[12:07:09] <Bytram> There was a VHS shop near where I lived many years ago. They offhand mentioned they were having some computer problems.
[12:07:14] <Bytram> Oh?
[12:08:29] <Bytram> I asked a few questions and it was quickly apparent it was more of an appliance to them -- they knew little more than how to back it up (yay!) and operate it
[12:08:59] <Bytram> I asked if I could take a look... and they led me out back.
[12:09:32] <Bytram> they had a server that supported 3 other PCs that acted as terminals.
[12:10:19] <Bytram> I don't entirely remember the details, but ISTR that the POST was reporting errors.
[12:10:46] <Bytram> The box was already *several* years old, so it was not surprising.
[12:11:51] <Bytram> Figured out the hard disk was dying, picked up another one, installed it in the box, FDISK, FORMAT, restore backup... and wouldn't boot.
[12:12:36] <Bytram> The original hard disk was ~30MB and I had picked up something more like 80MB
[12:13:11] <Bytram> needed to repartition so each partition was < 32 MB (Yay FAT!)
[12:13:55] <Bytram> (fwiw, I recall that SpinRite played a roll in this somehow)
[12:14:34] <Bytram> anyway, with the new partitions defined, and another format, and restore I was able to get it running
[12:14:58] <Bytram> there were two guys who owned/ran the shop.
[12:15:23] <Bytram> One of 'em was so excited he said I could have free rentals forever!
[12:16:31] <Bytram> I didn't have much time for watching videos, unfortunately, but my roommate was certainly willing to take advantage of the opportunity!
[12:17:46] <Bytram> They'd gotten started when most people did not even own a VCR, so they had offered VCR rentals way back when.
[12:18:06] <Bytram> Still had one or two just in case, but were now primarily just renting tapes.
[12:19:00] <Bytram> They held on for a few more years, but were finally overtaken by technology and eventually folded (right about the same time as Blockbuster)
[12:19:01] <cmn32480> and now long ago out of business

[12:21:30] <Bytram> ~10-15 years ago I decided to move my dad out of the stone age and got him a DVD player.
[12:22:14] <Bytram> he was not technically savvy, so I took care of connecting it to the TV and getting it all set up as my dad watched very closely.
[12:22:33] <Bytram> I skimmed over the instructions.
[12:22:50] <Bytram> Explained all the buttons on the remote.
[12:23:17] <Bytram> rewind, pause, ffwd, captioning, etc
[12:23:28] * cmn32480 notes that Blockbuster has been part of Dish Network since 2011
[12:23:47] <Bytram> he's listening very closely and does not want to miss anything
[12:24:19] <Bytram> "Oh, dad. I almost forgot! There's one more thing that is VERY important."
[12:24:28] <Bytram> "yes?"
[12:25:01] <Bytram> "When you are done watching a DVD, you have to remember to rewind it."
[12:25:20] <cmn32480> lol
[12:26:50] <Bytram> Quizzical look as he tried to remember my saying something about that. And then, after several LONG seconds, he realized he'd been pranked. Not something to be done lightly with my dad! But he was a good sport about it in the end.

[17:45:49] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Surpassing Silicon: Paper-Thin Gallium Oxide Transistor Handles More Than 8,000 Volts - https://sylnt.us - bright-spark
[17:49:12] <AndyTheAbsurd> Man, I've been hearing about gallium-based transistors for 20+ years; but I've never actually heard of any commercial applications of them.
[17:58:09] <tedious> Most of this great new science and technology never goes anywhere but it's fun to read about. :)
[17:59:17] <tedious> I think too much of it gets stuck in patent purgetory and will never actually get used.
[18:00:35] <tedious> I'd like to see a patent reform where any citizen can bring a simple suit against a patent on the grounds that it hasn't been commercialized and isn't benefiting society.
[18:01:04] <Deucalion> boru, I'm just familiarising myself with irssi right now
[18:02:32] <Bytram> tedious: what about lining up funding so they can actually make the doohicky?
[18:05:50] <tedious> We already have that with kickstarter for small projects and the megacorps have enough funding already.
[18:06:53] <tedious> My point is just that so many patents are sitting on the shelves doing nothing that we could probably solve a ton of problems with tech if they were set free.
[18:07:25] <Bytram> I'm not defending the practice, but I am aware that there is much more to getting a product to market and profitable than is immediately apparent
[18:08:13] <Bytram> what about defensive patents?
[18:09:03] <tedious> Sounds like rent seeking.
[18:09:27] <tedious> We only have laws to benefit society.
