[06:44:18] <chromas> o was wrong I guess. suse only worked off the usb drive. I forgot it doesn't reboot after install—it just pivots over to the installation
[06:44:26] <chromas> once I boot from the ssd, suddenly it's errors all the way down
[07:10:29] <Runaway1956> You're probably holding it wrong.
[07:10:49] <chromas> it's not an appletosh
[07:11:26] <Runaway1956> Yeah, but, if it was ever in the same room with an apple device, it may have caught the worm
[07:11:37] <chromas> I probably need to blame the central banks like out EF imitator
[07:12:15] <Runaway1956> Won't boot from SSD - is it a SATA or PCIe drive?
[07:12:39] <chromas> pci/nvme
[07:12:50] <chromas> it usually boots, but it has all kind of errors
[07:13:03] <Runaway1956> OK - have you double checked mfr site for driver update?
[07:13:15] <chromas> like when the screen blanks because I haven't touched it in awhile, it just sorta locks up (but the mouse still works)
[07:13:37] <chromas> sudo likes to lock up too
[07:13:42] <chromas> but su works fine
[07:14:36] <chromas> now that I have suse installed, it won't start the X server
[07:15:08] <chromas> I went to that distro you suggested but it wanted schmeckels to get the download link
[07:15:29] <Runaway1956> Oh crap, I forgot that . . . sorry I didn't warn you
[07:15:56] <Runaway1956> I know there was a trick to download for free -
[07:15:57] <chromas> I wouldn't mind supporting them, but I just want free gibs—I mean just wanna try it out
[07:16:06] <Runaway1956> Yeah, I know
[07:16:34] <Runaway1956> I've supported them,
[07:17:16] <Runaway1956> I think if you click the download button, then fill in the donation amount with zero, you can download it
[07:17:29] <chromas> the ssd is a kingston so maybe that's the problem
[07:17:44] <chromas> hm, can I donate a negative amount? :D
[07:18:08] <Runaway1956> I didn't try that - it would be nice if they put $100 on my debit card!
[07:18:39] <Runaway1956> The main reason I suggested elive is, people brag on it running on almost any hardware
[07:18:52] <Runaway1956> but, it doesn't work on a MacBook
[07:19:14] <chromas> ah, like debian before they epsteined ian
[07:20:13] <chromas> might have to reinstall windows again
[07:20:18] * chromas boos to the hoos
[07:20:23] <Runaway1956> that would suck
[07:20:52] <chromas> yeah. it's worse than the holocaust but at least it runs on here
[07:20:56] <chromas> and israel ;)
[07:29:46] <tedious> Can you install grub on a small usb drive and boot from that instead of your ssd?
[07:34:39] <inz> chromas, does your hostname resolve to something?
[07:38:10] <chromas> I used the suse installation medium to boot linux off the ssd. same issues, but this time I get working mouse cursor over the boot status text
[07:38:29] <chromas> hostname is localhost.localdomain although /etc/hostname is empty
[07:38:46] <inz> do you have localhost.localdomain in /etc/hosts?
[07:38:53] <chromas> oh also I've watched dmesg in the past and never saw anything appear when stuff would crap out
[07:39:36] <chromas> yeah, 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain
[07:40:37] <chromas> so, so far, linux installers work from usb, but once installed like to bork in a random way each boot
[07:40:56] <chromas> and windows 10 works perfect (for windows, anyway)
[07:43:47] <chromas> oh yeah, I read about sudo being dumb about hostnames

[07:55:05] <tedious> That sounds suspicious to me.
[07:55:16] <tedious> Maybe you have defective hardware.
[07:56:10] <tedious> Can you boot into some live dvd that lets you load it into ram and try running that for a few hours?
[07:56:39] <tedious> You should be able to mount your ssd to /home or something like that.
[07:59:07] * chromas hunts for a livecd
[07:59:17] <chromas> the suse installation had been working until I folded the lid
[07:59:56] <chromas> I'm pretty sure it chroots into the installation instead of rebooting when it's done installing, so I think that's why it worked then

[19:59:03] <inz> FatPhil, I am, doubly so,; i've not heard of such aprotest
[20:18:16] <FatPhil> It might only be relevant in cities that have embassies/consulates
[20:32:41] <inz> now I can guess the rest

[22:04:42] <tedious> chromas: What did I do this time? :)
[22:05:07] <chromas> helped me figure out the ssd thing
[22:05:15] <tedious> Oh you fixed it?
[22:06:01] <chromas> yep. just popped in another ssd (micron) and it's working perfectly
[22:06:27] <tedious> Yay and boo!
[22:06:41] <chromas> yeah
[22:06:41] <chromas> kingston--
[22:06:41] <Bender> karma - kingston: -2
[22:06:46] <tedious> Who was the scoundrel?
[22:06:59] <chromas> Lenovo, for using kingston
[22:07:18] <tedious> That's too bad.
[22:07:28] <tedious> I'm sure I have kingston memory in a computer somewhere.
[22:07:54] <chromas> I ended up finding a post about a similar problem. the replies all said kingston sucks all the balls and does the ol' 'bate & switch with some of their stuff
[22:08:22] <chromas> seems like it works fine as long as I don't actually boot (linux) from it
[22:08:35] <chromas> so I'll keep it in to store all muh goat pr0nz
[22:12:15] <tedious> Is there a way to test a ssd for problems that doesn't write tons of data and wear out the flash cells?
[22:12:54] <tedious> Maybe you could write a program that writes a bunch of data and reads it back to make sure the checksums haven't changed.
[22:13:17] <chromas> I dunno. I didn't look into it much but I read something about timeouts
[22:13:52] <tedious> Oh that's not good.
[22:14:14] <tedious> Fast ssd's are not supposed to act like junky old hard drives.
[22:14:49] <chromas> I know the shitty ssd in my firewall has an issue like that; it causes the boot to take awhile because it can't do something or another, then it gives up and works fine. I haven't swapped it out because it doesn't boot very often so I don't care :D
[22:15:09] <chromas> but what's weird is they work fine in windows. maybe some proprietary driver bs?
[22:15:30] <tedious> Very suspicious.

[22:53:26] <SoyCow8846> So which is it? Is Russia winning or Losing?
[22:53:46] <Runaway1956> gugh - you wanna talk about Ukraine
[22:53:56] <SoyCow8846> Well, it ain
[22:54:29] <SoyCow8846> It ain't gonna cause people forget about the lockdowns, Rona, and their loss of livelihood while agents of the I.J.'s were destroying mom and pop businesses.
[22:54:54] <Runaway1956> My take is - Russia has won more than it expected, faster than it expected, and has opened a door to peace negotiations in Belarus already
