[01:31:40] <Deucalion> Copying one external drive's contents to another external drive... that sinking feeling that cp -ar may not have been the right choice.... the cp is still going yet the destination contents have exceeded the size of the source drive.... methinks some hard or symlinks are messing with me in some recurcive

[02:00:03] <AzumaHazuki> that is a very bad idea unless the drives are exactly the same capacity

[03:17:44] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Why are We All Forgetting What Day It Is? - https://sylnt.us - does-anybody-really-know-what-time-it-is?-♪♩♪
[03:18:54] <Deucalion> carny, AzumaHazuki - I should have used rsync. It's still going. ~2TB copied from a 500GB drive thus far. There has to be some linked recursion in there. I'll just let it expire eventually due to drive full then go poking about. Every cloud has a silver lining... it is exercising my destination drive by filling it. YAY :D
[03:19:16] <AzumaHazuki> that's just wear and tear though
[03:20:30] <chromas> is it reading /dev/zero or something?
[03:22:10] <Deucalion> Meh - if writing the entirety of a drive once causes an issue I want to know about it now not later when I have backed up things to it. I have 20 yr old HDDs that still spin up fine. If an HDD shits the bed on one pass that is not wear and tear, it is not fit for purpose.
[03:25:37] <Deucalion> chromas, that is a very good question, I am copying a very old backup drive to another new one. I do not recall what is on the source as it is just ancient cruft. There may well be something in a subfolder that symlinks /dev/urandom or somesuch and I am just backing up noise :D So be it.
[03:33:42] <chromas> You can cancel and do an rsync. It should skip over the stuff that's already there
[03:36:37] <chromas> throw a nice --progress on it to spam your terminal with all the filenames

[13:29:45] <Ingar> Gentoo.. when Klingon Painsticks just don't cut it
[13:30:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> naw, easy peasy no systemdsy
[13:30:38] <Ingar> Klingon Painsticks _are_ easy, doesnt mean I'd want to use them :p
[13:31:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> true
[13:31:16] <Ingar> (sry may grudge against gentoo is far larger then my objections against debian ;)
[13:31:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> having one box that builds binary packages for ALL the boxes on a network makes it fairly painless though
[13:31:52] <boru> Pft, Linux. Let me throw my oar in and scoff from an ivory tower.
[13:32:20] <Ingar> do I sense a BSD user?
[13:32:26] * TheMightyBuzzard reports boru to the elephant poaching authorities
[13:32:33] <boru> How did you guess?
[13:32:52] <boru> Those elephants were all dead when I got here.
[13:33:18] <boru> They appear to have run into large pieces of undetermined metal at high velocity.
[13:33:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> common thing among elephants, i hear
[13:33:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> 165/281
[13:34:09] <boru> I have also been lead (har har) to believe that is the case.
[13:34:16] * TheMightyBuzzard really should update the gentoo boxes monthly
[13:43:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, fun. gcc's one of the packages that needs updated. that shouldn't take long at all.
[13:44:00] <boru> Could be worse, could be llvm.
[13:45:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> true
[13:45:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> or webkit-gtk
[13:45:42] <boru> Ugh, yeah.
[13:47:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> doing all this today so i can have an up to date set of binary packages for a beryllium (the box that runs all our external services except the website) replacement
[13:48:20] <TheMightyBuzzard> it's our one and only centos box. version 0.1 or some such ancientness.
[13:50:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> that itself wouldn't bother me overly much but it's become an annoyance since it's never going to get the libs necessary if we want to be able to update things like the irc or mail daemons.

[14:05:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> bah, i ain't choctaw or navajo
[14:07:01] <boru> I wasn't actually aware that the Native Americans sent us aid during the last famine. I learned something new today.
[14:07:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> i've helped the irish plenty through good ole capitalism though. there's some mighty fine firewater comes from there. and jameson too.
[14:07:39] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Malaria 'Completely Stopped' by Microbe - https://sylnt.us - other-pandemic
[14:07:50] <boru> Things must be rough out there if Jameson is considered might fine. I'll sponsor an aid package to you immediately.
[14:08:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> i did note it separately from the fine firewater.
[14:08:36] <boru> Technically correct.
[14:09:03] <boru> Nonetheless, I'll happily increase my SN sub to fund you with something decent to drink.
[14:09:10] * TheMightyBuzzard chuckles
[14:09:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> if i were gonna drink blended, i'd go with slane or some such. way better than jameson if you absolutely must drink blended.
[14:10:26] <boru> For a cheap blend, you're probably a small step better with a bottle of Bushmills (Black Bush, for example).
[14:10:47] <boru> For generally cheap swill or cleaning your toilet, I'd recommend Scotch.
[14:11:22] <boru> But really, I'll have to supply you with a decent single pot still. Redbreast 12 is my conversion whiskey.
[14:14:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> had a bottle of single malt that i really dug but it disappeared somehow and i can't remember the name
