[07:04:36] <inz> FatPhil, maybe 4th of July infections are starting to cause symptoms now
[07:06:49] <inz> Daily deaths are also now showing a rising trend
[07:47:21] <FatPhil> a lot of the states have shown a slow and steady increase over the last month or so, I'm not sure Traitors' Day is particularly to blame.
[07:50:34] <FatPhil> I wouldn't expect to see a death bump for that weekend until 3-4 weeks later or so. But it will be quite smooshed out, and possibly invisible.

[08:35:41] <carny> do you have data for expected deaths per day over each day of the year?
[08:36:09] <carny> because it would make a lot more sense to be graphing deltas from baseline instead of absolute deaths
[08:37:19] <carny> we're probably several hundred thousand behind just because of fewer car accidentas and non-essential surgical malpractice
[08:38:25] <FatPhil> indeed, which is one the problems with the excess deaths metri.

[19:21:12] <RandomFactor> Oh yeah, maybe you shouldn't run folding@home at niceness -20?
[19:21:30] <Bytram> on a core 2 duo?
[19:21:48] <RandomFactor> I mean we understand you're trying to help out and all
[19:22:07] <Bytram> with integrated graphics, no less.
[19:22:25] <Bytram> I suspect I could get more done faster with an RPi
[19:23:05] <Bytram> whew! Looks like it's back..
[19:23:12] <Bytram> hold on. biab
[19:23:17] <RandomFactor> I've been meaning to take an old one and plug it into the back of one of the threat researcher's computers and just wait for him to notice it
[19:23:30] <RandomFactor> should be quite entertaining
[19:24:43] <RandomFactor> maybe a leave a txt file log on the card that indicates 'data exfiltrated, self-wipe complete'
[19:25:15] <Bytram> Heh
[19:25:35] <Bytram> Reminds me of when I was taking some training on a product at IBM
[19:25:53] <Bytram> a dozen or so of us in a "lab"
[19:26:10] <Bytram> we each had our our own PS/2 Model 80
[19:26:30] <RandomFactor> Microchannel?
[19:26:34] <Bytram> I happened to show up early
[19:26:37] <Bytram> yep
[19:26:52] <RandomFactor> mmmm, plug and play (with floppy) before plug and play was cool
[19:27:02] <Bytram> I thnk they were ticketd out with 8 MB of RAM!
[19:27:21] <Bytram> I think they were tricked out with 8 MB of RAM!
[19:27:52] <Bytram> anyway, standard IBM boat anchor keyboard
[19:28:04] <Bytram> official IBM serial mouse
[19:28:51] <Bytram> with a long serial cable to reach from computer on the floor up to the monitor and keyboard
[19:30:14] <Bytram> I left each mouse connected to its original PC, but moved the mouse (that you'd grab and move) from computer A to computer B, and the one from B to A.
[19:30:28] <Bytram> Waited for everybody else to show up.
[19:30:53] <Bytram> Class was about to start, and people booted their computers
[19:31:04] <Bytram> (OS/2 Warp, I think)
[19:31:31] <RandomFactor> Now's your chance to run the world!
[19:31:48] <Bytram> Someone would go to move their mouse, and did't see anything happening
[19:31:50] * RandomFactor was Team OS/2
[19:32:21] <Bytram> them suddenly, w/o moving their mouse, they saw the mouse pointer on their screen move.
[19:32:32] <Bytram> and then stop
[19:33:10] <RandomFactor> Hilarity
[19:33:17] <Bytram> it took a good severalminutes for them to figure out what was going on!
[19:33:59] <Bytram> we were 4 days into a 5-day long class and were rather fried, already.
[19:34:27] <Bytram> Does AD/Cycle ring a bell?
[19:34:46] <RandomFactor> Not for me
[19:34:59] <Bytram> you were team OS/2? You mean developing it?
[19:35:28] <RandomFactor> nah, just one of the folks that wandered around showing it off etc. The volunteer group
[19:35:38] <Bytram> Ahhh! Got it!
[19:36:23] <Bytram> Too bad that the price of RAM was so high then.
[19:36:35] <Bytram> wasnt there a shortage or something?
[19:36:42] <RandomFactor> I tried to run it with half the recommended amount
[19:37:12] <RandomFactor> it actually 'worked' but seemed like it was actually stepping through swap instead of actual memory....
[19:37:24] <RandomFactor> just sitting there
[19:37:40] <Bytram> So, OS/2 *could* run on 2 MB, but barely. 4 MB was slow, but tolerable. 8 MB and it was actually rather slick!
[19:38:14] <RandomFactor> and yeah, memory wasn't cheap
[19:38:16] <Bytram> But, Windows ran OK on much less RAM
[19:38:37] <Bytram> So there was a huge effort to get the RAM requirements down on OS/2.
[19:39:06] <Bytram> took about a year or so, but they got it to run acceptably on 2 MB (IIRC)
[19:40:23] <RandomFactor> it's still out there in some incarnation
[19:40:27] <RandomFactor> called something else tho
[19:40:35] <Bytram> but by then, the supply chains had caught up with demand, and OS/2 had a year's worth of bad press for its sluggish performance and being RAM hungry; never seemed to shake that reputation
[19:40:41] <Bytram> nod nod
[19:40:52] <Bytram> I don't recall the name of it, either.
[19:41:51] <Bytram> Hmmm, one word, starts with an "R" ??
[19:42:10] <RandomFactor> eComStation that was it
[19:42:26] <RandomFactor> oh wow, there's something new - ArcaOS?
[19:42:46] <Bytram> yep, on both accounts!
[19:42:50] <Bytram> RandomFactor++

[19:50:54] <Bytram> two shay!
[19:51:15] <RandomFactor> hey, don't small (planet 9?) blackholes eventually.......errr...EXPLODE?
[19:51:22] <Bytram> RandomFactor: s/Tipper/Tyler/
[19:51:44] <Bytram> not to my knowledge
[19:52:19] <Bytram> =g Hawking radiation
[19:52:20] <systemd> https://en.wikipedia.org - Hawking radiation - Wikipedia
[19:52:28] <Bytram> oi!
[19:52:54] * Bytram looks at the time and realizes why he's hungry
[19:53:13] <Bytram> time to get busy in the kitchen.
[19:53:20] <RandomFactor> Yeah " Clearly, in the last stages of a black hole's evaporation they act like very hot bodies emitting lots of radiation and they eventually explode at the very end of their lives. Note that all black holes end their lives in the same way with the same kind of explosion. All their initial mass does
[19:53:20] <RandomFactor> is change how long it takes to evaporate and expl

[19:53:22] <Bytram> afk biab

[20:13:16] <halibut> chromas: You probably already know this, but just in case, you need to explicitly enable compression with curl.
[20:13:42] <halibut> chromas: For the command-line utility, use --compressed.
[20:14:17] <halibut> chromas: If using libcurl, I think it's curl_easy_setopt with CURLOPT_ACCEPT_ENCODING set to "" (see docs for more options).
[20:14:53] <halibut> chromas: When not enabled, I think curl does not request a specific encoding, and ignores any that uses.
[20:15:17] <halibut> ... ``that uses'' -> ``that the server uses''
[20:15:59] <chromas> That seems kinda dumb
[20:16:10] <chromas> Thanks for the infos
[20:16:13] * chromas looks into it
[20:16:36] <chromas> although that would save me from zip bombs
[20:17:29] <halibut> I often felt --compressed should be the default, and --no-compressed should be specified to disable, but I kind of get defaulting to a minimum and requiring enabling each desired feature.
