[18:56:11] <_> are stories being published with proofpoint urls now?
[19:07:35] <chromas> If that's a joke I don't get, then yes. Otherwise...maybe
[19:08:02] <_> check the article urls in the cnet post
[19:09:52] <chromas> Ah
[19:10:04] <chromas> Those are in the cnet article
[19:10:34] <_> someones business security tools have leaked into the public space
[19:10:55] <chromas> Ugh. I clicked the link on a freshly installed browser with no adblock and I think I just got AIDS
[19:11:09] <_> no one asked for my vote but i vote for no proofpoint urls
[19:14:38] <_> oh i see what you mean they are part of the source
[19:18:56] <chromas> Fixing 'em. Thanks for the notice :)
[19:21:44] <boru> That poopoint stuff sounds pretty horrendous.
[19:22:53] <boru> Sounds like one of those ads that scams the eldery with flashing gifs of "Your computer has 327 virus hacker attacks! Call this number in india to install Top Security Software™"
[19:23:47] <_> i think they not trying to do harm, but i'd rather not have them
[19:24:12] <chromas> Nah, it's all legit. They have Whitepapers, Webinars and Datasheets.
[19:24:24] <_> they obscure the destination url and there are likely tracking clicks
[19:27:16] <boru> Reading the company website, yeah, doesn't sound 'legit', unless you just mean a registered company.
[19:38:32] <_> fascinating cnet story, it's hard to believe that sergey brin was happy to build the tools to make everybody's personal info easily available but he could not handle his own information appearing there

[23:11:02] <RandomFactor> Heh, Proofpoint URL isn't even the current version. CNET article has V2 rewrites, Proofpoint released V3 like a year ago. CNET should update their their configuration to use the V3 rewrite format.
[23:14:11] <RandomFactor> I've got python code somewhere to reverse the V2 rewrites floating around somewhere if it becomes annoying enough, but I suspect that's very much a one-off thing.

[23:18:51] <RandomFactor> They're MXs show they run Proofpoint. SOmeone just grabbed a url from an email they were sent and didn't know to clean it
[23:20:44] * Bytram tries to remove tracking URLs of any kind whenever he sees them.
[23:21:10] <Bytram> biab -- need food!
[23:22:50] <RandomFactor> Technically they are tracking urls, but not advertising ones. It's just a URL scanning service. If the URL turns bad (e.g. delayed weaponisation) the service scans and sees that and blocks people going to it.
