[07:41:39] <FatPhil> still woodchip the oligarchy though

[11:09:32] * Ingar has G-keys!
[11:10:03] <Ingar> it's like having an amplifier that goes up tho 12
[11:26:20] <FatPhil> 640 K-keys should be enough for anybody

[14:46:52] <janrinok> beers-per-minute, even for you that sounds a bit excessive!

[15:25:19] <Ingar> you summoned the mistress of beat
[15:25:27] <AzumaHazuki> the what now?
[15:26:06] <requerdanos> there was some jenius-level talk about how bpm is beers per minute
[15:26:46] <AzumaHazuki> ah. as a teetotaler i'm at 0 bpm
[15:27:28] <Ingar> hence you couldn't have been the mistress of beer
[15:40:24] <requerdanos> I dunno, I could see you serving the beer as perhaps a sarcastic hostess
[15:44:36] <AzumaHazuki> i'm way way too shy for any sort of job like that
[15:45:04] <AzumaHazuki> if the demand in the IV room weren't so insane during covid spikes I could spend hours at a time in there with the radio on just making medicine
[16:23:54] -!- AzumaHazuki has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[16:50:32] <FatPhil> 640 beers per month is pretty darn excessive too. I think I entered 400 ratings in a month once, but that was backlog from a touring holiday that had at least 50 pubs in it.
[17:22:37] <progo> O_O
[17:22:48] <progo> I've never had more than 12 beers in a month
[18:14:44] <Runaway1956> Deepin OS, now with Gain of Function, from Wuhan Technology Institute
[18:15:33] <Runaway1956> I'm giving some semi-serious thought to a Linux laptop
[18:15:54] <Runaway1956> Speccing a good laptop, you end up with prices comparable to Mac Pro
[18:16:45] <Runaway1956> Anyway - it appears that all Linux Laptop retailers use systemd operating systems
[18:17:15] <progo> my linux personal machines are: a 5 year old $240 netbook (HP Stream), and a Raspberry Pi 4
[18:17:41] <progo> they work fine. don't even think about running Windows on a Stream (it comes with Windows) unless it's got 64GB or more of storage
[18:18:13] <Runaway1956> I can't imagine a daily driver with less than 500GB hard drive
[18:18:22] <progo> that's all my personal computers, unless you count my very expensive Windows laptop owned by my company
[18:18:36] <Runaway1956> The last time I used a 240GB drive, I ran out of space quickly

[18:20:09] <Runaway1956> Everyone needs a few TB on their main machine, LOL
[18:20:24] <progo> I've got a home server for that, but it's currently broken
[18:20:53] <progo> my hub for low-capacity storage (diaries, etc.) is a prgmr.com VM
[18:21:59] * Runaway1956 should probably think about what's for dinner . . . it's kinda "my turn"
[18:22:13] <progo> chocolate cake
[19:00:46] <Runaway1956> Lazy spaghetti - opened two cans of store bought spaghetti sauce, added a buttload of spices, some mushrooms, and the meatballs

[20:08:41] <FatPhil> Runaway1956: I recommend Thinkpads for linux. Just make sure you don't get the touchpad-only ones. We have 3 now (x240 and x250 for work, and an x250 for shared home use)
[20:09:39] <FatPhil> we like the compact ones, as you can tell, docking stations and external monitors work fine, and you can't fake portability.
[20:15:08] <inz> My work laptop is a P52s (I like it big), works pretty well (except the built-in webcam, which is crap anyway)
[20:17:15] <inz> The first thinkpad I got had a shitty display, but the 2 after that have been great
[20:29:37] <Runaway1956> FatPhil - Thinkpads rank pretty high in my search today - only problem is, they come with Ubuntu.
[20:30:02] <Runaway1956> I'm thinking I might get the laptop with two drives, and install something like MX Linux on the second drive
[20:30:35] <Runaway1956> Price-wise, Thinkpads are upper middleweight

[20:53:32] <FatPhil> our x250s were both refurbs, but in perfect condition. My battery's not so hot (mine's the x240) but it's obviously the oldest. Devuan installed on them all like a charm. However, I don't use any fancy features, so I can't vouch for all of the hardware working perfectly. E.g. my webcam has a piece of tape over it, which has been there for 4 years.
[21:28:54] <chromas> You should try accessing the cam. For all you know, the tape doesn't even work. Gotta test it like backups
[22:33:39] <AzumaHazuki> argh. i finally finished building that little desk i started a few days ago, and it's too short >< the surface is about 29 and a half inches off the floor. i'm juuuuust a bit too tall
[22:35:04] <chromas> How much too short? You can use risers
[22:35:25] <chromas> https://i5.walmartimages.com
[22:45:03] <progo> AzumaHazuki: my 28 inch desktop display has a stand half on my desk and half on a pile consisting of [display's shipping box; random bits of cardboard taped together; an antacid bottle]
[22:45:21] <progo> that was a temporary solution for "desk isn't deep enough", in September :^)
[22:45:44] <progo> I found a standard display stand that rests on the floor, in the trash. haven't tried to install it yet
[22:45:55] <AzumaHazuki> i may just get some 1-2" furniture elevators or something...daaaa, gaaav-no
[22:46:10] <progo> do that, definitely
