[01:27:17] <mint> Hello!
[01:28:53] <halibut> FatPhil: Perhaps this is worth trying the next time you encounter a window without a bar you can click and drag to move: In some (probably not all) window managers, you can hold down the Alt/Meta key, and click and drag anywhere in a window to move it. I am curious if that works with your temporary Ubuntu installation.

[03:29:46] <halibut> Which is easier? Installing <insert distro here> GNU/Linux on a Mac, or installing MacOS on a non-Mac?
[03:35:40] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Why the Chip Shortage Drags On and On - https://sylnt.us
[03:44:02] <Runaway1956> Good question, halibut.
[03:44:35] <Runaway1956> If you're prepared, and you purchase your hardware for the purpose, installing MacOS on non-Mac hardware is actually pretty easy.
[03:45:15] <Runaway1956> On the other hand - installing MacOS on random hardware ain't easy at all at all.
[03:49:26] <halibut> IIRC, you installed MacOS in a VM (cannot remember if it was VirtualBox or VMWare). Did you have to set up the VM so it looked like it had Mac-supported hardware? Also, I though MacOS had a lot of checks to make sure it was running on Apple-approved hardware only. Did it complain about your setup?
[03:50:27] <Runaway1956> To get MacOS running in VMWare, you have to "hack" Vmware, which pushes some patches into the VMWare code
[03:51:06] <Runaway1956> Then you have to "hack" the individual machine, telling it which CPU to emulate, and what hardware it is running on.
[03:51:33] <Runaway1956> About 6 entries into the VM's registry - of course, that's because I run AMD hardware
[03:51:45] <Runaway1956> people running Intel don't need to do those
[03:51:50] <halibut> So you needed to emulate the CPU? I'll bet that ran slow.
[03:52:02] <Runaway1956> Well, mostly don't need to - some exceptions, from what I understand
[03:52:10] <Runaway1956> Yeah, it's slow
[03:52:28] <Runaway1956> But, I'm hooked on the challenge, lol
[03:52:48] <chromas> Hooked on MacOS worked for me!
[03:53:07] <Runaway1956> Nahhhh, not hooked on MacOS, it's the challenge
[03:53:22] <halibut> So ... MacOS hooked you?
[03:53:50] <Runaway1956> lol, I'm just a stubborn old man who is going to make stuff work, no matter what Apple says I can do
[03:55:24] <halibut> Permit me to twist your words a little: Apple is assimilating you by making it difficult to run their OS your way?
[03:55:55] <halibut> Probably not how they intended to assimilate, but I suppose Apple will take it as a bonus.
[03:56:13] <halibut> More seriously, I think it is pretty neat that you were able to do it at all.
[04:00:31] <halibut> How did you get the OS? Does Apple make it available for non-Macs? Did you take advantage of the install medium that came with a Mac? Did you use (c) Other?

[09:31:37] <FatPhil> Gravity without buoyancy gives us a top/bottom asymmetry
[09:32:51] <FatPhil> Combine the two, and you're going to evolve bilateral symmetry, unless you're very weird, or have no intention of moving.
[09:35:47] <FatPhil> (the counter-examples that move are almost all ones where the two asymmetry axes align, and therefore they leave 2 degrees of freedom unspecified, not 1.)

[09:45:04] <FatPhil> Yes, the protostomes and deuterostomes - when we became a tube.
[09:45:08] <FatPhil> nobody's denying that
[09:45:21] <FatPhil> That was when we underwent spontanious symmetry breaking
[09:45:30] <FatPhil> as I said way way way up there ^^^^
[09:46:57] <t3> I seem to have missed that part when switching back and forth
[09:49:00] <t3> I'm not trying to model real creatures, this is for a game - I want somewhat realistic but unpredictably alien monsters that fit together properly
[09:50:13] <FatPhil> A lot of it is guided by gravity, buoyancy, and the number of directions you want it to move in
[09:50:48] <FatPhil> look at the weirder things we have on planet earth, and almost nothing's "impossible", it's just that they have a very narrow niche.
[09:57:08] <t3> antisymmetry has led me to lots of good stuff though, I didn't know that was even a word
[09:59:04] <FatPhil> I don't think it's a biological term, but I'm a mathematician, and the most well known anti-symmetries we have (mouth/arse) were the result of symmetry-breaking, so it just seemed like an appropriate term.
[09:59:26] <FatPhil> A physicist or chemist may have said we're "polar".
[10:00:34] <FatPhil> but anyway, we gained directionality
[10:00:55] <FatPhil> However, in those days, we were buoyant.
[10:03:46] <FatPhil> (so the 'anti' is also akin to the concept of 'anti-parallel' lines)
[10:06:16] <FatPhil> what's the setting to stop firefox auto-suggesting my searches as I type?

[10:09:33] <FatPhil> there used to be a little icon to "add current page as a search engine" or something.
[10:10:01] <FatPhil> but that was in the search bar itself, and I don't have a search bar, only a url bar
[10:10:19] <chromas> the hybrid search/url bar has it

[12:44:16] <FatPhil> A year ago, I sent ~10000# in cheques to the canary wharf office, where my account is held. They got lost. After a month or so of them still not having been paid in, I cancelled them, and got them reissued, and sent them to a different branch, one local to the new fake UK address I was using (no foreign addresses allowed, because brexit).
[12:45:10] <FatPhil> They got paid in. All is good.
[12:45:44] <FatPhil> Now it seems, a year after they were first sent and lost, the useless cunts in canary wharf found those cheques, and tried to pay them in.
[12:46:26] <FatPhil> It briefly featured as a credit to my account. But then all 5 were rejected, and each one was a separate deduction on the statement.
[12:46:56] <FatPhil> And that's what got me in a panic - there was no way a "CHQ" could have caused money to come out of my account. Or so I thought.

[12:53:26] <FatPhil> 1999, that was, IIRC. Again, in the UK
[12:54:19] <inz> Yeah, that one was when we bought our house
[12:56:48] <inz> When we sold it, both parties used the same bank, so no need for such antiques
[13:01:01] <FatPhil> When I moved to Finland, we carried some of my glassware collection - very safely packed - on the plane with us. It ended up in Frankfurt instead, and arrived at HEL a few days later, with 10% of the box, and 20% of the glasses, missing. Airline could only compensate us up to #25. Despite it having obviously been eaten by a great white. And that #25 came as a cheque. Which my local KOP branch (nordea by
[13:01:07] <FatPhil> then?) had no idea how to handle.
[13:01:51] <FatPhil> I just said "deal with it, I'll pay the fees". In the end, as it was foreign currency, and a cheque, I ended up being credited ~70 FIM.
[13:02:46] <FatPhil> Lost ~60 quids worth of glassware. Some irreplaceable festival glasses.
[13:03:20] <FatPhil> The KOP staff who dealt with me didn't even know what a cheque was, she was young. She had to ask her manager what to do with it.
