[01:45:33] <halibut> Since the g/f was in on it, I can offer Bytram this advice: Ask not for whom the Belle trolls ...

[01:50:08] <FatPhil> Righty-ho, it's bedtime for those of us who live in a civilised timezone, so ~gnight all

[02:03:58] <halibut> Wait ... ``it's bedtime for those of us who live in a civilised timezone'', written at 0150 UTC. Local time in Estonia, which should currently be UTC+0200, should therefore be 0350. I think I was successfully duped into a troll myself.

[12:28:26] <Teckla> Ubuntu MATE is *nice*. I like the desktop/UI way better than vanilla Gnome.
[12:47:05] <FatPhil> I've not tried one of the heavyweight GUIs for possibly well over a decade. They were trying to be too clever back then, I can't imagine they've been reined in since.
[13:01:48] <Bytram> Teckla: I am slowly getting used to Mate. So far so good. HTH if I can, and might want to pick your brain at some point.
[13:20:55] <Bytram> firefox--
[13:20:55] <Bender> karma - firefox: -28
[13:21:42] <Teckla> I tried Xubuntu yesterday, but had a few desktop UI crashes. Recoverable from the console.
[13:22:35] <Bytram> How do I setup firefox (86.0) so that when I open a new page or tab, it opens to a specific URL (say: file://)
[13:22:46] <Bytram> crashes--
[13:22:46] <Bender> karma - crashes: -2
[13:22:53] <Teckla> I've had good luck with vanilla Ubuntu for years, but they adopted some macOS-isms I don't like. And stripped out some features (at least from easy access).
[13:23:45] <Bytram> less on screen to see means less to confuse the user so it MUST be better, right? :(
[13:24:53] <Teckla> For example, I dislike default Alt+Tab behavior on macOS and Gnome 3 -- it switches between applications instead of windows, and then there's a difference key combo to switch between windows of the current application.
[13:25:35] <Teckla> On Gnome 3, you *can* get Alt+Tab to switch windows among all applications instead (I've done it), but you have to find and install an extra tool, and customize your hot keys.
[13:25:35] <Bytram> (Because it's harder to find things, so the users cause fewer problems, which means fewer problem reports to the developer == better? Nope!)
[13:25:51] <Teckla> Similarly, Gnome 3 recently removed the ability to set a solid background color (why?!). Again, fixable... with effort.
[13:26:23] <Teckla> Bytram: Heh!
[13:27:10] <Bytram> why? 'cause everybody has gigs and gigs of memory, so why not waste some on a desktop background

[13:28:33] <Teckla> I also don't like the macOS-like dock Gnome 3 has now... I prefer a traditional "task bar" that shows what's I'm running, not both what I'm running and not running.
[13:29:25] <Teckla> Maybe I'm just old and don't like change :)
[13:29:41] <Bytram> Teckla: Solid color background... create an img file containing a single solid color, save that, use as background (and if possible option, stretch to cover desktop)
[13:30:11] <Bytram> agreed on task bar
[13:32:56] <Bytram> when I click the Home icon in Firefox, it *does* bring up my home page (local file which contains lots of organized links.) But, when I open a new tab or window, I get a blank page. So, I then have to take an extra step (every &^%&** time) to load my home page
[13:33:57] <Bytram> CORRECTION: New *page* loads my home page url, but a new tab gets me a blank page. Progress!
[13:34:55] <Teckla> Bytram: Yep, that's one way to set the background to a solid color! I solved it a different way, by downloading a program that gives your lower level access to Gnome 3's settings.
[13:35:02] <Teckla> And it was buried in there.
[13:36:03] <Bytram> granted, my suggestion is rather INflexible, but in a pinch would get the job done.
[13:36:29] <Bytram> glad it worked for ya!
