[05:27:46] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Want to be a Developer? These are the Coding Skills That Can Get You Hired - https://sylnt.us - Perl-didn't-get-a-mention
[08:51:51] <chromas> Nobody likes perl anymore, Bender. Plus I'm pretty sure it's just a Java front-end now
[08:57:07] <janrinok> I am happy to see it disappear - just so long as we can get new software for the site. I don't miss Algol, Fortran, or Coral either ;)
[09:05:33] <chromas> I miss Corel
[09:05:53] <chromas> WordPerfect and Quattro are way better than MS Office but everyone's forgotten about 'em
[09:09:20] <janrinok> no, not Corel, but Coral66 - https://en.wikipedia.org
[09:09:21] <systemd> ^ 03CORAL - Wikipedia
[09:14:31] * chromas Reveals Codes
[09:15:54] <janrinok> I remember using Corel Draw a long, long time ago
[09:17:31] <janrinok> Damn! It is still going with the latest release in 2021.
[09:18:50] <chromas> Too bad no Linux support
[09:19:01] <chromas> They had their own distro for awhile
[09:19:59] <janrinok> Thanks for reminding me - I was beginning to wonder if I had imagined that or whether the 2 companies were unconnected. Wasn't there a Corel Write or something similar?
[09:20:13] <janrinok> Corel Desk?
[09:20:33] <chromas> I don't remember those
[09:20:52] <janrinok> not sure that I do, just something echoing in my brain
[09:22:09] <chromas> Could be a thing. I don't know if they made any of their own software though. All the good stuff was bought, Microsoft-style
[09:22:58] <janrinok> Found it. Corel Office which contained Corel Write.
[09:23:48] <chromas> Remember in the early 2000's when it was the cool thing for companies to sell off all their software to focus on making a browser plugin nobody used?
[09:24:12] <janrinok> but like most Windows office software they all found they were simply trying to replicate MS Office for compatibility reasons
[09:24:58] <chromas> Macromedia, MetaCreations, probably others
[09:25:19] <chromas> wordperfect was always better than word
[09:26:01] <janrinok> I was just changing over to Linux about that time and I didn't use a browser to write documents that I can recall. But at that time Linux was a hard job to interface to various printers etc
[09:27:13] <chromas> printers--
[09:27:13] <Bender> karma - printers: -6
[09:27:27] <chromas> that should be under -9,000
[09:29:37] <janrinok> I recently had to install Windows 7 on a neighbours computer. (He had the CD). I had forgotten that you have to add each driver for the various motherboard functions and for each connecter. It didn't recognise the internet cable, nor the USB ports, or various other bits. Getting them was a bigger task than installing the OS
[09:30:17] <janrinok> Yet with linux it just 'works' as they say.
[09:31:44] <chromas> Would Linux just works if you had an old version though?
[09:32:18] <janrinok> I recall in the early 2000s that I managed to get linux working with an Epson LX-80 dot matrix printer. I was ever so pleased but it kept eating through my supply of fan-fold paper. Ah the memories...
[09:32:23] <chromas> Did you install the 12,000 updates?
[09:33:27] <janrinok> The updates were difficult. I found it difficult to find an MS link that was still serving up W7 updates.
[09:33:50] <chromas> I wonder if there's a torrent or something with all the updates
[09:33:57] <janrinok> and of course it wants to reboot itself every few minutes.
[09:34:30] <janrinok> My neighbour is now happy (?) so I won't go searching for a torrent until I have to.
[09:34:35] <inz> janrinok, and with windows, one needs to remember not to use the stupid driver installers, which come with tonload of crud, but use the system add device dialog, and manually try to locate the actual drivers on the media
[09:34:43] -!- cosurgi has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[09:35:04] <inz> I'm pretty sure that even with all the fighting, I use much less time getting hw to work with Linux than with Windows
[09:35:12] <chromas> oh yeah. sometimes you could find the .inf file and install it that way too
[09:35:27] <inz> (granted, haven't tried win for a decade and a half)
[09:35:30] <janrinok> I had to download the motherboard drivers from the manufacturers site - they were just drivers with no crap.
[09:35:40] <inz> lucky you
[09:35:43] <chromas> I don't believe you
[09:36:09] <janrinok> with no 'discernable' crap
[09:36:09] <inz> But if you didn't have working internet or usb, did you use floppies?
[09:36:36] <chromas> I found out some boards (Asus) install the drivers automatically from onboard flash
[09:37:19] <inz> scary
[09:37:28] <janrinok> I downloaded the USB driver to floppy disk (I still have some!) and then transferred the others via a USB key
[09:38:16] <janrinok> once I had an internet connection things got a lot easier
[09:39:06] <chromas> I wonder if it has Windows Terminal or whatever the serial terminal program was called
[09:39:43] <chromas> you could bust out the ol' null-modem cable and do some 115kbps file transfers
[09:39:54] <janrinok> I did toy with the idea of serial but as that also seemed to need a driver I couldn't see a gain.
[09:42:08] -!- cosurgi [cosurgi!~cosurgi@wonbavz4.bl.pg.gda.pl] has joined #soylent
[09:42:48] <janrinok> My neighbour also had an IOMega drive - I hadn't seen one of them for many years nor could I find drivers for it. He wasn't too disappointed because he claimed he 'didn't remember' what he had saved on it - which I took to be porn.
[09:43:07] cosurgi is now known as SoyGuest71833
[09:43:27] <chromas> Must not be very good porn if it wasn't disappointed
[09:44:20] <janrinok> He took the new well, is about the best I can say. Porn from that long back was probably not up to snuff unless it was his wife.....
[09:44:39] <chromas> or maybe it was snuff
[09:45:20] <chromas> or his goatse collection
[09:45:26] <janrinok> I did not ask too many questions - and I have since seen the members of his family alive
