[00:49:39] <chromas> thanks mang

[01:23:52] <Bytram> RandomFactor: Yes, there were some similarities. If I am not mistaken, those looked like Commodore PET computers(!). 6202 processor with just a few K of memory. I can't remember for certain, but I think those had 2 KiB. Wait a minute...I think program storage on a PET was cassette. Don't recall seeing *that* in the movie.
[01:25:44] <Bytram> Either way, was a fun movie to watch.
[01:46:34] <RandomFactor> Point of Order - KiB wasn't a thing then :-p
[01:47:07] <RandomFactor> If i remember i first heard of that in the mid-late 90s
[01:49:07] <Bytram> right about when 1 GB hard disks started coming out, IIRC. I remember thinking that it was an amazing deal when one could buy a 1 GB drive for less than $1000
[01:51:18] <Bytram> and then 2 GB drives started coming out. at that point, 2^32 / 10^3 was about 7% more. Enough for some marketers to start trying to take advantage of that in their ads.
[01:53:39] <Bytram> KB and MB and GB were always approximations, and it was understood by us nerds what they *really* meant. Then things got weird. So, to get precise abbreviations, KiB, MiB (Men in Black?), and GiB started to appear.
[01:54:20] <Bytram> Looked really strange at first, and for a while after, but now I am used to it and would prefer to see it used consistently throughout
[01:55:15] <nutherguy> First time I saw a 1 GB hard drive in a computer store, I thought is must be a typo
[01:55:34] <Bytram> NOTE: comm speeds, AFAIK, were always "pure" Mbps (i.e. megabit per second really mean one mission bits per second.)

[01:56:44] <Bytram> First I heard of was a Toshiba (I think) 3 1/2" drive. I kept wondering how they got more storage on smaller platters. (5 1/4 hard disks were king right about that time)
[01:57:27] <Bytram> our servers at work had 150 MB and 300 MB hard disks -- 5 1/4" full height
