[07:47:53] <chromas> Needs moar letterboxing
[07:56:41] <FatPhil> Got a very worrying email yesterday. As our brewpub relies so heavily on export sales, we're basically fucked. The only market that's still functional are local supermarkets, and that's a tiny fraction of sales. We can't even pay interest on loans with that, let alone nightwatchmen wages.
[07:57:24] <chromas> Start selling on the internet
[07:57:28] <chromas> SoylentBrews
[07:58:21] <FatPhil> They've started that around the Tallinn area, delivery or collect, but it's still a small market.
[07:58:28] <inz> FatPhil, that sounds like a challenge: "can you drink enough to keep us afloat"
[07:59:26] <FatPhil> Alas almost all the bars are closed :(
[07:59:27] <chromas> "Every keg comes with a complementary roll of TP"
[08:00:13] <FatPhil> We're not bumhole loons, we haven't emptied the shelves of that kind of stuff.
[08:00:45] <chromas> Buy it all up to create demand, then push your supply
[08:01:46] <FatPhil> The producers do still want to sell, and the distributors still want to distribute, everything from a necessities viewpoint is functionallying normally. We've only got 2 weeks' food here. We'll probably pick up another week's worth of stuff today.
[08:02:05] <FatPhil> We normally have twice as many humans in town, there's a surfeit!
[08:02:46] <FatPhil> A leaflet with special offers popped through the letterbox only yesterday.
[08:04:33] <FatPhil> Jesus christ, what's happened to the markets? my 10-second update ticker is down to a change every 10 minutes or so.
[08:06:36] * chromas dumps his shares in ticker tech

[17:20:19] <SoyCow8947> Anyone else having DNS issues getting to soylentnews.org domains?
[17:20:39] <SoyCow8947> Firefox says it "cannot connect to server" until I `dig soylentnews.org -t all`, and then it works fine
[17:21:44] <Bytram> SoyCow8947: I have occasionally run into a similar problem with Pale Moon... what happens if you try: wget https://soylentnews.org
[17:21:45] <systemd> ^ 03SoylentNews: SoylentNews is people
[17:22:16] <Bytram> I just refreshed the main page without issue
[17:22:37] <SoyCow8947> "Resolving soylentnews.org (soylentnews.org)... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution."
[17:22:51] <SoyCow8947> that's wget
[17:24:38] <SoyCow8947> hmm, ftr I did it without the https://, but that shouldn't matter for dns
[17:25:18] <SoyCow8947> then I tried in firefox - it worked, and then the same wget command again - it worked :/
[17:35:31] <Bytram> I imagine there may have been some issues with the internet routing tables as providers try to deal with so many more people online trying to work from home?
[17:52:57] <SoyCow8947> I dunno, I only see this happening with soylentnews, no other site I visit.
[17:53:32] <SoyCow8947> IIRC it did start happening some time last week though, so the timing kinda checks out
[17:56:57] * Bytram wonders what kind of connectivity you have... Urban/Rural Fiber-to-the-Home, DSL, how those are all routed... and more importantly, how heavily loaded up-stream connection are, can make a difference. Heck, even running your own DNS service rather than your ISPs or OprnDNS, Cloudfare, etc. can also be a factor.
[17:57:09] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - European Commission to Use Open Source Messaging Service Signal - https://sylnt.us - sending-a-signal-to-use-signal
[17:59:13] <Bytram> As for *our* end of the connection, we have available way way way way more bandwidth than we need. Site is almost all text, it spread over several servers, and Linode's hosting plans are geared to the more common site layout that is image and video heavy.
[17:59:43] <Bytram> So, what they offer is far and away much much more than what we need.

[18:05:55] <SoyCow8947> Bytram: it's not a bandwidth issue though, it seems to be a DNS issue of some sort.
[18:06:34] <SoyCow8947> I'm using 1.1.1.1 (cloudflare?) for my primary DNS server, so I'd expect that to just work, or have the same thing affect other people
[18:07:14] <SoyCow8947> if it doesn't affect anyone else, then maybe it's some strangeness in my local DNS cache/resolver. Which only affects soylentnews and subdomains thereof. :/
[18:08:58] <Bytram> your diagnosis makes sense.
[18:09:08] <janrinok> No problems here in Europe
[18:09:21] <janrinok> ... well no internet problems, that is
[18:09:43] <Bytram> could easily be a mal-formed BGP entry that temporarily messed up routing and made the route from you to use go ... the long way home

[23:50:49] <Bytram> It's rare I actually have a couple hours of unplanned time, but finally made time to watch "The Hunger Games" on DVD which I'd picked up a while ago. Pretty good, all-in-all, once I got past almost immediately deconstructing the whole story premise.
[23:52:13] <Leebert> Haven't read the book, so I'm prohibited from watching the movie. I made that a rule back in the 90's when I read Jurassic Park after I saw the movie.
[23:52:40] <Bytram> Yep, have 3 gallons of hearty, home-made ham stew and nearly a gallon of home-made split-pea soup. Plus plenty of pasta, rice, canned soups, beans, etc. Prolly good for the better part of a month of TP, too. =)
