - it appears to 'crash' but hasn't really.... - but by knowing the correct incantation and sacrificing the appropriate wildlife seems to do the job.
[12:53:58] <janrinok> It only works with a very very high level of permissions - so high that just looking at it frightens me. I am sure that there is a nuclear option in there somewhere but I haven't found it. I hope that I don't.
[12:56:58] <janrinok> free speech, no censorship and free access is not an easy combination to manage.
[13:00:45] <janrinok> No, the delete option seems to reliably delete the Spam. We will have to use it with extreme care and discretion.
[13:01:55] <janrinok> Only to be used for genuine spam ala apk/APK and similar or doxxing material I would suggest.

[13:41:29] <FatPhil> what happened to the junk filter that used to just forbid posts that matched a pattern. "lameness", or something
[13:42:22] <janrinok> A good question. I'm not sure where in the code that resides or whether it was just something that TMB would 'insert' when he felt he needed it
[13:44:43] <inz> Buzz buzz buzz goes the ard. -- doesn't quite match the melody; we need another song from Richman
[13:45:00] <FatPhil> I once saw the page with the current blacklist, but no idea where that was
[13:45:07] <FatPhil> I guess I could sniff the codebase...
[13:47:04] <FatPhil> ugh, everything goes through a giant case/switch, which means I'll find 100 irrelevant callers...
