[10:53:16] <aristarchus> How to get to CarnegieHall, or the Berlin equivalent? Practice, man, practice!
[10:53:31] <boru> Aye, true enough.
[10:53:44] <boru> Find the opportunity is not so easy at the moment.
[10:53:56] <boru> Especially with people at a similar level.
[10:54:31] <aristarchus> Communication is all about success, not finesse.
[10:54:58] <boru> Certainly, though I'd by far prefer to be able to communicate eloquently with natives.
[10:55:11] <boru> Out of respect, but also to express myself effectively.
[10:55:15] <aristarchus> Just look at how successful I am communicating with the Eds! Oh, maybe not a good example.
[10:55:37] <boru> You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and all that.
[10:56:03] <aristarchus> I find that French and Japanese really appreciate you just trying, unlike English and especially Americans.
[10:56:25] <boru> That is my experience, as well.
[10:56:50] <boru> Luxembourg and Switzerland, not so much. They'll just switch to another language, instead.
[10:56:53] <aristarchus> Auf Deutsch?
[10:57:21] <boru> It depends. Here in Bavaria, once you get outside the city, people really appreciate you being able to speak a bit of Bavarian.
[10:57:46] <aristarchus> Trying to make it easier on you, but you really need to tell them you need the exercise!
[10:57:53] <boru> But so far as Hochdeutsch is concerned, it's better to limp along and start with German once you're in, say, Munich.
[10:58:05] <boru> They're too nice for that, often.
[10:58:20] <boru> People at work won't correct me even after asking them to.
[10:58:38] <boru> And more often they'll just speak english, because that's practice for them as well.
[10:59:02] <boru> In the north in places like Berlin, people are a lot less friendly.
[10:59:34] <boru> They will tell you to your face, in German, that they won't want to speak to you because they consider it's a waste of time.
[10:59:41] <aristarchus> Competing practice needs, eh? Experience in Japan is that if you look like an English speaker, you will attract crowds of students wanting some practice.
[11:00:01] <boru> Makes sense. No better person to learn from than a native speaker.
[11:00:13] <aristarchus> Unless they are German!
[11:00:26] <boru> Heh, yes, somewhat.
[11:00:47] <boru> Where I live, most of the older people don't speak any english at all, but they strongly prefer Bavarian to German.
[11:01:12] <boru> Great to practice with, but limited use for interaction in German.
[11:01:26] <boru> And Bavarian is _very_ regional, even in Bavaria.
[11:01:34] <boru> Lots of little dialects.
[11:01:49] <aristarchus> Time for me to brush up on my Cantonese, to spoof FatPhil again with someone who is not aristarchus, And speaking of dialects, Chinese is the bomb.
[11:02:13] <boru> Fancy yourself as a bit of a polyglot, eh?
[11:02:18] <boru> I wish I had the time for it.
[11:02:25] <boru> Especially for some of the more Eastern languages.
[11:02:46] <aristarchus> Just an ancient Greek philosopher, who has been around a lot, really a lot.

[22:13:15] <AzumaHazuki> this is really promising. it turns CO2 going through it into SOLID CARBON. Which means this is the theoretical basis of the SimEarth Oxygenator
[22:15:35] <boru> Planting trees and restoring old growth forests is promising, and it scales far better, as well as featuring several other benefits for the environment.
[22:15:59] <boru> This is really all we need to do in order to sequester carbon.
[22:17:57] <boru> Boring, sure, but extremely effective.
[22:21:52] <tedious> I was curious so I looked into how much it costs to plant a tree and the prices were insane!
[22:22:12] <tedious> More or less than $100 each depending on region and labor costs.
[22:22:28] <boru> You can always just go out in Autumn and collect seeds like acorns and chestnuts.
[22:22:36] <boru> Native deciduous is best.
[22:22:44] <tedious> I just want to plant acorns or apple seeds or something and do it myself for super cheap.
[22:22:52] <boru> Now you're talking.
[22:23:07] <tedious> Also pine trees and whatever else is nice and bio-diverse.
[22:23:20] <tedious> But where can I get lots of seeds cheap?
[22:23:35] <boru> It takes a while to nurse saplings, but old growth usually takes care of pests and insects unless it's endemic.
[22:23:41] <boru> Go outside and collect them.
[22:23:43] <boru> They're free.
[22:24:22] <boru> You'll find hundreds if not thousands around big old trees in Autumn.
[22:24:41] <boru> You just need to beat the squirrels to them.
[22:25:17] <boru> Oak grows slowly, chestnuts less so. Ash grows very quickly.
[22:26:30] <boru> The chestnuts you don't plant, you can roast over a fire. They're delicious. Just don't eat horse chestnuts, as they'll give you some serious cramps in your stomach.
[22:27:39] <tedious> Should I recycle plastic cups and plant some seeds from the grocery store indoors now or just wait until spring and collect seeds myself?
[22:28:07] <boru> I'd just wait. You never know what you're getting in the seeds you buy from shops.
[22:28:19] <tedious> I guess if I want to do that I'll have to find some apples that aren't gross.
[22:28:42] <boru> The best thing for germinating seeds, ime, are ice cube trays. That'll get them started, then transplant them and nurse them to saplings, then plant them.
[22:29:04] <tedious> Oh neat idea.
[22:29:18] <tedious> How about egg cartons?
[22:29:21] <FatPhil> it's not sequestering carbon, it's buffering carbon!
[22:29:38] <boru> Eggs cartons are biodegradeable, better for compost.
[22:29:51] <tedious> It's turning carbon into something much nicer than oil. :)
[22:30:24] <tedious> I wonder if you can just plant the cardboard carton right in the dirt and the roots will grow through it?
[22:30:29] <boru> That carbon is mostly from algae. Mark my words that algal biofuel will be an intermediary to something better for freight engines. A good investment.
[22:30:39] <boru> And it's easy to grow, actually.
[22:30:45] <boru> And you can eat it.
[22:30:58] <boru> At the moment, it's the most long term sustainable space food.
[22:30:58] <tedious> Not very appetizing. :)
[22:31:09] <boru> Some strains aren't that bad.
[22:31:33] <boru> But algal biofuels are very, very promising.
[22:31:58] <boru> Avaiation is the next thing that will need a combustable fuel alternative.
[22:32:10] <boru> Ships and trains are mostly covered with biodiesel.
[22:32:42] <boru> Anyway, I had better get off to bed. I need to go to the lab tomorrow.
[22:32:48] <boru> Long story short: plant trees!
[22:32:50] * boru absconds.
[22:32:54] <FatPhil> can't disagree
[22:32:57] <FatPhil> cheeriebye
[22:33:03] <tedious> I think I'd rather stick to planting trees and shrubs and other nice things that I can enjoy without having to build an industrial plant. :)
