[08:27:41] <FatPhil> pci express is a powered bus

[08:28:45] * chromas doesn't know

[08:29:44] <chromas> Found it in a Vista-era HP pc
[08:29:54] <janrinok> sounds about right
[08:30:07] <chromas> I didn't know modems were still being made then
[08:32:11] <chromas> Maybe there will be a "retro internet" boom where people with old modem collections will start up ISPs and it'll be hip and cool like plastic records and EGA desktops
[08:32:52] * chromas wonders how well dial-up would work over crappy cell phone compression
[08:33:01] <carny> You found a 96 kbps pci express modem! Your current modem is only 9600/4800 bps V.32, so it seems Luck is with you!
[08:33:03] <janrinok> I've got 2 (well, actually I've got more than that...) that I experiment with. Had them working at 48k but the bummer is the power requirements at both ends. I was using them to exchange data with a arduino that is in a remote location, but in the end decided to go with PoE and just pay for the extra hardware.
[08:33:59] <chromas> 96k sounds like a lot for a modem
[08:34:40] <chromas> Whenever my modem got up to 28.8 it seemed to run slower than the usual 14.4 or so

[08:36:43] <chromas> I got a Xenix terminal once while messing with the dial-up settings but I didn't know what it was then :'(
[08:40:14] <chromas> janrinok: No cloud? Strap-on an old Android phone and let Google do the work :)
[08:40:41] <chromas> Plus it vibrates!
[08:47:50] <janrinok> I don't have an old android phone, and the one I do have requires charging every few days. I'm not climbing a mast to charge a phone. The arduino is happily running on solar power, but I couldn't power the modem the same way. PoE solved the problem.
[08:49:21] <janrinok> The solar power is now purely for backup.
[08:50:46] <janrinok> I might change to a Pycom device (https://docs.pycom.io/products/) if I can find one with a low enough power requirement for my minimum data transfer speed.

Popped into the edge-of-town market, and the first 4 punters I saw all had face masks on. Different sectors of society are clearly viewing this through different lenses.
[11:40:38] <FatPhil> Even with our relaxed precautions, we're doing pretty well, so I think a lot of people are dropping their guard.
