[03:03:42] <tedious> chromas: Did you watch it?
[03:04:49] <tedious> I'm guessing nothing came of it or people would be freaking out.
[03:23:44] <FatPhil> it's a partisan issue - someone's bound to freak out about it.
[03:30:26] <tedious> Well that video is junk.
[03:30:40] <tedious> It cuts out multiple times in the first 15 minutes.
[03:47:10] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Explains Why Blue Origin’s Starship Lawsuit Makes no Sense - https://sylnt.us - bezos-lightyear-to-infinity-and-beyond
[04:24:19] <Runaway1956> A three hour press conference Chromas? Where's the TLDR version?
[04:33:05] <Runaway1956> 17,322 duplicate votes
[04:36:26] <Runaway1956> I think that was enough votes to swing the election in three or more states - not going back to find all the numbers again
[04:37:24] <Runaway1956> Nor am I watching to see in which precincts those votes were cast - but all they had to do was win two, three, or four precincts to carry the state
[05:35:13] <Runaway1956> I see that someone fixed a spam mod before I got around to reporting it. https://soylentnews.org
[05:35:14] <systemd> ^ 03SoylentNews Comments | SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Explains Why Blue Origin’s Starship Lawsuit Makes no Sense ( https://soylentnews.org )
[05:35:16] <Runaway1956> good job
[07:37:31] <chromas> the tl;dw I guess is shared accounts, unpatched Windows, files apparently relating to other states, multiple OS installations...just ripe for muh Russian interference
[07:48:21] -!- AzumaHazuki has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[08:27:43] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Tech Giants Quietly Buy Up Dozens of Companies a Year. Regulators are Finally Noticing. - https://sylnt.us
[10:22:39] <Runaway1956> Awesome. I converted a VM from Virtualbox to VMWare. Create a new VMDK drive, use it to make a complete backup of the VBox machine. Create a new VMware machine, plug in an install media, and follow the prompts to restore your machine.
[10:23:08] <chromas> I'm surprised they don't play each other's formats
[10:23:32] <Runaway1956> I tried, VMWare kinda barfed on VBox machine.
[10:24:25] <Runaway1956> VMWare seems to work better with IOMMU and better at managing memory.
[10:25:16] <Runaway1956> I discovered that ballooning you mentioned in VBox - it's rather unimpressive after seeing how VMWare works.
[10:26:20] <chromas> That's probably true for most of vbox :)
[10:26:42] <Runaway1956> Another thing - I ran VBox and VMWare side-by-side before enabling IOMMU - it works.
[10:27:01] <Runaway1956> Doing it with IOMMU enabled not so well - VBox crashes repeatedly.
[10:27:30] <Runaway1956> Seems like VMWare crowds VBox out of the IO loop
[10:32:24] <Runaway1956> Moving forward, I think I'll convert another machine, then delete all those VBox test machines to recover space
[10:32:29] <Runaway1956> then uninstall VBox
[10:33:05] <chromas> The Microsoft one's pretty decent on Windows, but it doesn't support sound or graphics acceleration
[10:33:22] <chromas> and when I tried it, I couldn't get vbox to work with the ms one enabled
[10:33:57] <Runaway1956> Yeah, most guides warn you not to run two different VM solutions on the same host machine simultaneously
[10:34:09] <Runaway1956> but I had to discover that for myself, lol
[10:35:35] <Runaway1956> On another front . . . I'm considering a new Ryzen 9 machine for Dear Wife, and applying all I've learned about Win10 and Win11 to it.
[10:36:19] <Runaway1956> Start with either Pro or Enterprise, use DISM to get rid of all the cruft and it makes a fairly decent OS
[10:36:38] <Runaway1956> Can't mistake it for Win7 really, but it's almost as nice.
[10:53:15] <chromas> Does it get a decent menu or do you need to install open shell or start11?
[10:55:25] <chromas> The Ryzens are pretty nice. I can render 3d shat in Blender faster on my cpu than the gtx 960 now
[10:55:44] <chromas> The current gens are supposed to be around 20% more fasterer
[11:32:06] <Runaway1956> Win10 and 11 menus are pretty crappy - you'll want to install one of the above
[11:32:52] <Runaway1956> I've concentrated on stripping all the bloat and crapware out of the OS, haven't concentrated much on customizing it
[11:33:37] <Runaway1956> I can't imagine why anyone would ever want Microsoft to maintain an advertising channel directly onto the desktop
[11:33:48] <Runaway1956> or why they want to send in telemetry on everything
[11:34:14] <Runaway1956> For that matter, by default, you can't even sign into the desktop unless you have a Microsoft account

[18:51:43] <Bytram> chromas: Ooops... My bad! I had tried to block jman's hourly change nick from SoyGuesnnnnn to jman -- wait a minute -- change nick from jman to SoyGuestmmmmm. The pattern used by the command when I tried to ".kickban jman: when he popped in did not only block jman. :(
[18:52:23] <Bytram> chromas++ Thanks for clearing the other bans, too.

[20:12:58] <progo> I'm window shopping the Framework laptop. again. https://frame.work - last line on the page: WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Nickel (Metallic), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, and Bisphenol A (BPA), which is known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov
[20:12:59] <systemd> ^ 03Framework Laptop
[20:13:01] <progo> oh California…
[20:13:20] <progo> please do not eat laptop parts; you might get caner or cause birth defects
[20:13:38] <progo> *cancer
[20:14:22] <progo> my preferred configuration would cost about $1030. I'm close to pulling the trigger. my money will be worth comparatively less against commodities if I wait the usual year it takes me to buy a computer
[20:15:30] <progo> for those who don't know: Framework is trying to popularize fully repairable laptops designed to be easy to disassemble and swap parts. (clear labels inside, all one screwdriver head type, comes with screwdriver, no glue holding display in chassis, etc.)
[20:16:09] <progo> their products are more expensive now because they're not built to be tossed away and replaced in 18 months, and because they're a new company with very little cash
