[00:58:56] <systemd> ^ 03Gun Meme of the Day: There's Enough Love To Go Around Edition - The Truth About Guns
[01:01:01] <AzumaHazuki> is runaway gunsturbating in public again?
[01:01:11] <Runaway1956> Whatever happened to that random number generator based on lightning strikes? Or, atmospheric noise, whatever. https://www.random.org
[01:01:13] <systemd> ^ 03RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service
[01:03:37] <requerdanos> yeah but quantum fluctuations are so random that Al Einstein said they amounted to God playing dice with the universe... So Quantum(tm) numbers are clearly worth more, right?
[01:04:08] <Runaway1956> Probably, but it depends on who is paying I think.
[01:04:48] <requerdanos> Myself, I pretty much go in for the free pseudorandom numbers. Quantum enough for me, and the price is right.
[01:07:53] <Runaway1956> Mmmm - their password generator seems outdated. https://www.random.org
[01:07:54] <systemd> ^ 03RANDOM.ORG - Password Generator
[01:08:22] <Runaway1956> maximum of 24 characters, and characters easily mistaken for other characters are not used
[01:09:15] <requerdanos> I prefer the easily-mistakens to be left out anyway; I also like them to start and end with a letter. Makes them easier to remember, hold in one's head, convey, etc.
[01:12:52] <Runaway1956> My bank and a few other places have 64 character passcodes, as fully randomized as I could make them - if I lose my pass minder, I'll just have to contact the bank, and reset it.
[01:13:25] <Runaway1956> Most places, I use much simpler, easier to remember passcodes.
[01:15:57] <requerdanos> my go-to password generator which I wrote in freebasic makes 8, 10, 12, and 16 character gibberish passwords. I don't think I have a 64 character pw anywhere
[01:16:49] <requerdanos> My bank may be the only thing I actually check every day to look for shenanigans, and I am quick to contact them if something looks off.
[01:17:09] <Runaway1956> I "borrowed" one. Of course, the borrowee may have recorded my tomfoolery . . .
[01:18:27] <requerdanos> then maybe once or twice a week I look in on a bank account for a nonprofit that I volunteer for, quick to contact them as well. recently had a mystery $1200 charge at walmart.com to report as fraud for that one.
[01:38:32] <Runaway1956> I just dumped a bank for being overzealous on the fraud detection.
[01:38:51] <Runaway1956> No overseas purchases, unless they can call you and verify it.
[01:39:00] <Runaway1956> No purchases over $500
[01:39:07] <Runaway1956> and the rules went on.
[01:39:26] <Runaway1956> That might not be a problem for some people, but I don't carry a cell phone - so -
[01:39:55] <Runaway1956> if I drive to Lubbock, stumble over something I just HAVE TO HAVE for $1100, I can't get it.
[01:41:14] <Runaway1956> Oh - two motor fuel purchases within a short period of time triggers fraud detection.
[01:41:49] <Runaway1956> So, I pull into a station, fill my gas tank with one card purchase, then try to fill the cans with diesel fuel, and the purchase won't go through.
[01:51:02] <requerdanos> Dear bank, you are the weakest link, goodbye

[06:57:20] * FatPhil drips parafin everywhere
[06:57:29] <FatPhil> 'gmornin' all
[07:00:22] <inz> Tere hommikust
[07:37:17] <FatPhil> got my first chore of the day done before even the first cup of coffee. Decided it was best to do it before dressing for obvious reasons - re-oiling the sauna benches.
[07:37:53] <FatPhil> got some new parafin that stinks :( the old pure clear harvia was much thicker and easier to handle, and smelt neutral.
[07:38:17] <FatPhil> this has some colour to it, I hope that doesn't mean our floor will be tinted every sauna session.
[07:41:13] <FatPhil> this new one's runnier, which I hope means will give deeper penetration, in which case, I'll top it up each day until it can take no more. Or until the smell of organic compounds becomes to carcinogenic.

[12:40:33] <janrinok> requerdanos, we published that story a week or two back :)
[12:40:57] <requerdanos> ah, good call. I have trouble keeping up with the zeitgeist.
[12:41:17] <FatPhil> damn, I misses that one :(
[12:41:34] <FatPhil> having said that, I've read almost no stories for a couple of weeks

[12:42:26] <systemd> ^ 03Time Might Not Exist, According to Physicists and Philosophers – But That's Okay - SoylentNews
[12:42:34] <requerdanos> I am going through The Teaching Company class of Physics for non-scientists, which covers some pretty heavy time concepts in special and general relativity. So I am prone to believe that time exists.
[12:43:00] <janrinok> or did it....?
[12:43:56] <requerdanos> yeah, I have no proof. The past doesn't exist any more, the future doesn't exist yet, and the present takes no time at all, and that's just from my frame of reference.
[12:44:21] * janrinok leaves the room because he is dizzy
[12:47:09] * FatPhil accellerates janrinok to light speed in a synchrotron, so he can quantum tunnel out of the room, alas infinitely dizzy.
[12:48:14] <janrinok> ... so no change for me there then!
