[00:03:42] <kyonko> i thought irc and web forums were everything
[00:05:05] <kyonko> i'd sign up for a webforum, use a simple password (it was allowed) and then forget about the e-mail account
[00:05:23] <kyonko> but you know, cern, LHC and mandela effect
[00:06:58] <kyonko> biggest thing I remember was the national security letter received by archive.org
[00:07:20] <kyonko> iirc, it was because they were getting videos uploaded from iraq itself by ISIS (pre 2010 ISIS)
[00:10:37] <kyonko> facebook did release a movie "the social network" onto theaters circa 2010, what the fuck for though

[01:28:10] <Bytram> just set up separate VMs ... or RPis ;)
[01:28:53] <chromas> That's a lot of overhead. I need to be able to juggle hundreds of accounts ;)

[12:48:41] <FatPhil> I've just been chasing a linux/tmux issue that's plagued me since 2018
[12:49:16] <FatPhil> my %ENV was consistently wrong every time I started a session or a window.
[12:49:36] <AzumaHazuki> i should really learn to use tmux or screen sometime...
[12:49:52] <FatPhil> I just moved my home directory to a new partition, and thought it would be a good time for a clean start.
[12:50:04] <FatPhil> but the same fricken ENV issues persisted
[12:50:27] <FatPhil> pulled out strace, everything, couldn't work out where the errors were coming from.
[12:50:56] <FatPhil> finally noticed a server running that was started in 2018 with the wrong environment, and it was feeding that to everything spawned since.
[12:52:05] <FatPhil> AzumaHazuki: it's very handy if you want persistent processes. I'm no snob, I use them both, but prefer the sharing capabilities of tmux.

[13:22:42] <FatPhil> most things I do are on servers, and the client I use to access them is irrelevant. I don't work on local machines at all nowadays. Being able to flip from desktop to phone at an instant is priceless.
[13:23:07] <AzumaHazuki> https://www.howtogeek.com holy shit LOL. it has a terminal too
[13:23:12] <systemd> ^ 03The New Windows Terminal Is Ready; Here’s Why It’s Amazing
[13:23:27] <AzumaHazuki> i mean i'm still not gonna touch it with a stolen ten-foot-pole, but this is hilarious
[13:23:29] <FatPhil> if that's the one with the vid, it made me puke withing seconds.
[13:23:40] <FatPhil> the terminal is *broken* beyond belief.
[13:24:10] <FatPhil> It replaces things like '<=' in your C code with unicode less-than-or-equal signs
[13:24:17] <AzumaHazuki> of course it would be
[13:24:26] <AzumaHazuki> this *is* MS we're talking about. I'm just laughing at this
[13:25:14] <FatPhil> the most funny thing is how they consider the brokenness to be a positive feature.
[13:26:21] <FatPhil> "animated GIF backgrounds" - just what every terminal has ever needed!
[13:26:23] <AzumaHazuki> i have this hypothesis that there is a certain critical mass of money that, like gravity and black holes, creates an inescapable singularity
[13:26:50] <AzumaHazuki> and one a person or company gets that much, they aren't able to interact with humanity or the datum reality any longer
[13:27:22] <FatPhil> Musk is inside his own event horizon too, I'd say.
