[13:24:38] <GrandFireWizard> If Paypal is used.. does Paypal send the person's address and other details to the retailer? If so, what's the point of using Paypal?
[13:25:42] <TheMightyBuzzard> GrandFireWizard, lemme look what all they send us
[13:26:59] <GrandFireWizard> Ohhh that's useful
[13:30:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> first name, last name, and email address. no idea if the name has to actually be true. i assume not on prepaid cards at least.
[13:30:51] <GrandFireWizard> Useful to know. Thanks for looking it up :)
[13:32:17] <janrinok> GrandFireWizard, I wasn't aware of even that scant amount of data being sent - but only a very few people here ever see such data. As a lowly editor I don't see anything other than stories.
[13:32:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> also the stuff we already know so we know who to credit it to of course.
[13:33:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, requires admin access. as in machines admins not web admins.
[13:34:20] <GrandFireWizard> just had an online purchase bounce due to 'address validation error or information mismatch' which is really strange.. as the whole point of using Palpal is to pay securely. So, I'm hunting around for information.
[13:35:13] <janrinok> that could cover a multitude of things but isn't a very helpful 'error' message
[13:36:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> could be either ip address or email address not matching
[13:37:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> tor could easily cause the first and just using a different email address for paypal than the site could cause the latter
[13:37:21] <GrandFireWizard> I already know about the interesting things banks do with online payments. They had levels of security and levels of data demanded to 'verify' a transaction. At the lowest levels the vendor sends the credit card info and validates the payment. At a higher level the vendor demands - note: demands - to be given the person's credit details like billing address, person's name, and other information. Your bank won't usually admit how this process
[13:37:21] <GrandFireWizard> works - security by obscurity, but it's possible to find out why transactions fail.
[13:37:41] <GrandFireWizard> Good question. Am looking into it.
[13:38:21] <GrandFireWizard> Some time ago they started cracking down on any credit card transactions where the deliver address doesn't match the billing address, or where the name doesn't match exactly.
[13:39:23] <SemperOSS> GrandFireWizard: I think that PayPal checks the address information when people are ordering physical products that are sent. I have seen many places that the shipping address must match the registered PayP{al address.
[13:39:58] <GrandFireWizard> SemperOSS: Interesting
[13:44:02] <GrandFireWizard> This address is registered with Paypal. I just found it interesting it was rejected on what looks like an address mismatch when the vendor only has a shipping address to deliver the goods to... it's.. strange...
[13:45:21] <SemperOSS> The ways of PayPal are strange
[13:50:11] <GrandFireWizard> May Stripe overcome to conquer all in the Clash of the Payment Providers

[14:12:41] <GrandFireWizard> here I thought science was pretty much the opposite of religion
[14:13:13] <GrandFireWizard> or, does science have an invisible man in the sky that watches us all always with infinite power who just never deigns to interfere that I'm not aware of?
[14:13:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> s'what you get for thinking

[14:14:17] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean those are supposed to be code for "fuck if we know but it looks like..."
[14:14:47] <AzumaHazuki> Bot's schtick is a very common one among apologists. And, again, it boils down to "you suck as much as me." He's really making a philosophical argument, not a scientific one
[14:14:59] <AzumaHazuki> he probbaly jizzed in his pants a little when he got to type the word "scientism"
[14:15:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> bot ain't wrong on the violence thing. it absolutely solves problems. is it palatable is the question.

[14:30:47] <FatPhil> I had andouillettes in Nice, and they are notorious for occasionally being a bit stinky...
[14:30:59] <AzumaHazuki> Paul is definitely just being a dick
[14:31:26] <AzumaHazuki> he tells the people who spent 3 years personally with Jesus that he, Paul, is an "apostle among/above apostles" despite never having met Jesus in person once
[14:31:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> i quite often would agree, even when he ain't gone off-message. he had politeness issues at the very least.
[14:31:58] <FatPhil> I suspect more atheists have studied the bible to a pedantic level than christains have.
[14:32:36] <AzumaHazuki> I'm...well, there's no good word for me. Deist, panentheist, spiritist, whatever. Not an atheist. But yes, we nonbelievers have studied the source very well, which is why we reject it
[14:32:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah. atheists en masse are relatively new. still plenty of generations alive that religion was the norm.

[14:36:12] <AzumaHazuki> most of the bible is very well-preserved actually, considering how many languages it's gone through
[14:37:00] <AzumaHazuki> the major issue is how Sheol, Gehenna, and "the grave" keep getting translated as "hell" and how the Koine "aion[io(s/n)]" were translated "aeternam" into Latin

[14:37:37] * soybull looks around for a cow to mount
[14:38:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> wheaton, for all his hypocrisy on the matter, gave a very good summation of what it was supposed to be in "don't be a dick"
[14:38:55] <soybull> Wheaton? I thought that was a town next to Sharon, in Pennsylvania
[14:39:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> he just didn't look far enough to add "don't be nice at the expense of harming the person you're being nice to"
[14:39:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> the whole give a man a fish paradox
[14:40:23] <AzumaHazuki> that pat little aphorism presupposes: 1) the second man has a fishing rod, 2) also hs a boat, 3) has the means to cook the fish, 4) is allowed to fish
[14:40:29] <AzumaHazuki> i know where you're going with this
[14:40:37] <soybull> Wheaton the abolitionist?
[14:41:12] * FatPhil hands soybull a will
[14:41:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> they didn't have a bass pro back at the time, so a fishing rod was string and a stick.
[14:41:32] <TheMightyBuzzard> wasn't going anywhere beyond there with it though
[14:41:41] <FatPhil> but now they have bass pros, they just SLAPP for fish?
[14:42:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> plenty of ways to harm someone through being shortsightedly nice. pick whichever you feel like thinking of.
[14:42:40] * TheMightyBuzzard shurgs
[14:43:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> i tell ya though, if this does hit proper apocalypse levels, i'm fishing the big tank at bass pro before i die.
[14:44:18] <TheMightyBuzzard> what most folks do wrong is treating the whole fish thing as boolean
[14:44:20] <FatPhil> So what you're saying is "make a man a fishing rod, only he will fish. teach a man to make a fishing rod, and he'll have a successful fishing rod business"?
[14:44:49] <AzumaHazuki> no, what I'm saying is "Uzzard's using some thought-terminating cliche as a veiled argument against universal healthcare"
[14:45:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> FatPhil, + "and then you can buy them from him instead of making them yourself"
[14:45:53] <TheMightyBuzzard> AzumaHazuki, nah. teaching a man to doctor isn't really viable.
[14:46:34] <AzumaHazuki> you get backed into a corner, and your Madness Mantra starts leaking: "I will not sacrifice my liberty for anyone else's comfort." Which is both a strawman and a non-sequitur
[14:47:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> you mean like the strawman you're doing right now? i gave a general statement that is both eminently true and inarguable. nothing more.
[14:48:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> i'm not particularly in the mood to argue, so any mental judo you read into it simply ain't there.
[14:48:31] <AzumaHazuki> you have a history of this stuff, and you just don't like that it's getting brought up now
[14:49:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, you know better than that. i'm not one to shrink from a fight. i just ain't in the mood this morning.
[14:49:32] <AzumaHazuki> let me guess..."this has never happened to you before?" :)
[14:49:37] <soybull> shrinking violet?
[14:49:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> on the contrary. it happens all the time. i just got things i'd rather do right now.
[14:50:02] <soybull> violet ain't your color, man
[14:50:55] <soybull> and I ain't figured out which Wheaton you were referring to
[14:50:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> soybull, man, me and fashion have the same relationship as me and other people's opinions on anything else.
[14:51:02] <soybull> probably not Wil Wheaton

[19:55:03] <FatPhil> AzumaHazuki: quick druuuuuugs question, if I may (others may chip in). Does the average person think that Tylenol is somehow special, or do they know that there are a range of mostly equivalent other brands with the same APAP in? (I'm trying to work out if a headline "Stores run out of Tylenol" should be interpreted as "Stores run out of APAP".)
[19:58:09] <gozar> The average person doesn't know.
[20:02:33] <FatPhil> Ta. In the UK, our most popular 'brand' is basically the generic 'paracetamol'. Only posh twats pay for 'Panadol'.
[20:03:09] <FatPhil> oh - doesn't know they're different, or doesn't know they're the same?
[20:03:58] <FatPhil> In a very brand-oriented society, the default not knowing position would be to consider different brand = different product, I'd guess.
[20:05:14] <FatPhil> Then again, I'd guess it's the pharmacists job to guide them towards alternatives, so the rest should sell out pretty soon after the known brands.

[20:16:06] <systemd> https://en.wikipedia.org(brand) - Tylenol (brand) - Wikipedia
[20:16:49] <Bytram> ===> Tylenol /ˈtaɪlənɒl/ is a brand of drugs advertised for reducing pain, reducing fever, and relieving the symptoms of allergies, cold, cough, headache, and influenza. The active ingredient of its original flagship product is paracetamol (known in the United States as acetaminophen), an analgesic and antipyretic. Like the words paracetamol and acetaminophen, the brand name Tylenol is derived from a chemical name for the compou
[20:16:49] <Bytram> nd, N-aceTYL-para-aminophENOL (APAP).[1] The brand name is owned by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.[2]
[20:16:49] <Bytram> As of 2020, the "Tylenol" brand was used in Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Myanmar, Netherlands, Oman, Paraguay, the Philippines, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Vietnam.[3]
[20:20:14] <FatPhil> Yeah - but do you go to the pharmacist looking for acetaminophen, or Tylenol? And are you happy to walk out of the store with the other if need be? (But SN IRC-ers aren't a random sample of the population, it's what the masses think I'm wondering about)
