[00:08:43] <Bytram> I had an IBM 3090 prototype (one of 2 in the world, I think) all to myself that I was testing VM on. (It could support 1,000 concurrent users; in ~1985.) I ran a paging spider test I had. It copied a MVCL instruction (which straddled a page boundary) to a location 2 pages later (so it straddled yet another page boundary) and it called the just-copied instruction to do it again. The system had 32 MB of main memory and 256 MB of extended
[00:08:44] <Bytram> memory. I noticed the "INDICATE USER" command quickly got up to ~900 4 KB pages per second. Hmm. Let it run some more. 930. 950. 960. Waited. and waited. 990. 991. 992. ... 997. 998. 999. 000. Yup the field had been hardcoded to display at most 3 digits and was happy to overwrite whatever memory was "out there". So, AFAIK I was he first person in the world to attain that speed. =)

[03:48:48] <halibut> Bytram: Unlikely to be the problem, but might be worth checking: Try replacing your grep command options with -Iri (lower-case r). -R follows symbolic links, and there is a chance there is some sort of loop in there. I suspect that would result in a high load of either CPU or I/O, and probably would not loop forever, but just in case, it might help.
[03:49:15] <halibut> I do not know the directory you were searching, but /boot/boot is sometimes a symbolic link to /boot, creating a loop.
[03:49:52] <halibut> On my system, trying a grep -IRi blahblahblah /boot warns about a recursive diretory loop, so probably not your problem; just thought it might be worth trying.
[03:50:29] <halibut> Or, maybe there is a loop, but it is more complex and devious and less obvious, and so does not get caught.
[03:50:38] <halibut> Again, unlikely. Just a thought.

[17:49:39] <Runaway1956> FatPhil - tornadoes are far more common during the warm months - but they can happen any time at all. They are local events, after all, unlike hurricanes which are regional

[20:36:00] <FatPhil> Runaway1956: my undestanding is that tornadoes are most common in *warming* months, so spring, April/May
[20:41:43] <Runaway1956> Yes, FatPhil, that is true - "most common". That doesn't make them "uncommon" in other seasons though. It is only safe to say that they are "less common" in mid-winter.

[23:39:09] <Runaway1956> There are more than one way to measure the destructiveness or a tornado - most commonly accepted is by loss of life, and then dollar amount of costs
[23:39:55] <Runaway1956> For pure power, the most destructive I have ever seen the results was in Wheaton, Penna about 1984 or so
