[07:57:01] <systemd> ^ 03Hertzbleed vulnerability steals data from AMD and Intel CPUs
[07:59:29] <chromas> "it’s highly unlikely that you will be the victim of Hertzbleed, even though you are likely exposed to it.
[07:59:29] <chromas> According to Intel, it takes anywhere between several hours to several days to steal a cryptographic key. If someone would still want to try, they might not even be able to, because it requires advanced high-resolution power monitoring capabilities that are difficult to replicate outside of a lab environment"
[07:59:58] <chromas> dangit I already lit my pitchfork and champed my tiki torch
[08:01:08] -!- drussell [drussell!~drussell@2604:3d08:a77f:prqu:zuql:xmlh:lxgz:hovg] has joined #soylent
[08:02:51] <drussell> FYI: Comment counts on the main page are not updating again...
[08:03:45] <drussell> Also, I can't seem to log in to irc using the web client, had to install HexChat. Perhaps it is trying to use IPv6 but that doesn't work?
[08:04:28] -!- norayr [norayr!376bc34bfc@37.252.sq.ypj] has joined #soylent
[08:04:30] <drussell> I see that HexChat logged me in via my IPv6 connection... I keep forgetting I have working IPv6 out here, I'm not used to that hahaha
[08:05:02] <drussell> My "normal" networks are v4 only still... :)
[08:06:46] -!- SoyCow4791 [SoyCow4791!~475ebf68@780-258-305-368.res.spectrum.com] has joined #soylent
[08:07:01] <SoyCow4791> web client's working for me
[08:07:21] <SoyCow4791> using ipv4 though
[08:08:00] <inz> working and IPv6 don't often fit in the same sentence
[08:08:08] * chromas wonders if slashd needs a smake
[08:08:29] <drussell> Try a smack first... ;)
[08:08:42] <inz> Well, it's still bleeding edge new technology, only 26 years old.
[08:08:48] <drussell> indeed
[08:08:50] <chromas> True. For me, ipv6 works a couple days, then just sort of stops, so I have it disabled
[08:09:13] <drussell> I expect that f I disabled it, webchat would work...
[08:09:33] <chromas> Where's my ipv8g?
[08:10:09] -!- SoyCow4791 has quit [Client Quit]
[08:10:13] <drussell> I'm just not at any of my normal BSD boxen where I normally would IRC from, I'm out at the lake with just an old Win7 laptop at the moment...
[08:10:57] <inz> I'm using IPv6 on all IRC networks, and it's been pretty stable with my current server provider.
[08:11:07] <drussell> but I keep forgetting that IPv6 actually works on this Shaw connection and I currently have it turned on... It does sometimes cause some "interesting" effects
[08:11:10] <inz> But on two previous ones, there were periodical problems
[08:11:55] <inz> I'm too cheap to pay for additional IPv4 addresses, so IPv6 is the way for vanity hosts :)
[08:11:56] <drussell> Ecen my main Telus fiber to my server room doesn't even offer IPv6 support yet...
[08:12:04] <chromas> Maybe soylent dns hasn't been updated for ipv6
[08:12:27] <drussell> AND I have to manually give them the MAC addresses for my static IPs, and they hve to DHCP refresh or they lose connectivity... So stupid...
[08:13:06] <drussell> At least on this Shaw connection, my static IPs are just there on the passthrough port, I can just ifconfig them like normal
[08:14:29] <drussell> The main page works via IPv6, but I expect there's some issue with the webchat connecting. I see the login page where you set your nick, hit connect, it loads the normal screen but pops up a box saying can't connect to server. Instantly...
[08:15:23] <chromas> Firefox does that sometimes for any connections for me. Does it do it a second time?
[08:15:52] <drussell> Yeah, I tried several times.
[08:16:14] <chromas> fpos
[08:16:27] <chromas> also
[08:16:27] <chromas> firefox--
[08:16:27] <Bender> karma - firefox: -30
[08:17:19] <inz> It's funny that web browser is the most important piece of software nowadays, and yet they all suck balls.
[08:17:33] <chromas> All both of them
[08:17:41] <inz> Yes.
[08:18:20] <chromas> Don't forget to allow scripts to run
[08:18:26] <chromas> for the webchat
[08:19:17] <drussell> It normally works fine, I'm sure it's just IPv6...
[08:20:36] <drussell> There must still be a decent console text-mode IRC client, isn't there? I can install that on the one BSD box out here and just leave it open... :) I just don't even have X installed on it since it's doing server duties
[08:21:00] <drussell> I suppose I could disable IPv6 for a moment just to prove that it works
[08:21:20] <chromas> weechat
[08:23:52] <drussell> cd /usr/ports/irc/weechat ; make
[08:23:55] <drussell> Invalid perl5 version 5.32
[08:23:56] <janrinok> chromas - our site's DNS can cope with IPv6 no problem.
[08:23:57] <drussell> FFS!
[08:24:50] <chromas> janrinok: just making sure. ya never know, you know? we had our certs on the edge of expiring and as far as I know, nobody actually ever announced that they were updated
[08:25:19] <drussell> Ooh, that reminds me, one of my main certs expires on the 16th... Need to renew that today! Thanks!
[08:25:26] * chromas pokes at the ladder of cards
[08:25:58] <janrinok> even rehash accepts it although doesn't keep any data on it as far as I can make out. The certs were update with 4 hours to spare :) - I didn't see anyone say that they had done the update but it was commented on by someone who also looks at our cert expiry dates.
[08:26:53] <drussell> I suppose my ports tree is way out of date on that machine anyway... I need to do a bunch of updating and configuring stuff on that boxen anyway... One of a gajillion things on the To-Do list...

[08:30:50] <chromas> 6
[08:31:07] <chromas> it's pretty ancient and a dead project. We were looking at replacements and got sidetracked with work and stuff
[08:32:19] -!- drussell has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[08:32:30] <chromas> There're also some that you can host yourself and point at any random irc server

[08:34:26] <chromas> Try thinking about baseball or grandma to slow things down
[08:34:32] <janrinok> drussell, try to last longer than 264 seconds this time.... :)
[08:34:47] <janrinok> does that work for IRC as well?
[08:34:47] <drussell> LOL, I was just testing it to see if it worked...
[08:35:07] <drussell> I'm back on with IPv6 enabled again...
[08:35:18] <drussell> Not in the webchat, though... Using HexChat
[08:35:50] <drussell> If the web client thingy doesn't understand IPv6, shouldn't it just connect using v4?
[08:36:06] <janrinok> I have had no problems with HexChat - other than the original configuration many moons ago.
[08:36:18] <drussell> It won't be looking up a v6 address and then not connecting, will it? That doesn't make sense
[08:37:21] <janrinok> I have problems getting IP4 as my providers entire network is IPv6 now - they do the translation to IPv4 as it leaves their network - or at least that is what it seems to be.
[08:38:07] <janrinok> my route traces appear interesting sometimes
[08:38:16] <drussell> I'll bet
[08:40:45] -!- lilitsyunetsi [lilitsyunetsi!cadbddc818@37.252.sq.ypj] has parted #soylent
[08:53:23] <drussell> I have not problem with HexChat either... It will be convenient to have installed on this machine anyway, but installing it was an extra step in my quick "just pop into IRC to mention the comment counts on the main page aren't updating again" mission... :)
[08:54:21] <chromas> We wouldn't be nerdy if we didn't make everything unnecessarily difficult ;)
[08:54:41] <chromas> Just install the cloud and let iGoog do all the work :)
[08:57:28] <drussell> Well, I have weechat installed on the server in the kitchen (you know, as you do... who doesn't have a server box in the kitchen?) so I'll probably log in on that and just leave it permanently open on vty7 or something :)
[08:58:20] <chromas> Need one in the bathroom
[08:58:35] <chromas> Seal it up, with fins on the outside and put it in the toilet tank
[08:58:48] <chromas> When it gets hot, you just flush to cool it down
[08:59:22] <drussell> Actually I was thinking of converting the cupboard in the bathroom (also has a door on the other side of the wall in the bedroom) into a server closet thingy
[08:59:51] <drussell> I'm thinking I'll put that stuff down in the crawl space to help with winter heating instead, though... :)
[09:00:49] <drussell> I'm moving some of my sercondary server stuff out here since I'm going to be spending more time out here from now on and leaving the power on, heat on etc. all year round now...
[09:01:24] <drussell> It's only a like 700 sq foot mobile home though, so very limited space until I can afford to build my garage/shop thingy eventually
[09:01:51] <chromas> Watch out for humidity in the bathroom though
[09:02:12] <chromas> Perhaps you can build a little closet on the roof
[09:02:54] <drussell> Humidity is an issue out here pretty much all year round... I'm used to the total dryness of Calgary, so I'm really going to have to watch for moisture, even just for storing stuff...
[09:03:09] <drussell> Perhaps I should rig some sort of dehumidifier...
[09:08:10] <drussell> I really need to save up my pennies and order up a mini-split heat pump/ac unit to install at some point this summer, I used just resistive for the past two winters, ain't doin' that again epecially with power prices going through the roof
[09:08:52] <drussell> The AC in the summer will be a bonus, but I mainly want it for the heat pump action in the winter!
[09:09:05] <chromas> Get yourself a pile of Waterseers
[09:09:13] <drussell> LOL
[09:09:30] <FatPhil> don't summon the thunderf00t!
[09:10:24] <drussell> Oh noes, chromas has summoned zee FatPhil! :)
[09:11:05] <FatPhil> I've always been here - since time immemorial.
[09:11:32] <FatPhil> since species immammalian
[09:11:43] <drussell> Did anyone ever go smack slashd around? Comment counts are still all 0
[09:12:28] <drussell> (Well, that's not true.. some are stuck at whatever they were at when it stopped updating, of course... to be pedantic)

[18:34:38] <drussell> I use my grandma's method, smack it down on a concrete floor to smash it open, drizzle and rub with a little olive oil, S&P, bake in oven then just eat it right out of the skin like it was a bowl... :) yummy

[20:38:55] <Runaway1956> drussell - I've never grown hubbards - I'm looking to order some seeds
[20:39:07] <Runaway1956> it's almost time to plant winter squash in this area
[20:39:36] <Runaway1956> Garden is ready for them, I just need to wait a couple more weeks to plant
[20:40:44] <Runaway1956> Does it matter which color? If color doesn't affect taste or anything, I'm kinda partial to the blues.
[20:44:59] <drussell> I tend to like the bluey-green ones best, although sometimes the orange ones seem just as tasty...
[20:45:18] <drussell> Depends more on the individual cultivar than the colour I think I've found
[20:45:22] <Runaway1956> I'm going to give them a try then
[20:46:05] <drussell> I've normally just got my seeds from particularly tasty ones I've bought from the grocery store... then I save the seeds again after I grow from them
[20:46:33] <Runaway1956> I got away from gardening for years, I don't have any seeds saved up
[20:46:36] <drussell> That started about 25 years ago when Crystal and I had a particularly tasty hubbard from Safeway...
[20:46:50] <drussell> It was soooo tasty that I went to the garbage and retrieved the seeds
[20:47:04] <drussell> Planted them, still use that feedstock to this day
[20:47:15] <Runaway1956> I can relate - I did exactly that with some bell pepper seeds
[20:47:23] <Runaway1956> very good tasting peppers.
[20:47:43] <drussell> I still have a little tupperware with some of the original seeds in it... Probably only 1 in 10 would be viable now but I could probably still grow a first-gen offspring from that tasty squash
[20:49:14] <drussell> I should dig those out and plant some before they become completely non-sprouty... that WAS like 25 years ago
[20:49:29] <drussell> I think I know where that tupperware thingy is
[20:49:31] <Runaway1956> Yeah, it's probably time, lol
[20:50:01] <drussell> indeed :)
[20:50:31] <Runaway1956> Wish you good luck - if they are that tasty, it's worth the effort!
[20:51:29] <drussell> We were eating it, going like "WOW! That's good!" ... SO good that I literally went to the garbage can and pulled the seeds out to dry 'em off and save them... THAT good... haha :)
[20:51:59] <drussell> I was halfway through my steak, marvelling at the taste of the squash...
[20:52:24] <drussell> Just had to pause and be like "I'm saving the seeds from this mofuggah!" :)
[20:58:52] <Runaway1956> Ebay buy it now, 15 seeds for 2.83 - if these are as good as you describe, I'll have a lot of seeds next year
[21:00:47] <drussell> Hubbard is by far my favorite variety of winter squash
