[01:52:58] <tedious> Runaway1956: What is this about dna sequences?
[01:53:28] <tedious> Is this supposed to be a joke or serious?
[01:56:59] <tedious> Does this person not understand how copyright works and that everything ever written in a first world country is automatically copyrighted?
[01:58:13] <Runaway1956> tedious - the guy in the video took himself seriously -
[01:58:25] <Runaway1956> so, no, it isn't "supposed" to be a joke
[01:58:51] <Runaway1956> As I said, I found it interesting, not passing judgement on the accuracy of it.
[01:59:24] <Runaway1956> I don't even know what he means by "sequences" - I'd have to dive into the paper before I can hope to understand
[01:59:31] <Runaway1956> take it or leave it, lol
[02:01:00] <tedious> Or "different numbers of dna series".
[02:03:38] <Runaway1956> I'm always kinda amused when people say "we share 98% the same DNA"
[02:03:52] <Bytram> remember: confidence is no guarantee of competence
[02:03:54] <Runaway1956> Wonder what percent of DNA we share with fish, or reptiles?
[02:04:15] <tedious> I remember it being something lie 93% with earthworms.
[02:04:28] <tedious> I found the paper if you want to look it up.
[02:04:41] <Runaway1956> Really? Yeah, let me have it please
[02:05:04] <tedious> The doi is abs/10.1126/science.271.5254.1380.
[02:05:13] <Runaway1956> TYVM -
[02:07:50] <Runaway1956> abstract looks cool - I'll plug that into scihub later, see if I can get the whole paper
[02:08:10] <Runaway1956> right now, I need to tend to stuff . . .
[02:08:15] <tedious> The whole thing looks like it's 8 pages.
[02:08:37] <Runaway1956> yeah, the guy in the video was holding a thin little sheaf of papers
[02:11:17] <tedious> This just sounds like complete bs to me.
[02:11:24] <tedious> Really bad science.
[02:14:11] <tedious> A sample size of only 1800 for a genetics study sounds really small to me.
[02:15:27] <tedious> He says that premature babies never grow to the full height as babies that are born at full term which is just wrong.
[02:15:44] <tedious> Ok this is a waste of time.
[03:27:14] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Understanding Just How Big Solar Flares Can Get - https://sylnt.us - might-be-important
[04:16:12] <kyonko`> it's all a shtick where they force you and charge you to live
[04:16:23] <kyonko`> why are some meds cheaper than others
[04:16:55] <kyonko`> the meds used to deal with unwanted children are extremely expensive
[04:17:00] <kyonko`> psych meds

[06:19:07] <Runaway1956> Well, I have a macOS running in a virtual machine, after quite a number of attempts.
[06:19:29] <Runaway1956> Now that it's running, I can see that it's as bad as, or worse than, Windows in some ways.
[06:20:07] <Runaway1956> It's a real dog, slower than anything I've ever messed with.
[06:20:32] <Runaway1956> It doesn't want to do ANYTHING unless it's connected to the internet, and my internet is slow as hell.
[07:21:55] <Runaway1956> Well, Big Sur is improving. Slowly. From what I read, every new install and/or major upgrade of macOS is like that.
[07:22:15] <Runaway1956> It's running all kinds of crap in the background, while at the same time downloading updates.
[07:22:43] <Runaway1956> After a day or three of frantic make-work, it's supposed to stabilize.
[07:23:17] <Runaway1956> I guess I allow an extra two days for my slow internet.

[08:51:49] <Runaway1956> Way back, when Safari was distributed for Linux and for Windows, I thought it was a cool browser.
[08:52:55] <Runaway1956> Today, it's a steaming pile. I've seen more advertising tonight than I've seen in six months. Every web page is covered in the slime.
[09:06:00] <Subsentient> Runaway1956: Wait, Safari had a Linux build?
[09:18:21] <chromas> I remember Safari on Windows. It was slower than balls
[09:20:03] <chromas> Makes sense Safari would run on Linux since that's its heritage
[09:39:35] <Runaway1956> sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate
[09:40:05] <Runaway1956> Yah, I'm pretty sure it did Subsentient
[09:41:02] <Runaway1956> Anyway - leaving the system idle for a minute or two, and watching the system resources, the keyboard seemed to be actively soliciting someone to log in from a remote location
[09:41:19] <Runaway1956> using 30 to 50% of system resources!
[09:41:22] <Runaway1956> now that's crazy

[09:43:10] <systemd> ^ 03How to Install Safari on Linux - Make Tech Easier
[09:43:26] <Runaway1956> That pages says Safari never had an official Linux build
[09:44:22] <Runaway1956> I suppose that I must have installed it with Wine

[22:34:59] <Teckla> FatPhil: Ack, you've had bad luck with LED bulbs. Mine are apparently going to last forever.

[22:36:56] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - See Mercury Up Close as BepiColombo Space Mission Beams Back Sweet Image - https://sylnt.us - any-old-iron
[22:53:44] <Runaway1956> Two days ago, I never booted a macOS in my life. Today I are a macOS developer - all because I tried to use git.
[22:57:40] <chromas> to build ancient Safari?
[23:23:46] <Runaway1956> Nahhh, I was looking at Hexchat Azure - you don't have to pay for it in the app store if you compile it yourself
[23:24:33] <Runaway1956> Oh, I finally got to the root of the problem with macOS eating up resources and lagging like hell.
[23:25:20] <Runaway1956> IO stuff (mouse, etc) start fighting over CPU time, and turns into a huge race to gobble resources in the VM environment
[23:25:41] <Runaway1956> Reducing resources helps,
[23:25:58] <Runaway1956> the real solution is to set CPU affinity for the VM
[23:26:18] <chromas> I thought Azure was an MS thing
[23:26:40] <Runaway1956> Nope, Hexchat Azure is on mac
[23:27:00] <chromas> ah, I found it
[23:27:25] <chromas> no limechat?
[23:27:50] <Runaway1956> Yeah, they have limechat, but you can only get it through the Apple store - costs a few dollars.
[23:28:05] <Runaway1956> I'm not about to spend real money on a virtual machine, lol
[23:28:20] <Runaway1956> not even three dollars
[23:28:55] <Runaway1956> Oh yeah - Apple inc seems to be broken.
[23:29:17] <Runaway1956> Big Sur insists that it needs to be registered, so I try to register it with an Apple account
[23:29:29] <Runaway1956> my email is already associated with an account, which is locked
[23:29:43] <Runaway1956> I've tried three times to get into the account,
[23:29:53] <Runaway1956> but their email never arrives in my mailbox
[23:29:59] <Runaway1956> Broken.
[23:30:39] <Runaway1956> I must have really pissed them off, lol.
[23:40:57] <chromas> it says free
[23:41:49] <chromas> maybe it only works with an apple mail account
[23:50:22] <AzumaHazuki> i'm going to end up in overtime before this new place even gets me on payroll :v
[23:51:09] <Runaway1956> Nikolas Cruz still hasn't been tried for his murder of 17 students and teachers - but he's going to trial for assaulting a jail guard
[23:51:20] * AzumaHazuki has gone back to outpatient for the duration of this idiot pandemic, will probably be Canadian before she gets back inside a hospital
